Idol Worship: Catching Up With David Archuleta

David Archuleta within driving distance? We’re there! Since Archie was back in Hollywood last weekend to shoot a performance for the Nickeleodeon hit show iCarly, we decided to pop by the set and catch up with last season’s American Idol runner-up. We arrived to to find David and iCarly star Miranda Cosgrove knee-deep in taping promos for his guest-starring role (airing Feb. 7), which can only be described as moments of acute awkwardness. But he got the hang of it soon enough, and even hinted later that there could be more acting gigs in his future. After performing two songs for the network’s “Crush Night” (his first hit, “Crush,” and second single, “A Little Too Not Over You”), David sat down to talk to us about this new phase in his life, and what may come next (a duet with Miranda?!). RE: the mutual admiration between DC and Carrie, I think it’s so cool, and it really has done wonders for my opinion of Carrie. I always admired her vocal chops, but now I’m liking her as a person a lot more. I’m willing to give her the benefit of the doubt when she comes off wrong in the media just because I figure if DC likes her so much, she must be really genuine in person haha. Lame, I know.

Thing is, I really don’t enjoy country, but because her voice is so good, I will listen to all her less-country sounding songs. And I tend to like all her covers– especially the more rock-leaning ones, cuz she really has a voice for it. I’m also noticing that she has pretty eclectic taste in music, including a lot of rock, which ups her likeability factor for me. I remember reading a concert review where the journalist called her a closet rocker, and described the rock covers she did. Sounds pretty cool– I’ll definitely try to head out to a show if she ever comes my way.

Archies and cougars, sound the alarm! American Idol Season 7 runner-up David Archuleta is taking his show on the road. Altogether, the 17-year-old tenor will hit 20 stops on his North American trek, which stretches from February 24 to March 21.

Meanwhile, on his MySpace blog, Archuleta let fans know that he’d taped an episode of the Nickelodeon hit iCarly, which is set to air on February 7.

The “Crush” singer also gave his followers another juicy tidbit, about his whereabouts last weekend. “This Saturday was another extremely exciting day, because I got to go to Senior Ball at my high school,” David writes.

“I didn’t think I’d ever get another chance to go to a school dance, but I asked management and they gave the ok and made time in the schedule for me to go. I had soooo much fun!”

Nickelodeon’s pre-Valentine’s “Crush Night” is music to kids’ ears when teen “Idol” David Archuleta takes on his newest challenge: The crush-worthy singing sensation makes his acting debut on the mega-hit iCarly, and helps kick off all-new episodes of back-to-back romance-themed primetime premieres, Saturday, February 7 (8-9:30 p.m. ET/PT). Archuleta, whose hit single “Crush” is topping the Billboard charts, teams up with iCarly headliner Miranda Cosgrove to celebrate teen romance as they host the night from the set of iCarly. Archuleta performs his current hit “Crush” (February 7) and his new single, “A Little Too Not Over You” — debuting the new tune on TV within Nick’s Crush Night encore, Sunday, February 15 — in front of adoring fans, and the duo also unveils premieres of iCarly, True Jackson, VP and The Naked Brothers Band.

Archuleta, 17, affirms his first acting gig was enjoyable and came with a couple of perks. “I was nervous and thought I’d be awful, but it felt really comfortable and came pretty easily since I was allowed to play myself. With ‘iCarly’ I got to hang out with kids my own age for a change, and that was a real bonus.” An added plus was the network itself. “I’m a huge fan of Nickelodeon’s, and two of my favorite shows growing up were Kenan & Kel and All That, so it was especially cool to make my acting debut on a Nick show.”

Crush Night will encore on Sunday, February 15 as part of Nickelodeon’s Spectacular Presidents’ Weekend, as Archuleta and Cosgrove also answer crush-related questions submitted by the nick.com audience, and Archuleta performs his new single for the first time on TV. Nickelodeon’s multi-platform efforts for Crush Night include a sneak peek of all three premieres and additional footage (“Extra Scoops”) on TurboNick and Nick’s wireless partners, beginning January 26, and the entire Crush Night programming event will be simulcast on Nick Mobile. Amen to that! I’ve never sat through all of auditions and all this nicey-nice (apologizing when a crap singer cries because they get a crap critique?) is starting to grate on me. Let’s get real on these kids.
