Idol Headlines for 12/14/07

Today’s Idol headlines after the jump…

‘American Idol’ to focus less on celebs

“American Idol” executive producer Nigel Lythgoe says fans should expect fewer celebrity cameos and more focus on the individual contestants this season - the singing competition’s seventh.

Lythgoe blames the show’s spotlight on A-list mentors rather than the contestants themselves for the talent juggernaut’s dip in ratings last year.

“What I want to do is ensure the talent is strong, because that is what will make people come back, and I think that’s what we forgot at the end of last season,” Lythgoe told reporters in a conference call Thursday. “It’s not about the judges and its not about the mentors, it’s about the program as a whole, and first and foremost, it’s about the kids.”…….

Producer Promises Fewer Celebrity Mentors, Judges — And No Britney Spears

….”Three [contestants] that I’m positive will be in our top 12 [played instruments and] were terrific, and a couple of others really just crashed and burned. It’s very difficult to sing in tune and play drums at the same time. It’s a complete nightmare.” He also mentioned that this year’s competition has three or four very promising singers who are 16 and 17 years old.

Another change will be that this year’s show will feature fewer celebrity mentors and judges, and focus more intently on the contestants’ stories. Lythgoe admitted “Idol” got away from that thread a bit last year — to the show’s detriment….

Steven Tyler Made Kelly Clarkson ‘Walk Away’

She may be the original and most successful “American Idol” to date, but it seems there is only one man (some years her senior) that Miss Kelly Clarkson just can’t enough of, although he was the one who made her “Walk Away.”

“Steven Tyler is an inspiration, he and his music. Sexy, sassy and in your face and just strong,” Clarkson recently told us. “He makes me want to … write. One of the things that inspired me whenever I was writing on ‘Walk Away,’ the song, you know, the bridge, is like you’re preaching at someone and it’s very soulful with a rock vibe to it. So I totally would think of Steven Tyler — what would he do while he’s performing?”

Blake Lewis | “Audio Day Dream”

With the debut of its most recent winner, Jordin Sparks, barely scraping the Top 10, “American Idol” quickly sends in the runner-up — beat-boxer Blake Lewis — to see how much bounce to the ounce he’ll muster.

The second string (heck, even the third string) has been good for “Idol”dom. But this time, the pickings aren’t so lush. Despite the presence of rapper Lupe Fiasco on the bippity-bobbity “Know My Name,” Lewis has made a mess that’s screwier than his thrift-shop wardrobe.

Lewis’ slight but solid vocals can’t always carry the weight of the melodic banality put forth on songs like “Surrender” by Ryan Tedder, the songwriter from OneRepublic. But the halting “Gots to Get Her” has just enough eau de “Puttin’ on the Ritz” to make it zesty. On this song, at least, Lewis’ warbling trills are cute indeed.

Clark Brothers still in it; taking one show at a time
We talked to Franklin County’s Austin Clark, who said he and his brothers are happy to have another chance to perform.

Three Franklin County musicians are amazed at their good fortune, seven weeks into their run on a Fox network reality show

The Clark Brothers — Ashley, Austin and Adam — have continued to impress judges and fans on “The Next Great American Band.” The next episode airs at 9 tonight.

Before that episode is halfway over, the Clarks will know whether they’ve survived another week. They’re among the last four bands left on the show, which was created by the producers of “American Idol.”

As with that show, performers’ survival depends on audience votes.

However it ends tonight, the Clarks count it as a win, Austin Clark said…………

Daughtry, Carrie rack up Billboard honors

Billboard, the venerable music trade magazine, just issued its 2007 awards. Being sales, airplay or revenue-based as they are, the awards would be expected to recognize some of the more successful Idols, and so they do.

Especially Daughtry, who racks up a closetful of awards. In the top artists lists, based on a combination of sales and airplay success, he comes in fourth for the year, behind only Akon, Fergie and Justin Timberlake. And, as an added Idol bonus, Carrie is fifth, ahead of Beyonce, Nickelback, Avril Lavigne, T-Pain and Gwen Stefani.

Daughtry’s self-titled album is the best seller of the year (basically a November to November proposition). It sold 3.2 million in that timespan. Carrie’s Some Hearts comes in fifth here with 2.3 million…..

Reality show highlights Nashville’s musical pool

When Nashville country-rock group Sixwire made its debut on Fox reality-competition program The Next Great American Band, frontman Andy Childs tried to show viewers what kind of musical environment the band had come from.

“We represent today’s Nashville, which is a little different,” he said in their introduction segment. “It’s not your grandpappy’s Nashville.”

For the past seven weeks that the program — a spinoff of American Idol — has aired, that point has been hammered home to America, as three of the show’s four finalists — Sixwire, Denver and the Mile High Orchestra, and the Clark Brothers — hail from Nashville, each bringing with them a different side of the city’s multi-faceted music scene. The fourth band is Light of Doom from San Marcos, Calif.

The presence of the local bands on the show does its part in illustrating to the nation what Nashville has known for years: that the city’s wealth of unsung talent doesn’t just come from country.

Band executive producer Nigel Lythgoe, who’s also behind Idol and So You Think You Can Dance?, doesn’t seem surprised by Nashville’s heavy presence in the finals…………

More acclaim! This time, from iTunes. If you select “Editor’s Choice” in the iTunes application, they have several categories in which several artists/videos/songs are selected.

    Best Country Music Videos

    “So Small” (Carrie Underwood)

    Best New Pop Artists

    Daughtry
    Elliott Yamin

I found it interesting that Carrie wasn’t mentioned in the “Best Country Songs” or “Best Country Albums” category and Daughtry wasn’t mentioned in the “Best Rock Songs” or “Best Rock Albums” category.

definatly will be great exposure for Jordin doing the National Anthem for the Super Bowl. it looks like that and a few other TV appearances before that will keep her out there which will hopefully help her album sales . a week later her 2nd single No Air will be released officially to radio and i am hoping for an Idol performance with Chris Brown for that .

Thanks to the organizers and my idol, Mr. Louie Ocampo, for having me do all he charts for that gig, thereby providing much needed funds for my upcoming wedding. Haha. :-)

This is probably the first time I’ll have jetlag without having to leave the country. Haha.

Also, this will be the first time I’ll be using both my Hammond XK2 and my Motion Sound leslie simulator outside my studio. (Well, the Hammond got rented for Babyface’s concert.)

Hope to see you in one of the gigs.

Oh, by the way, the band members are:

Louie Ocampo — 1st keys and Musical Director
    Mike (I’ll find out his family name next time :-) He’s an LA-based Fil-Am session-drummer) — drums
Tots Tolentino — sax and flute
    Bobby Taylo — bass
    Ric Mercado — guitars
    Rickson Ruiz — percussion

For LBB, the Soul Patrol, and other interested parties: ;)

The sponsor is apparently doubling its promo efforts and has now put up a Taylor Hicks billboard along EDSA (where Elliott’s was also put up before). I also believe there are daily ads in the major newspapers. The malls have also released flyers and streamers for the shows. Only 100 stubs (each) will be issued for the two Makati shows, with essentially the same mechanics to get passes and M&G stubs as in the Elliott shows (i.e., line up early in the mornings and race to the Concierge booths as the malls open).

I found one thing a bit curious, though…the flyers and ads (I forget about the billboard and streamers) do not at all indicate that Taylor Hicks is THE American Idol; there is no AI mention at all…

Wow, it’s taking alot of will power not to snark on “Taylor Hicks, American Original.” Sorry, Taylor is as “original” as Daughtry which of course, is not very. At least Daughtry has the humility to ape Nickelback while Taylor actually thinks he’s can copy Ray Charles. Either way, I don’t see an “orginal.” If Elliott starts tagging himself as “American Original,” I’ll be lmao as well.

  17. 17 purplesmile Dec 14th, 2007 at 11:13 am

Bobbi, Margaux, I was just thinking that it might help in the promo department, since Taylor isn’t really getting any current airplay or exposure here and AI5 was quite a while ago that people might have forgotten he is the same guy that won. Apparently, non-avid fans or AI watchers don’t really remember names (or faces) very well. For instance, as I was inquiring with a lady staff at the mall concierge earlier, the guy manning the desk with her asked, “Who is Taylor Hicks?” and the girl responded, “He was an American Idol;” he then replied, “Aaah.” :s Oh, well…these shows are perhaps really meant mainly for those who are fans, anyway. :)

Margaux, yes, I might try for a meet and greet, if it’s not going to be too much of a hassle (the shows are on workdays; but my office is located very near the venues). At any rate, I’d be content, too, to just watch him from outside the seating areas; the venues are pretty small, anyway, and I would likely still get a good view if I go early enough. What I’m really hoping for, though, is for him to go play at a bar (maybe Hard Rock, which is a sponsor?) where I can sit and drink and get to watch an “unadulterated” Taylor performance. ;)

I’ll try to recap, but I’m making no promises (I didn’t even get to recap any of Elliott’s shows properly and I saw four of them, heh). ;)

At least Daughtry has the humility to ape Nickelback while Taylor actually thinks he’s can copy Ray Charles.

I’m not going to get into an argument about who thinks what and who is aping whom, I just have to say that I’d prefer people to try to emulate the greats than somebody derided as derivative.

I care nothing for humility when it comes to who somebody uses as a role model. I’m sure if you asked Chris D, he did not set out to deliberately be a clone of Nickelback and he might even be somewhat disturbed with the claim that he is aping them. If you asked his role models, you might get an array of artists (some of whom, like Elton John, would almost seem against type).

Few artists are truly original. You can typically trace the genesis of their style through a number of sources. Most artists will proudly tell you who influenced them. I appreciate artists who choose to learn from the legends in the business. Whether it be Elton or Ray or Babs or Doug E Fresh.

Please don’t take this is a fanwar posting in anyway. It is not meant to criticize any particular Idol for chosing any particular mentor. I’m just saying that I find it odd to say that it is better to ape somebody who is not respected than attempt to be like somebody who is truly great. I’m not even prepared to get into an argument about whether or not Ray Charles is better than Nickelback. It doesn’t matter. I object to the notion that one should not aim too high.

Strive to be the best you can be at what you chose to do. Emulate the greats. Don’t let some odd sense of humility cause you to chose a lesser role model.

(cue triumphant trumpets playing. Sorry for trying to be so inspirational so early in the morning, but I tire of the worship of “Jackass” and the vilification of those who strive to do their best. The OP probably didn’t mean to support that (and is probably shaking her head at the tangent I’ve launched into), but the post triggered a pet peeve of mine).

Not only has Josh Groban benefited from superb marketing, but there really is no competition in this year’s Holiday CD releases. And, Eagles aside, you can’t count releases exclusive to Target, Starbucks, Hallmark or other outlets.

Most Novembers I scout the holiday CD displays for something new. It was clear that Josh was going to be it. And not interesting enough to add to my collection.

I ended up purchasing two Target exclusives and downloading tracks from Joan Osborne and Denver/MHO. I would have downloaded Carrie’s Do You Hear What I Hear, but as others have noted, it’s available as a single track download.

I’ve listened to Josh Groban’s holiday cd. It’s good but not great. He reminds me of Carrie Underwood. Both have impressive voices and can sing their hearts out but I’m not usually compelled to actually buy either of their records.

That said, I did buy Groban’s new cd, not for me but for my 15 year old daughter–the one who usually listens to groups like Fall Out Boy. For some reason she adores JG and has every intention of marrying him someday. Go figure.

  28. 28 jpfan Dec 14th, 2007 at 2:42 pm

I enjoyed reading your post Kirsten. I was just responding to the fact that Taylor’s PR identified him as “American Orignal.” And I agree very, very few artists can make that claim and I don’t see Taylor as one who can. They all start out influenced by their favorite artists but some can bring something new and special to the table. I guess Taylor’s fans think he has.

I usually judge artists in their genre. In other words, if you’re a rapper are you among the best in your genre. So to be honest I would see an excellent rapper like Emminem as a stronger artist than someone in a more respected genre like opera who is not very strong in that area. So the influence is important but not as important as being the best no matter who influenced you. I hope that made sense. I know that not everyone agree with me. That’s why I liked Kelly’s pop stuff better than her recent attempt at more “meaningful” music.

I agree with you. That’s why I threw in Doug E Fresh. I’m not a follower of the beat-box movement, but he is apparently quite the pioneer and very good at what he does. So, I think that he would be a good influence for those who wish to add some beat-box spice to their artistic goulash.

Obviously, opera will not necessarily be a primary influence for all artists (although, one would be well served to learn their breathing/support techniques in order to preserve one’s voice…).

BTW I noticed over at Idol Chatter the following:

A big change on Idol Gives Back: Instead of going through the fake elimination threat soap opera that ended up with no one going home on Idol Gives Back night, there will be no elimination charade on this year’s IGB. Instead, they’ll add a special Thursday elimination show.

I didn’t notice this in the other news reports, so I’m sorry if I missed it. I just think it is a good idea not to roll over the votes to the next week and that eliminating somebody during the IGB would be in bad taste. I’m glad they are trying something different.

From TOSP - A post about the final album listings for the year.

“Mr. Hick’s self-titled debut CD nabbed Billboard’s #74 slot for album of the year! Congratulations Taylor!!

Here’s how other Idol albums did this year:

Carrie Underwood’s sophomore album “Carnival Ride” finished at #56; Kelly Clarkson’s “My December” took the #66 spot; Kellie Pickler’s “Small Town Girl” was #95; Fantasia’s self-titled second disc was #105; Elliott Yamin finished at #114; Katharine McPhee grabbed #159, and Bucky Covington took #187.

Also, Taylor’s single, “Just To Feel That Way” comes in at the #47 Song of the Year on the Radio & Records (used for Billboard Placement and Radio Airplay) Adult Contemporary Charts for the year ending 2007!”

So with 350K shipped, his label expected first-week sales to be anywhere from 117K to 175K.

So is that the magic formula? The label expects the artists to sell 1/3 to 1/2 of the total shipped in the first week?

That’s what those “experts” at Pulse tell me. :)

Where did all these numbers come from? I mean, other than from some message board.

Please, if you post information, please link to an authoritative source. Thank you.

I’m a Josh Groban fan but I agree with someother posters that it’s not my favorite of his CD’s it’s good but not great. I can’t believe it’s selling that well but of course I though Chris’s CD was good, not great, and I can’t believe it’s selling the way it is. Clay’s Christmas CD is one of my favorites, I seem to like to hear the melody and hear the words of music and find that hard to do these days. :annoyed_tb:

Thanks a million, Highway, for posting the complete list of Daughtry’s Billboard honors. I had read there were 11 but I couldn’t find but 10. I notice you found the one that eluded me.

So is that the magic formula? The label expects the artists to sell 1/3 to 1/2 of the total shipped in the first week?

Daughtry reportedly shipped 700K, sold 304k(43%) in first week.

Clarkson shipped 800k, sold 290K(36%) in first week.

Both were in that magic range… :mellow_tb:

LOL, Lu! Sir Mix would be proud, no doubt. Heh. :)
