Exactly. I, too, am in the desired demo. I don’t know of ONE person at my college who watches Idol live on TV. Not one! (I don’t even watch it on TV and I’m such an Idol freak). So, you may be right, movin2thabeet, blocking youtube and dailymotion uploads may actually serve to discourage younger viewers from keeping up with the show.

I think the fact that the networks are now streaming most their programming online is really smart, because that's the kind of access that builds fans, loyalty, buzz about the show/season, and if the program is good enough to get the online audience hooked, they might decide not to wait the couple days for it to be posted, and watch it in realtime. With AI, what happens a lot is that when the big moment performances generate watercooler talk, they make the rounds online, and sometimes, that gets people to watch a particular season. Internet looky-loos can convert to a captive audience if the clips are good enough. And that is the kind of free advertising the internet can give you, so AI is being dumb with this move, IMO. And this may just be me, but personally, I'm more likely to get invested in a season if I know that I'd be able to catch episodes online if I miss one or two. If I miss a few episodes and can't catch up anywhere, I usually get fed up and might even give up on the whole season. If I find out I missed a really good season after the fact, I'll just wait for the DVD or something, but I guess since AI isn't on DVD, they would've lost me completely. Maybe so, but concern over the aging TV viewership is probably about who sticking around to watch the commercials rather than who will buy the music after the winner is crowned. Ratings and target demographics are mostly about the advertising revenue.
