Ace Young made his Broadway debut in GREASEâ„ ¢ in the role of ‘Kenickie’ last fall. An ‘American Idol’ finalist in Season 5 and a Grammy nominated songwriter, Ace has guest-starred on Fox’s ‘Bones,’ co-hosted ‘American Idol Extra’ and co-produced his debut album, Ace Young.
Susan Boyle’s debut album tops Britain’s charts
LONDON ‘†In the contest, she finished second. But on the charts, she’s number one.
Susan Boyle’s debut record, “I Dreamed A Dream,” entered the British album chart in the top spot Sunday. The 48-year-old Scottish songstress famously finished second on “Britain’s Got Talent,” but the variety show launched a career that has seen her win success on both sides of the Atlantic.
According to the Official Charts Company, which tracks music sales in Britain, the more than 410,000 copies of “I Dreamed a Dream” sold since its release Nov. 23 make it the fastest selling album so far this year, and are the largest first-week sales for a debut album in U.K. chart history.
Cowell to take ‘X Factor’ to Vegas
When Simon Cowell’s “Amer ican Idol” rival show “X Factor” comes to the US, expect the rallying cry to be “You’re going to . . . Las Vegas.”
Cowell, who is still in talks with Fox and NBC about bringing the talent show to American TV, said over the weekend that his plans are to set up shop in Las Vegas when the deal is finally done.
“Vegas is tailor-made for this show,” says Sir Philip Green, the retail store-billionaire who is now partners with Cowell.
“To sing in Vegas? I mean, hell, you get to the final 12 [and tell them] ‘Your dream’s come true — you’re going to sing in Vegas!’ ”
More Idol Headlines after the JUMP…
MUSIC AT MOHEGAN:
Head to the casino tonight for a pair of free concerts. First up is Sam and Ruby in the Wolf Den. The duo of accomplished artists/songwriters have been performing together for nearly a decade. Their song “Heaven’s My Home,” (performed by The Duhks) was nominated for a Grammy in 2007. Their show is at 8 p.m. or you can go see some American Idol alumni at the Shops at Mohegan Sun. American Stars in Concert for the Holidays features former contestants Alexis Grace, Gina Glocksen, David Hernandez and Michael Sarver. The group will perform a host of their favorite holiday renditions at 7:30 p.m.
American Idol airplay: Kelly Clarkson’s tops
This week, Kelly Clarkson’s Already Gone retains the top spot on the Hot AC chart, according to Mediabase. The single is also a top-five hit on the Top 40 side, as it tops 15,000 overall weekly spins. Kelly four tracks in the top 20 of this week’s American Idol airplay chart, as My Grown Up Christmas List reaches its highest spot of the season.
Below the top 20, Christmas airplay has the Idol chart in an upheaval. The chart has 22 holiday entries, and Hot AC stations switching over to a Christmas format for the season means decreased airplay for several older tracks.
Allison Iraheta aims to excite with debut album
LOS ANGELES — Allison Iraheta has come a long way since her awkward first interview with Ryan Seacrest.
The spunky 17-year-old singer, who stuttered and stammered when the “American Idol” host prodded her about school at the beginning of the eighth season, went on to win rave reviews from the judges throughout the competition, standing out early on with a rendition of Heart’s “Alone” and leaving a lasting impression with her take on Janis Joplin’s “Cry Baby.”
It wasn’t enough to win; Iraheta placed fourth behind Kris Allen, Adam Lambert and Danny Gokey on the Fox network show. Yet she still snagged a record deal with “Idol” label 19 Recordings and Jive Records. Her album, “Just Like You,” will be in stores Tuesday. The redhead – who’s added purple and pink streaks to her memorable coif – says her pop-rock collection accents her innate edginess.
Brown won’t sing
ABC had a change of heart over the weekend and will not let R&B singer Chris Brown sing next week on “Good Morning America.”
Instead, Brown has agreed to “come clean” in a primetime interview about what happened the night he beat up former girlfriend Rhianna, according to reports,
The network was bitterly criticized last week after it canceled a performance by flamboyant “Idol” star Adam Lambert on “GMA” — following his raunchy performance on the American Music Awards show — then announced plans for Brown to promote his latest CD with a live show on the program.
Adam Lambert Had An Identity Crisis Before Recording For Your Entertainment
While Adam Lambert certainly seems to have a strong sense of who he is and who he wants to be (as evidenced by his controversial performance on the American Music Awards last week), the “American Idol” runner-up admits that when he first sat down to start work on his debut album, For Your Entertainment, he wasn’t sure what he should sound like.
GaGa Over Lambert
Lambert’s AMA vocal performance was a strained delivery by a very versatile singer. No doubt he was anticipating every carefully over-choreographed move, including that unerotic man-smooch with a keyboardist and the perfunctory onstage reunion of Adam’s face and another guy’s crotch. As a cheerleader for same-sex whoopee, I wish the whole thing had been’ ¦ well, hotter.
But in the ensuing bullshit with ‘ Good Morning America’ ‘†a show that much prefers convicted girlfriend beaters over guy snoggers ‘“ Lambert wowed me with his lovely rendition of a ditty that’s not heard nearly enough in the public square. It’s called ‘Fuck You, I’m Not Going to Apologize For Something I Don’t Regret.’ (My colleague, Jeff Prince, wants to hear more of that tune, too). For once, that kind of honesty seemed to have a tangible result ‘“ the smelling-salts addicted Parents Television Council shockingly backtracked a bit and said GMA ‘overreacted’ with their cancellation. I don’t recall ever hearing self-appointed guardians of media morality implying that censorship is a bad thing. Maybe the Parents are growing up.
How to Make Sex Boring
Most Americans have never heard of Adam Lambert, much to the disappointment of the singer’s publicists. Earlier this year, he finished as runner-up on American Idol, the TV talent show that has, after eight seasons, long since lost the novelty it had in 2002 when Kelly Clarkson won top honors in the program’s series debut.
In an evident effort to rescue himself from obscurity, Lambert decided last week to turn ABC’s American Music Awards broadcast into a political publicity stunt. While performing the title track from his new album’ ¦well, here’s how MTV.com described it:
UPDATED!! Adam Lambert in New York ‘“ DIRRTTYY vid by TMZ & TMZ guys discussing censoring Adam
I think we all know TMZ by now, this video sticks to their ‘NEWS’ formula’ ¦
I decided to include it at the site as I believe we all need to know all the good and bad vibes that are going on around Adam’ ¦
‘Romance’ with fame
Her music, even more than her fashion sense, makes it clear she’s calling her own shots. You can hear her brash personality on ‘The Fame,’ her year-old debut (re-released last week with an added 8-song EP as ‘The Fame Monster’ ). It comes off as one woman’s vision, not a piece of pop product produced by consensus.
In this way, ‘The Fame’ is the opposite of Adam Lambert’s new ‘For Your Entertainment,’ a made-by-committee mess which employs Pink, Rivers Cuomo, Kara DioGuardi – and Gaga – along with 23 additional producers and writers. If Lambert is going to be a star, he needs to go Gaga by dumping his handlers and insisting on artistic autonomy, as he he did at last week’s American Music Awards when he kissed his male keyboardist and stuffed a male dancer’s face in his crotch. To survive, he’s got to let his sizable ego and, if he’s lucky, sizable acumen take control.
‘Idol’ winner Kris Allen mistaken for Adam Lambert, who proves he’s got loyal fans
Adam Lambert has some loyal fans – even if they don’t always recognize him.
During an Entertainment Weekly interview series at Hudson Terrace last week, Kris Allen, who won season eight of “American Idol,” was confused for the controversial runnerup. An audience member jumped up and yelled, “Adam, you were robbed!”
A startled Allen paused before continuing the interview, and the overzealous fan was informed Adam would be making an appearance next month.
Kris Allen Stumbles With Debut Album Sales
Kris Allen may be an ‘American Idol’ winner, but fans didn’t vote him to No. 1. this week, according to Billboard.
The Season 8 victor’s debut album sold a disappointing 80,000 in its first week, the weakest debut of any ‘Idol’ winner, landing it at No. 11.
In fact, another ‘Idol’ winner, Carrie Underwood, outsold him with sales of her third album, ‘Play On.’ The album sold 86,000 copies, pushing it past the half-million mark overall. It was released on November 3.
Oh Joy! Megan Joy Releases Debut Single
Megan Joy kind of lost her way on American Idol, but she gave one of my favorite auditions of last season, one that made a lasting impression on me. So regardless of what transpired after that, I always steadfastly insisted that if she were paired with the right material and right producer to bring out the smoky, Feist-y, feline qualities of her jazzy, fron-another-era voice, Megan Joy could be a serious artist.
Carrie Underwood “Plays On”
After winning “American Idol”, Season Four, songstress Carrie Underwood went on to win four Grammys, be named 2009 Academy of Country Music Entertainer of the Year and be crowned the CMA and ACM Female Vocalist of the Year. Carrie’s new album “Play On” was released on November 3rd. Her music appeals across the board to teens hot for Country and great pop ballads as well. The music star also has a Holiday TV Special coming up on Dec. 7th on Fox.
We wanted to catch up with Carrie on her music, her holiday traditions, her superstar musical artist pals and her advice for “Idol” contestants trying to follow in her successful footsteps. Check it out…..
Carrie Underwood: I’m More Than Just Blonde Hair and a Pretty Dress
Carrie Underwood definitely didn’t let us down when she put on quite a sassy, sexy performance of ‘Casanova Cowboy’ at the American Music Awards on Sunday (and showed off her lush legs in a short get-up) — but the country crooner insisted that there is much more to her than what meets the surface.
‘I get to sing from the heart and I don’t feel like I’ve ever really done that before. Its therapeutic , not in a way like ‘me and my best friend had a fight and I write about it.’ Its therapeutic in a way that I’m a private person and one thing people say constantly about me is she doesn’t say much,’ Underwood told us.
Review: Kelly Clarkson sings out loud, sings out strong at Reno Events Center
Clarkson came on at 9:15 and sang ‘“ nearly nonstop’“ for an hour before returning to the stage for four strong encores. She was dressed in black jeans and a multi-colored, short-sleeved top for most of the show. She changed into a pink, black and silver sparkly shirt and pulled her hair back into a pony tail for the last two songs. And her two back up singers didn’t go the flashy route either.
Clarkson performed nearly all her hits: ‘Miss Independent,’ ‘Breakaway,’ ‘Gone,’ ‘Walk Away,’ ‘Since U Been Gone,’ ‘Behind these Hazel Eyes’ and ‘My Life Would Suck Without You.’ Because the decibel level was high to the point of distortion on some of her rock songs, the ballads — most notably ‘Because of You’ — were a little easier on these tender ear drums.
Archuleta’s typical work day
It certainly varies, and I doubt that David Archuleta is outside now checking out the changing colors on the grapevines around Sonoma County before his concert tonight, but’ ¦.
Idol Chatter did ask Archuleta what a normal concert day was for him.
Here is his response:
‘I usually do interviews in the morning and then check out the place where we are going to perform. But that depends on how long it is to drive from the other (previous) city. (He was in Bakersfield Saturday night).
Archuleta’s mission
David Archuleta is Mormon by faith. And at some point Mormons go on a mission to spread that faith.
So, will Archuleta, who turns 19 next month, ever do that?
Here is his explanation:
‘A Mission? You know, I wasn’t kind of expecting this to happen. I was 16 and it (his music career) started early in a way.
An Archuleta concert is all about ‘the voice’
Concerts have a certain sameness to them ‘“ merchandise table, slightly late start, opening act you wish would hurry up, grand entrance of the main act. You know the routine.
Then comes the star of the show and one of two things occur after the obligatory 90 minute performance ‘“ you soon forget the act on the way home or you don’t.
Katharine McPhee Makes It A Nutcracker Night
Katharine McPhee heads home to her home on the west coast after a flight from New York City on Saturday (November 28).
The 25-year-old Idol alum waited patiently for her bags with her husband Nick Cokas and let her dogs Larry and Nena stretch their legs after the cross-country flight.
Lloyd Daniels’ X Factor dream ends as he is voted off
Teenager Lloyd Daniels failed to reach the X Factor’s semi-final after the public voted him off the ITV1 show.
The 16-year-old, from Treharris, south Wales, was described as “karaoke” by judge Louis Walsh but mentor Cheryl Cole said he had a bright future.
Daniels, who had performed Take That’s A Million Love Songs and the Elton John classic I’m Still Standing, said: “I have enjoyed every moment.”
Olly Murs, Danyl Johnson, Joe McElderry and Stacey Solomon made the final four.
X Factor bully Danyl Johnson told to leave Stacey Solomon alone
Danyl Johnson has been given a dressing down for bullying Stacey Solomon.
Her dad David, 54, stepped in after hearing drama teacher Danyl had left 20-year-old Stacey in tears with jokes about her sex life and poking fun at her single-mum status.
He had a quiet word with Danyl’s mum Maria Burgess, asking her to tell her son to reign in his behaviour.
Maria then spoke to Danyl and ordered him to stop picking on Stacey.
Why Simon Cowell’s Americanized ‘X Factor’ Will Fail
Why Simon Cowell’s Americanized ‘X Factor’ Will Fail If you have been blithely buried beneath some rubble, you probably don’t know what X Factor is. I’m sorry. I can’t help atone for any consequent guilt you’re feeling for not knowing about One Of The Most Amazing Spectacles This Increasingly Yellowing Earth Has Ever Experienced…Ever. I can, however, provide a shortcut for you to catch up, by way of some back-alley blather that’s transpiring about Fox’s stab at Americanizing the British talent show. A mogul whose retinas are tattooed with dollar signs, Simon Cowell is the one who basically made another Simon (the one who cobbled the Spice Girls together in 1994) irrelevant. He did this by ripping off the formula for the latter’s worldwide Idol franchise and tweaking it enough to avoid litigation, consequently expelling X Factor through his creative coochie snorcher.
Simon Cowell wants Joe McElderry to win the X Factor, according to reports.
At the end of last night’s show – which saw Lloyd Daniels voted off by the public – it was claimed the other judges are being persuaded to give Joe, 18, extra support.
And Cowell told ITV2 spin-off The Xtra Factor he was adamant Cheryl Cole’s remaining act was on his way to secure the winner’s title after making it through to next week’s semi finals.
‘The person we’ve all got to beat right now is Joe,’ he said.
However, Cowell’s decision has allegedly angered his own acts – Olly Murs, 25, and Danyl Johnson, 27.
Carrie Ann Inaba: Dancing Just Five Days After Neck Surgery!
Watch out! Carrie Ann Inaba is back on the dance floor.
The 41-year-old Dancing With the Stars judge may have had surgery on her neck Wednesday, but she tells me she’s already good to go. She went under the knife to treat pressure caused by spinal stenosis, a painful condition in which the space around the spinal cord narrows…
Dizzy Feet was started earlier this year by Inaba, Nigel Lythgoe, Adam Shankman and Katie Holmes to promote dance education for young people.
Also at the event were Channing Tatum, Lance Bass, Jane Kaczmarek, Glee’s Matthew Morrison and stars from So You Think You Can Dance, Dancing With the Stars, the American Ballet Theatre and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.
Lea Michele Looks Forward to Singing Streisand, Madonna on ‘Glee’
Glee’ star Lea Michele sang in an intimate cabaret show that supported Cyndi Lauper’s organization, ‘True Colors’ and ‘Broadway Impacts,’ a group that pushes for gay marriage. The impossibly adorable and sincere singer spoke with PopEater about the event and what’s next for her ‘Glee’ character.
Why did you do this event?
The minute I got asked to do it I jumped on the opportunity because even though I get to sing on ‘Glee’ a lot it’s not as much as if I was doing 8 shows a week on Broadway. I think it’s a fantastic organization and I’m a huge fan of Cyndi Lauper’s.

How can that make anybody feel bad? It’s not like Kris or Adam are going to share their money with any of us (well, maybe if we become charity cases due to our blog addictions. Wandering the streets aimlessly and going up to strangers begging to use their iPhones ‘Please, man, I just need a hit! Just one post! I promise.’ Then they might donate to a charity who might help us and then they are kind of sharing with us).
LOL!
Kirsten- I rarely even read your posts after that “accidental” post awhile back but I read this part before I read your name. Now this is funny! It gave me a mental image that still has me smiling. HaHa
I lurk on other fans sites too but didn’t see Adam fans bashing Kris’ on his sales. I don’t read twitters on a regular base regarding idols so I didn’t have the first hand observation on that. From your description, I don’t find them interesting and won’t spend my time on them
Twitter is usually filled with stupid people Tweeting useless things, anyway. Idol aside, so really, why make the the basis for anything? Well until Twitter is useful to me again and ceases to be the devil.
Nothing would make me happier.
(Just thought I’d insert a comment on a Headline for variety’s sake. Carry on.)
OMG! My life wouldn’t be complete without reading Kirsten’s posts. Whatever you do, don’t ever skip her Top 10 lists! (For real. No joke.)
I think what some people have been referring to tonight are the news articles that go with the whole “runner-up sold more than winner” stuff. We knew it was coming, had to be expected. Reporters do look for the easy story to tell when they’re on a deadline. Still, I can understand why it bothers people.
Another reason that I thought Lindsey did an excellent job looking at it all from a number of angles, instead of just going for the easy headline.
Or is it something just against lady cats?
Kirsten posted accidentally?
Ah, ya’ caught me. The truth is, I just drank the Subo haterade. She creeps me out. So, I take every opportunity I can to throw in a little dig here and there. I no longer find the fun in busting Gokey’s chops, so you people have to give me a little leeway here.
Slezak’s new Adam video is up.
http://popwatch.ew.com/2009/12/01/adam-lambert-for-your-entertainment/
ETA: And he links to mjsbigblog!
They aren’t on fan sites (at least, not to my knowledge). I think there was a whole thing about how the official sites should be clean and whatever because Kris and Adam are friends and so people tend not to air their grievances on the official sites lest they piss off moderators and/or Adam or Kris troll their official sites and see their fans bashing their friend, etc.
The nastiness can be observed on articles like in Entertainment Weekly, for instance. Remember Slezak came out with the article about Kris’s debut sales? If you read the comments, it would shock you how hateful people are. Some people really wish for Kris to fail and were gleefully celebrating his debut sales paling in comparison to Adam. The Parker article we’re talking about also has a lot of these comments from Adam fans. Some said “Don’t tear Adam down to excuse talenteless Kris,” “America voted for Kris because he was cute and they don’t care for his music, hence the sales” blah blah blah. (the whole cute thing is funny, by the way. It seems to be implying that Adam isn’t cute haha).
Oh, and yeah, and it’s probably good that you stay away from the Tweets. I honestly don’t know how people can fathom tweeting nasty things to people they don’t know. I’ve tweeted Lyndsey Parker before when I’ve disagreed with her views, but never in the fashion these people are doing to her now. It’s one thing to disagree with someone’s view, but to resort to belittling their expertise just because they don’t share the same opinion as you? That’s just not right.
I bet it was her cat. Those felines can be really sneaky.
For real. I’m flabbergasted at the rampant twitter rudeness. It’s like people turn in their manners when they sign up for an account. If I were a celebrity, my career would be in the toilet. I’d be wasting all of my time endlessly blocking my twitter haters.
“OMG! My life wouldn’t be complete without reading Kirsten’s posts. Whatever you do, don’t ever skip her Top 10 lists! (For real. No joke.)”
LOL me too feel that way about Kirsten’s posts! She is the main reason plus Kris Allen’s news, that got me hook to this site!
Sorry – being a cubs fan is tough, but at least your city has had the Bears and the Bulls (I won’t mention the white sox)…. try being a Cleveland sports fan… I think our whole city wins at losing!
Hey, maybe that’s why I get so annoyed when my favorite is trashed… I finally back a winner and I want to enjoy it
Maybe anti-Kris posts/tweets just remind me of Cleveland jokes….hmmmm… where’s a shrink when I need one??
ETA: I totally blame my S8 obsession on the sad state of professional sports in Cleveland. The Cavs get booted from the playoffs within days of the finale… the Indians were already out of it… and the Browns… well, they’re the Browns. All of my sports fandom energy had to be re-channeled to something else, and there was Kris Allen
Wow, it’s sad that Lyndsay Parker filled her article with about a thousand disclaimers about how she was not criticizing either guy and yet she still gets attacked by overzealous twitterers.
I think there is a difference between minimizing someone’s accomplishments (which is what the angry twitter-ers are claiming re: Adam) and putting those accomplishments in perspective. I think Lyndsay was doing the latter. I’d bet money that RCA is doing the same as well. I would think they are breathing more of a sigh of relief over Adam’s numbers as opposed to pulling out the champagne.
I also have an alternative theory (in addition to Lyndsay’s arguments) that one of the reasons Kris sold less than other Idols is because AI did a lousy job of presenting the contestants this year. They wasted so much time on judges and audience manipulation that alot of people did not form a personal connection with anyone on the show. People knew Kris as the cute, nice guy and Adam as the (probably gay) eyeliner wearing guy. Adam has had more of a chance to overcome this disadvantage than Kris through highly publicized interviews in Rolling Stone, Details, 20/20 etc. Those interviews were able to do what the show used to do but failed to do this year – i.e. making people feel like they understood Adam. People who have watched Kris’ interviews since the show complain all the time that AI completey failed to show how funny and precious he is. Unfortunately, the media hasn’t been that interested so only Idol obsessives have seen that side of Kris.
It’s not necessarily Twitter, which is why I don’t think it’s the devil LOL It’s just being online in general. The anonymity that the internet offers people is something that really draws in the crazies. People need to know that what you say on the internet tends to be exaggerated and stuff you probably wouldn’t ever say out loud, and this stuff can really do damage. Parker is exhibit A as a recipient of that nastiness today, and Jason Castro was too when he dared to disagree with Adam’s choice of performance at the AMAs. OMG the tweets to him were absolutely ridiculous. Adam fans were saying that Jason was a nobody and that he was just jealous of Adam’s success, he was being called a homophone, I mean Jesus Christ Twitter is supposed to be used for self-expression and now people can’t say something without fearing backlash of some sort from followers who you never invited to follow you in the first place!
Word, to everything. I know, it’s sad that she felt she needed to have disclaimers in anticipation of some kind of onslaught. And yes to this season not being fair in covering every contestant. Even the preliminary rounds, we never got to see Kris because so much time was spent on the people who were causing the most drama, and yet never even ended up through to Hollywood.
The article seems ridiculous to me. I don’t like to spend hours writing page long posts or reading them. It all seems simple to me. Let’s say Adam sold 50,000 this past week. Kris would still be the lowest selling American Idol winner of all time.
Adam’s sales are not in any way tied in to Kris’ sales. As an AI fan you could buy either cd, or both, or neither.
Blaming Adam or making up excuses for Kris doesn’t take the disappointing numbers away. And they do suck.
Why? I don’t know, I don’t think anyone knows.
If you think American Idol contestants have a difficult time getting acceptance once they leave the bubble, just think how difficult it would be for X-Factor contestants who don’t choose their own songs, have to navigate through the solid gold dancers through half their performances, are led around by a judge with little credibility, and are given standing ovations no matter how poorly they sing. Vegas is the perfect place for this kind of thing though: the land of lounge lizards, showgirls, magicians, and wild animal acts.
By they way, would Simon be judging or just behind the scenes? Because, if judging, boy is that going to seem like a total Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde routine. Mr. Hyde on Idol and the kindly doctor on the X-Factor.
Where in Parker’s article does she blame Adam for Kris’s sales? Kindly point it out, because I don’t see it. Parker said that even without all the hype and all the focus on Adam’s AMAs performance, he would STILL outsell Kris. Doesn’t this just mean she thinks Adam would’ve succeeded just as well? Isn’t this a good thing? To me this was Parker affirming Adam’s talent and pull while on the show.
Parker wasn’t linking Kris’s low sales to Adam’s as some kind of causation and correlation discussion. She was explaining the factors that contributed to such low sales, and on Adam’s side, explained what factors helped HIM with his high sales. The only linking I can see is that both came from American Idol, both had the same platform, and Kris is the winner and Adam is the runner-up. That’s it.
That, is an excellent point. Adam’s extra press did give him an advantage in the sales department.
And ya’ know, (warning, I’m about to say something pretty awful here), the world has always been full of anti-social assholes. Used to be, those types just kept to themselves in their house wearing their tinfoil hats. Then, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs set those nutcakes free. Every fucked up nutter who hates the world now has an internet connection and they are welcome to spread their douchebaggery all over the world.
Outside of Ashton Kutcher, it was probably the most hardcore dickheads on the planet who were Twitter’s early adopters.
It doesn’t make me feel bad. I’m happy that the guy is doing what he loves and making money at it. We should all be so lucky.
You’re absolutely right, Starr. In fact, she acknowledges that the Amazon special deal represented only a tiny fraction of sales and speculates that at most it might have lifted Kris from an 11th place showing to 10th. So if the number’s fairly de minimis, when you’re talking about a 120,000 product swing (200,000 minus 80,000) why devote a paragraph to it? Why say you always suspected Adam would sell more because of his higher media profile and then caveat it by saying, “of course, he’s polarizing and the negative publicity could have worked against him too” and then conclude – well it probably helped somewhat? Does that close the gap and make your case? I honestly don’t think so.
Frankly, the whole article is just stupid to me. Yes, a lot of A-listers are selling poorly in comparison to prior years. Yes, Kris is getting good airplay and his single is trending upward. Yes, Kris is doing well in comparison to releases from other Jive artists. Yes, he will do well touring as Cook did and it will further support his album. Yes, he is making money from songwriting credits. All good valid reasons why it is way too early to declare Kris anything other than a new artist (which he is) starting out. Kris has always been a quick learner and a darkhorse. It will serve him well. Write an article about Kris … ’cause I guarantee, had the focus been solely on Kris – without dragging Adam’s name into it – this would have ended up being a much more positive article than this one turned out to be.
Twitter is supposed to be used as a marketing tool for those in the entertainment business. Jason walked into that one. A little common sense could have been exercised. He is an ex-Idol tweeting about an Idol. Don’t put your opinion out there in twitterland if you don’t want to hear opinions back.
Also, “Glamberts” aren’t the only twitter fools. All fans of idols, movie stars, tv personalities, etc. tweet heated messages when a negative tweet is put out there about their favorite. Just look at the hateful tweets from fans of ALL the idols during the summer tour. No one was left untouched.
I believe Danny, Adam and Megan probably received the most hateful tweets of all of the idols.
Just sayin’, but as a child, I had no greater ambition than to be a Solid Gold Dancer. Those chicks were the coolest things ever to my 9 year old self. Either that, or I totally had plans to win Dance Fever.
(I went a little off the rails there didn’t I?)
Note to: aa618892, input only from my mileage, lol, don’t ever, ever skip a Kirsten post. Skim perhaps and move on, but if you skip it you may just be missing out on the best wit to ever to hit mjsblog! JMO and again, ymmv.
ETA: I see SpenserJ concurs!
Hmm I agree it would have been nice had Parker’s article focused on the individuals, and maybe she wouldn’t have gotten criticism for making comparisons. However, you can’t really say that what she did (comparing the 2 Idols’ album sales) was unique. Articles have been online in the past week comparing Kris’s low sales and Adam’s high sales, and no one was storming the gates then. It just so happens that this article was interpreted by some Adam fans as some sort of propping up of Kris at the expense of Adam, which is funny, because when it’s articles that prop Adam up at the expense of Kris, these same people either remain silent or they encourage it.
I also honestly don’t think it would make that much of a difference had they been written about separately. An example would be bringing up Slezak’s EW article again on Kris’s low sales debut numbers. He talked ONLY about Kris. But what comments did that article get? All this talk about how these low sales were indicative of Kris’s failing career, he was never supposed to win, yada yada yada, the same effect all these articles linking Adam and Kris have now.
And let’s say Parker wrote about Adam’s sales in a separate piece, but she still had the same position (just edit the stuff about Kris out). People still disliked the fact that she brought up how the controversy of the AMAs helped Adam instead of hurting him. For some reason people thought that was a jab at Adam.
I thought Parker’s article was an attempt to respond to all these other articles floating around the net about how Kris is the worst Idol winner ever based on these initial sales. She’s basically doing what we do here at mj’s – injecting some perspective into what hasty conclusions people sometimes make in light of certain information.
What she also attempted to do was respond to those same people who were declaring that Adam’s sales were all an indication that he should’ve won AI, was the most popular, etc. She’s saying that you can’t make those assertions without taking into account that several factors were in play that contributed to Adam’s popularity, factors that could have definitely affected his sales.
But of course darling
Oh my, I almost missed this. Wow, that really is just sad. Honestly, if it weren’t for that old Major League movie, I’m not sure I would have ever known Cleveland even had a baseball team. So, I’m guessing this would be a bad time to tell my little story about a few years ago when I got to drink beer out of the Stanley Cup? LOL

LOL! I think that’s why my husband may have some empathy for me, he’s a Cleveland sports fan! Mainly the Browns and Indians, but the Cavs as well. He is a college FB fan though as well, go Buckeyes!!!
I never said Glamberts are the only Twitter fools; I was referring to a particular instance, tonight, where they besieged Parker with their nasty comments. Like I said, it’s one thing to disagree with someone, but to tell Parker that she is being bought off by 19/Jive to make Kris look good, or that she lost all credibility just because she dared to disagree with the opinion of her fellow Adam fans, that’s not something that I think people should be entitled to do on Twitter. But hey, maybe I’m an idealist, and I expect too much of people when I say that I expect them to be classy and agree to disagree, but not attack someone because they had a dissenting opinion.
All I’m saying about the Twitter thing is that it seems all is well and good if what is said is something one agrees with. If it’s not, people feel entitled to lambast the person tweeting. If Jason Castro said “Wow! Adam’s performance was ZOMG amazing!” he would get tweets left and right from Adam fans telling him how awesome he is and how he’s a favorite, etc etc. And this isn’t just exclusive to Adam fans. Everyone is this way on Twitter; and my complaint is this exact fickleness. I hate when people are good to you if you do good by them, but when they disagree, you drop ‘em like it’s hot. That’s all I’m saying.
We can disagree without being disagreeable, to quote a certain someone Kris was tweeting about today
Just popping in for a moment.
Thanks for posting that info GG. I LOVE that song. Every time I hear it, it makes me cry.
Someone mentioned about the economy being an issue for CD sales, but I heard that black Friday and Cyber Monday sales are expected to be much higher than last year, so unfortunately for last year’s guys, it was a bad time to be releasing a CD.
Common decency is not too much to expect from people.
This is always hilarious to me, the way people seem to declare someone their mortal enemy for having a different opinion. My husband and I differ a lot in the political spectrum. We rarely vote for the same candidates. Many a lively debate is had in the Chez Spens. Yet somehow, after all this time, we can still be respectful of each other’s opinions, and the differences don’t seem to change the fact that we really dig each other. So, when strangers are hateful to each other on twitter over stuff that’s meaningless, all I can do is LMAO.
Actually, I think it’s an attempt to preempt those articles which won’t really hit the net until the final numbers are in – this week.
And Adam has always had tons of nastiness about him on EW, lots of it personal and just ugly. The interwebz has been especially filled with anti-Adam statements vis-a-vis the AMAs and his subsequent interviews or whatever. I think there was only some swinging back, and only some mind you, when CBS did it’s blurring of the Tommy/Adam kiss and not the Brit-Brit/Madonna one. So as an Adam fans I thank CBS for their fuckery, as someone who is interested in equal rights, not so happy.
Anyhew, loved the Slezak/Adam interviews. Very informative and talking about the music and they had a nice rapport. Very cute. I love Jim, but he’s not Slezak or Michelle Collins when it comes to Adam. But hey, different people, different rapports. Though gotta say at this point Slezak is pulling ahead because he’s gotten great interviews from all of Kradison and he really tried with Danny. I swears!
Oh and speaking about Danny, I really wanted to say good for him in the newest promotions and I’m glad his information is being spread here as well as videos of this stuff. Whatever problems I ever had with Danny? the vast majority of his fans rock, so I’m always glad for you guys
Yes, yes it would.
Be kind to your husband, he’s suffered a lot.
Sounds intriguing indeed, lol!
LOL, I’ve come to realize this! He used to be the eternal optimist, now he says the Indians will probably win the World Series the year after he dies.
But hey, as a wise one once said to me, at least Cleveland is home to the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame!
Actually, it’s probably too late.My husband came home telling me about a story on his yahoo home page today declaring Kris to have the lowest sales of any Idol winner. The story also said Adam had sold 225K.
(BTW, hubby never talks about AI.)
I’m afraid these kind of articles are what most of those outside of the bubble will see and read. Parker’s article will mostly be read and debated inside the bubble. So, all it did was stir the shit some more.
Yay a Browns fan! Tell your hubby “Hi” from one Cleveland fan to another! I love living in Ohio. Even though the Browns stink worse then David Cook’s poor Chiefs!
Oh good, something like that is needed, imo, and I’m surprised, but happy LP did this. I believe she explained the situation well, while still saying Adam’s album probably would have sold better anyway-which I agree with.
I will!
And I appreciate musicians who are also sports fans, because this describes my hubby to a T.
Well it’s not really preemptive if they are already out there. Just recently, the Access Hollywood article was released comparing the album sales of both Idols as well; of course, the headline was Kris “flopping” in first week album sales. Some headlines even edit out the part about it being a first week thing; they misleadingly say “Kris Allen’s debut album flops, has the worst sales of any Idol winner”. Trust me. I’m not making this stuff up. I would love to see nothing but positivity on the net about Kris, but it’s damn near impossible.
Well, many people were offended by the AMAs performance, so I’m not surprised he got crap for it. I’m not condoning the homophobic comments by some of those same people, though. I’ve noticed that the majority of articles on Adam though that elicit strong reactions are the ones that have to do with something Adam did. Like, say, for the Details photo shoot. He got a lot of crap for that too from people in the gay community. The OUT magazine controversy, the AMAs. Kris only has to EXIST and people are giving him crap just because they think he was undeserving of the AI crown. It could be an article on how Kris saves a baby from a burning building and SOMEONE is bound to pop up and say “But ADAM WAS ROBBED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
But in all seriousness, there is tons of crap on the interweb about Kris, and he’s not even polarizing at all like Adam is. He continues to heap praise after praise on Adam and all his peers, remains gracious and classy even when he’s being dogged when people ask him about Adam in interviews, and keeps dropping sincerely adorable phrases like “people should be nice to people” (re: Christians being nice to gays question in the LOGO interview) and STILL the one mistake that devalues all of that is that he had the audacity to win American Idol. Kind of sad.
You’re right. It IS too late. I think Parker should have come out with this article sooner. Tomorrow, first week album sales won’t be the talked about thing anymore, as Kris will be doing a lot of gigs for these Jingle Ball things and the focus will finally go back to what really matters.
Nope! There are ugly, homophobic comments on the album reviews. Adam can have an article about his charity and that will receive ugly comments. Hell, that’s happened here.
I don’t care if Adam poses naked(well,I would really care!)- it wouldn’t justify homophobic comments. No one “deserves” those kinds of comments.
There won’t be big articles on the yahoo home page about the jingle bell balls. People outside of the bubble aren’t going to read this detailed article about AI sales. (I barely got through it.) I read it as a bunch of excuses.
Kris has the lowest sales of any AI winner. That fact doesn’t go away and you will see it mentioned in articles for a long time.
I have been to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 49 times. Cleveland Rocks! I am waiting to see if Adam’s outfit from the AMA will land in their display case for the newer artists.
I do feel Kris’ sales have been influenced by the economy. Also, so many Idols have CDs out and there’s only so much money to spend in a limited budget. I just hope he continues to do what he loves. Same with Adam.
Unfortunately, I don’t think this will be the case. Generally, it’s only the inside-the-Idol-bubble people who are talking about the preliminary numbers, i.e Slezak, Parker (she really jumped the gun with her 225,000 figure) – with maybe a few outsiders picking up the story. I believe the mainstream media will wait until final numbers are in. But, truly, neither of us really knows … and we’ll find out soon enough.
Yay I’m appriciated! I can multitask and be a music and sports fan.
Dude, that was your fault? Whew, I thought it was me. Did you also dig Ade last season? Travis and Natalie Season 2? Danny Tidwell? Anyway, please don’t root for Jakob, kthx, cuz I’m looking to improve my record to 1 and 5.
Hahaha. I’ll see your Solid Gold ambitions and raise you a Fly Girl. J Lo’s ass was such an inspiration.
I don’t think Kris’ sales being talked about is even relevant. We’ve seen idols who sell big first weeks, tank later and that was the point Lyndsey was trying to make and ended up doing so in a weird way. As a Kris fan, I don’t really care if it is even talked about everywhere in the world, and I don’t think it bothers him. As far as he is able to sell enough in the end, which I think he will, it’s not a big deal.
It’s only idol fans and the media who care about these. The music buyer who hears Kris’ music on air and likes it is not going to look at his low sales before buying.
As Kirsten pointed out in the mediabase thread yesterday, he’ll make his big money from his songwritting anyway. In the end, he will be okay. I don’t think earning over $30,000 from 80,000 albums sold for songwritting credits only is bad at all for Kris. The media can write whatever they want. I now see why Kris is chill and Jive is so confident. He is really in for the long haul.
According to AO, looks like Adam’s got a couple more appearances lined up. So it looks like any Adam fans who were concerned about ABC blackballing him or something can rest easy, his Kimmel concert performance will be on ABC.
