Let it be: ‘Idol’ brings in genre format too soon By Ayla Brown

The last two weeks of Fox’s “American Idol” have been all about the legendary Beatles. The contestants showed off a diverse selection of song choices from the Beatles library, but they didn’t achieve what they had hoped for. The judges had nothing positive to say about song selection. Even America’s favorites, Brooke White, Jason Castro and Michael Johns, all struggled last week with their material. In the end, however, it was Amanda Overmyer’s rendition of “Back in the U.S.S.R.” that got her eliminated from the show, rightfully so.

“Idol” should not have started this season with genres. In previous years, the genres didn’t start until the Top 12. I think the show should have continued that tradition this season. Forcing the Top 24 contestants to sing songs they normally wouldn’t prohibits them from expressing themselves musically.

When I was a contestant, we could choose the songs we wanted in the first few rounds of the show. By doing this, America got an idea of who we were as performers. Starting the genres so early limits the contestants’ freedom of expression.

‘American Idol’ hits a sour note in season 7

‘ American Idol”: Can you think of any two words that spark greater debate - with the exception of ” Mets” and “Yankees?” This season, ratings are down (a bit) and passions are high. Is this the most boring season ever, or is this the best? TV editor Andy Edelstein and TV writer Verne Gay square off over the most Important Question on TV (at least for this moment).

I used to be an “American Idol” fan, eagerly looking forward to each week’s shows. But now I watch it solely because of professional obligation. And that’s no way to watch TV.

This season, the show has become, to borrow one of Simon Cowell’s pet put-downs, “predictable.” And that’s putting it charitably.

The ‘American Idol’ Top 10: Who can win, who can’t?

Something very strange is going on with “American Idol” this year. It’s way too normal.

As the top 10 contestants take the stage Tuesday (7 p.m., WFLD-Ch. 32 ), there’s barely a ripple of controversy, compared with past seasons. Sure, there was the blip caused by the emergence of former contestant David Hernandez’s past as a stripper. And the talent contest endured a fair amount of criticism for showcasing singers who’ve had record deals in the past. But even those “controversies” didn’t have much staying power.

Where did it all go wrong? Isn’t “American Idol” supposed to be a long festival of outrageousness and scandals? Plus a little singing?

Meet Britney, the Original American Idol

Long before Simon Cowell had his grips on American Idol contestant Kristy Lee Cook, another pop diva played mentor to the Carrie Underwood wannabe.

Back in 2000, Britney Spears signed 17-year-old Kristy as the first artist in her newly formed production company.

“Britney would tell her how beautiful and talented she was,” says Marty Rendleman, Kristy’s manager at the time. “She told her that she would do whatever she needed to promote her and help launch her career.”

American Idol: Carly Hennessy 2.0

It’s impossible to take a serious look at this crazy-cool season of American Idol and not consider the strange case of Carly Smithson.

Smithson, the Irish-born 24-year-old and former Carly Hennessy who once opened for Bryan Adams (at Dublin Castle, in 2002, according to an old MCA Records web page) has arguably been Idol’s most consistent performer to date.

Consistency didn’t count for much last week, though, as she found herself in the bottom three, in the first real shock result of the season.

The Full Package: Jim Verraros

For even the most obsessed queer “American Idol” fans among us, reciting the names of the Seven Dwarves would be easier than recalling all the finalists from the mega-hit show’s original season. Of course there’s winner Kelly Clarkson, who’s gone on to sell millions of records, win Grammys and star in wacky Vitamin Water commercials. After her, things start getting fuzzy. (Wasn’t there a semi-hot runner-up whose massive ‘fro was outdone only by his ego, and a fiery-haired karaoke queen and a pretty rocker chick who bared her midriff any chance she got?)

But then there’s Jim Verraros, whose blip on the gay radar has not just grown stronger since the show’s seminal first run — it’s gone brilliantly radioactive.

I have some people that I like. It’s hard for me to choose ‘a favorite.’ I’m a real song guy. Pop Tarts: Randy, Simon Dis Ryan Seacrest’s Details Magazine Cover

It’s no secret that “American Idol” judge Simon Cowell isn’t exactly best buddies with host Ryan Seacrest, but the caustic critic went a step further at Thursday’s “Mavericks” Details magazine party when he dissed the cover of the April issue featuring Seacrest.

“There looks like a lot of work has been done — Ryan doesn’t look that good in real life,” Cowell told Pop Tarts with a groan. “As for the report that he’s the ‘King of Media’ — I presume he wrote the article himself. It’s annoying.”

Fox News

Ryan Seacrest, Inc.

If, like me, you can’t comprehend the success of Ryan Seacrest because he has no discernible talent, then this will really perplex: he’s quickly becoming “the next Dick Clark, Merv Griffin, Larry King, for our generation”. So he says to TV critic Tom Shales. But who he’s really mimicking is Rupert Murdoch. The Viscount of Vapidness is paid an estimated $12.5 million annually just for hosting American Idol, not counting all the ancillary gigs he’s lined up. (Whereas Simon Cowell makes $42 million a year, from Idol and other sources.) seacrest.jpgBut Seacrest has so many gigs: a 3-year, $21 million deal with E! Entertainment Network to host its special event programming and Red Carpet coverage. The reason he fronts the E! News show is because he has a production deal with that network and shares the ownership in those shows. He also has investments in eight Southern California restaurants, runs a half-dozen media companies and recently launched “The ‘R’ Line” fashion label. In April, he’s taking 3 hours of his daily 5-hour L.A. radio show national, via syndication, and as an unprecedented part of the deal his advertising company retains 10 minutes of the commercial time on the show to sell on its own, so that the profit goes right back to Seacrest and not through any network or syndicator.

Grading the iTunes Hits

Jordin Sparks: “No Air [feat. Chris Brown].” Holy shit: epic histrionic all-climax tingling synthpop, a welcome reminder that American Idol, for all its faults, still provides us the service of getting people who can actually sing on the radio. Chris Brown can’t hang with Sparks vocally, so he underplays his role, playing foil with his vulnerable little-kid schtick while Sparks just roils volcanically over him. I love the Edge-esque guitar-ripples, the delicate little string arpeggios, and the lyrical idea that this breakup is actually choking the air out of the kids singing about it, especially since the two people singing it manage to sound legitimately torn apart. Grandiloquent teen-heartbreak silliness doesn’t get any more operatic than this. 8.9

A couple of articles refer to declining ratings this year. The auditions were down alot but I thought ratings had stabilized from S6. I did notice that the results show last week was down significantly. An hour show where only the last five minutes mean anything is pretty boring.

The contestants have to change it up and show they can handle more than one genre or I see further ratings declines. The season started out okay but just seems to be less fun as it goes on. I don’t see anyone from the crew shaking it up either. While S6 didn’t give enough time to the idols and too much to the mentors, they’ve gone too far to do the opposite. Although, the contestants this year are so locked in their niches I don’t really see what Dolly Parton and the others can do with them except reveal their limits.

‘American Idol’ hits a sour note in season 7

I’m so glad I don’t agree. I love Season 7. I understand the author’s complaints about “predictability” but only mainly to the extent of the judging. I agree with him on this, though…

Any show where Kristy Lee Cook survives another week is a show that deserves to be slapped upside the head.

    ;D

  3. 3 abbysee Mar 25th, 2008 at 10:00 am

I am enjoying this year so much, I don’t see the predicability at all. The talent level is really high, and diverse. I guess they want more scandal. I always enjoy more talent and less scandal. If I want scandal or some dirt there are other venues for that. Idol is still a talent contest, and that is how it should be. My only beef is that they need to let them be freer in song choice so that you really know what they would do if they weren’t so restricted. Even within those confines some have managed to make moments and names for themselves with their choices.

I can’t decide how I feel about S7. I didn’t start watching until midway through S3 so in order of preference… S5, S4, S6, S7 (so far) and S3. I think maybe I’ve become a little jaded since I see now just how much TPTB manipulate things. I didn’t start paying really close attention to the inner workings of the show until the end of S5 and I can honestly say I’ve never picked up the phone to vote since Elliott was voted off (other than the Brandon votes I phoned in for PJ :) )
I watch for entertainment value now. I love talking about AI - especially with my friends here but, to be quite honest, I don’t think I care who wins - unless there’s money in it for me! lol I think I liked the show better when I was ignorant about it!

ETA: I used to think it was a talent contest but I dont really feel that way anymore. It’s calculated. Who gets to pick their songs first? Who gets the audition footage and face time prior to top 24? I just wish they would give everyone an equal playing field… oh well.

Season 7’s had it’s ups and downs. One week, I think think it’s could potentially rival Season 5 as the BEST SEASON EVAH!! and the next week, I’m longing for some of the Season 6 contestants.

I think this is the first time I’ve agreed with Michael Slezak’s Power List- with the exception of Syesha placing so high.

  6. 6 MN Sue Mar 25th, 2008 at 10:41 am

Hey, prime, I checked out Slezak’s Power List just to throw in a vote for Jason. When the percentages came up Syesha’s vote percentage wasn’t listed! I know its just a glitch, but, hell, it was good not seeing her name on the list.

I’m definitely not as invested in this season as I was with Season 5. But, I do enjoy a number of the contestants. I think they’re doing overkill with getting to know them. They also should not have started themes so early, nor should they have repeated the Beatles theme and by default, the 80’s. The results show is awful. Much too long and a lot of nonsense with the called in questions and all the junk with the judges. I’ve started recording it and fast forwarding through it the next morning. That way I don’t end up furious at wasting my time, but can still see how badly I fared in the pool. ;)

It’s a variety show - folks, nothing more nothing less. Pure entertainment with a reality show vibe. Like Dancing w/the Stars, musically entertaining. That they’ve made it a “contest” just adds to the intrigue.

I don’t have a favorite like I did years ago. I cannot bond with anyone this season nor did I bond with anyone last season. There hasn’t been that “WOW” moment yet. Chikezie and David came closest. I’m disappointed that the women aren’t kicking a**. Women normally blow the socks off of the men (excuse me KLC). I kind of think if Asia was still in it it would be more interesting. She had a “different” distinctive voice. but maybe a bit too young.
Anywho, it’s just a TV show.

    Who can win, who can’t?
    by Maureen Ryan
This Irish singer has powerful pipes, but is that all she has going for her? She can’t resist steamrolling her way through each performance, grabbing each and every song by the jugular in her quest to subdue it. She roars through power ballads like Godzilla raged through Tokyo: It’s more a rampage than a rendition. There’s no doubt that Smithson can deliver the difficult notes, but can she sing with emotion, subtlety and deftness? That remains to be seen.

I haven’t enjoyed Carly that much, so yesterday, I decided to give her a second chance by going back and listening to “Shadow of Your Smile” one of my all-time favorite songs. She hit all the notes “spot on” as Simon would say, but it seemed like she was screaming her way through the song.
Because they made a big fuss about comparing her to Kelly Clarkson (who I did NOT like when she came and sang that EMO song “Never Again”) I decided to listen to one of Kelly’s competition songs. Kelly actually SINGS. She makes MUSIC with her voice. Suddenly I realized, I really DON’T like Carly’s style at all. And when I read the above comments by Maureen Ryan, I knew EXACTLY what she meant… and I agree.
I even went and listened to Ann Wilson, and she’s not screaming either, so I don’t get the point with Carly screaming her way through every song.

Kristy and Britney – Apparently, other people have seen in Kristy something we have not. I hope tonight’s the night. It would be nice to see her shine.

canada.com blog – quotes Carly “I was very afraid to come and audition for the show,”

You know, I was really surprised to hear her say that. She comes across with a lot more confidence than that, but being a singer myself, and a “has-been-that-never-was,” I think I know what she means. The rejection does takes its toll.

    EW Top 10 Power List
I think they’ve got it a little mixed up.
I think David A. will be first.
David C. might be second, with Jason or Brooke in third, but it’s really anybody’s race.

As far as iTunes downloads go, David A. and David C. are definitely the top dogs – today. We’ll see how it goes after tonight.
Jason and Brooke have done well on iTunes, too, and I think it’s not only because of their style or the sound of their voice, but also the song choice has had an impact on downloads.
Of course, Imagine and Let It Be are going to be the most popular. They’re great, much-loved songs.

    I agree.
There was that one article that suggested the contestants should NOT have to start out with themes. It’s better for the contestants if they get to make their own musical statement early on. BUT I guess it’s not good for ratings, since Nigel went with themes to help improve ratings. Unfortunately, ratings trump everything else.

  12. 12 bean99 Mar 25th, 2008 at 11:47 am

I think having the Beatles’ week 2 was a mistake and could have hurt ratings. I heard that it was a mentor issue but you’d think they could have just opened it up to top 100 current songs or something like that. I agree with Ayla that it would be better to see what type of songs each idol would be doing later in the beginning before they give them the challenge to fit into a theme.

Abbysee–just finished catching up on Saturday’s posts. Could not agree with you more about our Taylor—I could just eat him up with a spoon! He really MOVED me in a way that no idol has since Kelly C. Glad to know you are (still) an ardent fan of our sweet Tay!

I’m anxious to see the Clarks Bros after hearing so many people rave about them here!

  16. 16 Ladybug Mar 25th, 2008 at 12:33 pm

Jumping on the bandwagon here. Lu, in view of your rankings, I think my order would be Season 5, 1, 2, 4, 7, 3, 6 (tho’ neither 6 nor 3 did much to keep me interested).

I don’t think Idol will allow anyone to grab that show by the throat and not let go like Taylor did, so I don’t expect it ever to achieve those heights S 5 brought, FOR ME.

I am waiting for a really big moment this year where everyone on the show delivers a knockout. Or at least the majority of them do. So far it has been one or two each week delivering enough punch to pull me out of my seat and pay close attention, but for the “best season ever, ever and ever”, it has yet to deliver a transcendent show.

  17. 17 MaryS-NJ Mar 25th, 2008 at 12:40 pm

Last season was the first season where the 12 finalists’ performances were recorded for iTunes sale. This is the first season where the top 24 performances were recorded for iTunes sale.

Frankly, I think the early themes were to make sure the kids picked songs for which 19 had the recording rights, as well as the performance rights. The PTB can give a pre-selected list (and even then it’s not a done deal, apparently). There are no guarantees if the kids pick songs they like and the PTB have to get all the rights cleared with very short notice.

    In Re: Carly -

…”Consistency didn’t count for much last week, though, as she found herself in the bottom three, in the first real shock result of the season…”

Well, McDonalds has a high level of consistency and while many people enjoy a Big Mac on occasion, very few would call it a culinary masterpiece.

    and

…”This Irish singer has powerful pipes, but is that all she has going for her? She can’t resist steamrolling her way through each performance, grabbing each and every song by the jugular in her quest to subdue it. I think this says it well. Carly’s controlled and seems “studied” as in “this is how I must sing in order to win American Idol”. She sings for effect but doesn’t seem very organic in her approach to singing as compared with someone like Jason or Brooke, neither of whom have as good voices (technically). With them I get the sense: “this is me - my style, and I’m feeling it”. Despite not being as consistent, both manage to have a higher fan appeal than Carly based on various anecdotal evidence.

Carly seems like she’s trying too hard to MAKE an impression. I have yet to feel anything when she sings except “that was technically proficient”.

    Danny & Ramie show

“…We became really close at the end of Hollywood week,” Danny said. “We have a lot in common. She’s my twin and I love her.”

Clearly, the feeling is mutual. When he got the boot three weeks ago, Ramie, as host Ryan Seacrest calls her, turned on the waterworks.

Seeing his BFF in tears, Danny also ended up weeping buckets.

Contestant Kady Malloy, voted off the same week as Danny, was also close to the Fil-Am finalist. “We’re the little ‘Charlie’s Angels’ of the group,” Danny said of their triumvirate. “We do the same things. We talk the same way. We all have ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder)…”

    Idol Meets the Beatles
Whitesnake’s adaptation of “Day Tripper,” the curse of the upbeat song, cooliosis, and other highlights you may have missed.

That’s a lot of Beatles songs. Don’t get me wrong, I was psyched when I heard that American Idol finally acquired the performing rights from Sony/ATV. But four hours, 23 solos, two medleys, and a Katharine McPhee/David Foster collaboration later, I’m ready to let the singers get back to their regular Idol fare. It wasn’t all bad—though it’s maybe not their thing. The Top 12 worked the hard-won Lennon-McCartney songbook two weeks ago in some innovative and fairly satisfactory ways. And then the producers couldn’t just “Let It Be,” so there was a second Beatles night last week (this time including songs by the Other Beatles!). Has this ever happened before—two successive weeks of the same theme? The answer is no, and now we know why…

What’s neat about Dolly Parton mentoring the contestants is that she’s really an awesomely nice person. I’m sure she’ll be encouraging, yet at the same time give them some pointers that will help. She has that southern diplomacy that is so charming. I’m sure they’ll find her down to earth and a pleasure to work with.

I checked the wiki on Dolly and they said she’s had 25 #1 hits, more than any other female country artist, and FORTY-TWO Top 10 Country albums - more than any other country artist - male or female.

I wonder who will do Coat of Many Colors - maybe Brooke. Her voice would be great for it.

Chrissey, I still love Taylor. He’s amazing.

My favorite season will always be season 2. I loved Trenyce and wonder why she was never signed. She was smart as well as talented, sometimes I guess that’s not enough. The battle between Clay and Ruben was epic. You can’t manufacture that. No season has had a battle with two equals slugging it out in the end. Usually it’s the likely winner and someone that got there by flying under the radar until everyone else is gone.

Season 5 was next, just because the talent was so deep. I mean the entire top 5 could have won and it not be a surprise. That almost everyone from that season (top 10)has a deal of some kind is not a surprise either.

The jury is out on this one.

My favorite season is always the one we’re in. I may have a favorite from most of the seasons but I wouldn’t want to relive them.

abbysee - I loved Trenyce too! Do you have any idea what she’s doing? I don’t remember seeing much about her at all and not for a long time.

Bobbi, Trenyce is still plodding away. Last year she was in Vegas doing some kind of a stage act. She’s done regional theater, she’s performed in Russia. She is working her butt off, but to no avail so far. I hope that someone watching Idol Rewind will see her and remember what a talented performer she was. I remember the tour during her season, while everyone was focused on Ruben and Clay, she got some of the best reviews. She’s still young, so I have hope.

Last night on the Sauce, which is on the Fuse channel, Amanda O. was on and interviewed. I only tuned in the last 5 min or so as I was surfing the channel. Its hosted by a top 24 Idol from a previous season. At the end of the program they showed Jordin’s No Air video with Chris B. I loved it!!! Great song, great video, they looked hot! I downloaded the audio off itunes and wish they had the video to download. This is the first time Ive heard it. I only heard Tattoo once and liked it also.

Tonights idol was a lot better then last week. I really liked MIchael and David C and Syesha.

Bucky and Carrie and Kellie P and Kelly C are all nominated for country awards on cmt. It will televise april 14. This is fan voted awards so you can go to their website and vote if you are a fan of any of them.

Thanks, abbysee! Do you keep track from My Space? I love the fact that she’s still working at it.

I don’t follow Dolly’s music much but I do know that Dolly had to cancel a bunch of shows recently for health reasons–one of my co-workers was pretty ticked about the Chicago cancellation. Dolly might be able to mentor but not yet able to perform.
