Idol Headlines for 8/25/08
Dis David Archuleta? You’re gonna pay, buddy
Our pop music critic, Sean Daly, has a seemingly cool job, right? Schmooze with celebs on the phone, go to concerts free, get all the new music he wants to listen to. Ahh. Bliss.
Uh, wrong.
Seems SD stands for Stupid Doofus, if his fan mail is any indication. After reviewing Smashing Pumpkins on Wednesday, then the American Idol Tour on Thursday, Sean finished his week with a treatise on free eating that sealed his fate as the most hated man in Tampa Bay. It was a veritable smorgasbord of vitriolic invective.
But is Sean worried? We’ll let his Pop Life blog entry from tampabay.com speak for itself:
Moms Have A à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Crushà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ On David Archuleta
So whoà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s helping the 17-year-old singer make such a splash?
à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Moms [are] saying, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹I love your song!à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ David revealed to Access Hollywoodà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹s Billy Bush in an interview for à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The Billy Bush Show.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬
à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“I really was not expecting the older audience to be able to relate to it, because I was like, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Oh, is à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Crushà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ too immature?à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ but I think the way the song talks about a crush, ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s in a mature way that all ages are able to relate to,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ he told Billy.

More Idol Headlines After the JUMP…
“American Idol’s” Syesha Mercado Talks About Life After “Idol”
Ft. Lauderdale, FL (CNS) – Syesha Mercado seems like the average 21-year-old girl – she likes Alicia Keyes and watches “South Park.”
Oh, except for one thing – she finished in third place earlier this year on “American Idol.” Mercado was the last female contestant left on the show before the competition narrowed down to David vs. David.
Now Mercado is touring with the rest of this year’s top 10 “Idol” finalists on the “American Idols LIVE! Tour 2008.” Before she sang at the BankAtlantic Center on Wednesday night, Mercado sat down with the Celebrity News Service and spoke about life since “Idol.”
Mercado says so far the tour, which began July 1, has been “excellent.”
“American Idol” Star Brooke White Discusses Tour And Fundraising Campaign
Ft. Lauderdale, FL (CNS) – While the “American Idol” judges did not love Brooke White’s performance of “Here Comes the Sun” earlier this year on the show, some might say that she brings sunshine into the room when she walks into it.
White was the fifth place finalist earlier this year on “Idol.” The petite, 25-year-old blonde gave memorable performances of songs like “You’re So Vain” and “Let It Be.”
She also charmed audiences with her quirky personality. On one episode of “Idol,” she revealed that she has never seen an R-rated movie.
“I still haven’t,” she tells the Celebrity News Service exclusively. “People think I’m so strange. It’s not a big deal.”
“American Idol” Star Jason Castro Talks New Album And “Idols” Tour
Ft. Lauderdale, FL (CNS) – Though Jason Castro’s weekly “American Idol” performances are now nothing more than a “Memory,” fans can expect to see more of the mellow singer in the coming months.
Castro finished fourth earlier this year on “Idol.” However he won over fans with his deep blue eyes, dreadlocks and unique covers of songs like “Hallelujah” and “Over the Rainbow.”
Some thought Castro gave off a Jack Johnson and John Mayer kind of vibe with his guitar-driven soft rock.
“Yeah, I think I fit in really good with those guys. They’re some of my big inspirations, too,” Castro tells Celebrity News Service exclusively.
American Idols Come to Fort Lauderdale
We were lucky enough to attend the American Idol Press Session today at the Bank Atlantic Center. We met David Cook, Syeesha, Ramielle, Jason Castro and Brooke White. They could not have been more gracious and humble! We gave David Cook a copy of an interview that Nicole did with Michael Johns back in 2003 to pass along.Videos to come ASAP.
West, Lopez, Daughtry among stars in Denver
DENVER (AP) à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Never mind those stinging “celebrity” ads, or the rebuttal by Paris Hilton. Musicians, artists and Hollywood types are descending on Denver à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ and so what if Barack Obama doesn’t need their star power?
He’ll get it anyway.
Of course, many of the most high-profile parties and concerts planned for the four-day Democratic Convention are ostensibly set apart from Team Obama.
Even fellow Chicagoan Kanye West’s performance Wednesday is for Bono’s nonpartisan ONE Campaign, which plans another concert à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ though with Chris Daughtry instead of West à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ on the sidelines of the Republican gathering in St. Paul, Minn.
Review: Daughtry brings it, but not all of it
ESSEX JUNCTION — There were moments at Chris Daughtry’s concert Sunday night at the Champlain Valley Fair where he demonstrated what a versatile performer he really is.
After a steady diet of emo-pop-rockers — the opener “Gone,” “What I Want” with its thrashing chorus, “Over You” with its classic slow build-up into a heavy sing-along chorus — his band members disappeared and he sat alone on stage with his guitar to play a new song, “Long Way.” The “American Idol” alumnus showed off his powerful, emotional voice, even tossing in a bit of Chris Isaak’s mysterious “Wicked Game” to demonstrate that he can wind his way impressively around something other than a hard-rocker.
Simon Cowell: All women over 40 should have plastic surgery
Simon Cowell would force surgery upon all mature women if he had his way.
The record producer is proud of his groomed look and believes women of a certain age should take as much pride in their appearance as he does.
à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d make it compulsory for every woman over 40 [to have plastic surgery],à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ he once quipped.
Back home and hopeful
Whether he’s swamping in Lloydminster or serenading the country, Earl Stevenson does it with a smile. A grin rarely left his face while he was passing through Edmonton on Friday morning, on route to his hometown of Lloydminster.
Even after advancing to the final four of Canadian Idol this week, he’d still enjoy jumping back on a backhoe any day.
“Everything’s fun, if you want it to be,” he said
And fun was certainly had Friday night during his performance at Lloydminster’s Exhibition Grounds, showcasing one of his own compositions, called Ghost. It’s a feat he’s unable to do on the show.
Idol artist
The road from “Canadian Idol winner” to “generic pop star” is quick, painless and oft travelled. But Theo Tams, one of four remaining contestants on the competitive reality show, says he’s determined to not take that exit.
“I had never intended to do the show, I did not want to do it,” the 23-year-old from Coaldale says, looking me in the eye. “I never wanted to lose my artistic integrity. I didn’t want to have to defend myself at every opportunity, having to say to people, ‘No, I’m not fabricated!’
Anne Murray mentors final four on ‘idol’
Canada’s “songbird” is finally flying over to the Canadian Idol set. Anne Murray was supposed to appear on last week’s show but a scheduling change bumped the guest spot to this week. In tonight’s episode, the iconic Nova Scotia-born singer mentors the Top 4 before they perform tunes from her legendary songbook.
Fantasia in Atlanta over the weekend
I caught a short set by Fantasia at the Atlanta Civic Center Saturday night.
She co-headlined with comic Rickey Smiley at the Atlanta Civic Center and proved what made her so appealing to a broad audience on TV. She looked and sounded much better than she did in the spring when she revisited à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and was a hot mess to the point Simon Cowell looked downright dumbfounded.
While sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d revert to à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“screechà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ mode on her vocals on occasion, the inspired, energetic Fantasia turned the center into her very own church, capped by a tour de force version of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Free Yourself.

Oh oh, maybe Lacey will have to dance a waltz to TOML. It’ll be the first time anybody ever stomped her way through a waltz.
I hear ya, dante. I was kinda WTF about the list when I first read it (except Lance Bass – he was always my fave guy in NSYNC. I always pick the gay ones lol), but when I found the People link, I got more excited.
ESPECIALLY when I saw that Maks is back. He is just effing HOT. :blush_tb: :wub_tb:
here is the Disney Interview:
(this one is from idf, I had issues with my recording haha)

(here is the song writing portion that she missed, I clipped this from mine. The only end part cut off is him saying yeah and mmm)

its a really great interview! He kinda talks and talks after each question.
So, “Dancing With the Stars” Starts in September…. Off topic posts spring up in two threads. Lots of chatter on the blog about it. Hm. I guess I should cover it this year? What do you guys think?
.
Of course, I’ve never watched it. I kinda hate the reality shows that feature washed up celebrities…but what the heck?
This guy thinks yes, please!
Oh yes, please do! I need something to tide me over until AI starts again!
For Cloris Leachman’s sake, yes!
lol, yes, do it for Cloris!
Hey, DWTS is *kinda* on topic. Look! DWTS – Lacey Schwimmer – SYTYCD – Nigel/19 – AI.
It all goes back to the stages of separation. LOL.
Nah, I’d love it if you covered it!! I didn’t watch much last season because Tuesdays had AI, DWTS, and Big Brother all at the same time, but since my hottie Maks is back this season (and he is my tv boyfriend, I claim him NOW!
), my eyes will be glued to my tv this season.
LOL. And Paula wants to be on it. So it’s on topic!
Why was this show on in the winter last year? Did it have to do with the writers strike?
“Hey, DWTS is *kinda* on topic. Look! DWTS – Lacey Schwimmer – SYTYCD – Nigel/19 – AI.
It all goes back to the stages of separation. LOL.
LOL. And Paula wants to be on it. So ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s on topic!”
And didn’t we read that Kellie Pickler wanted to be on DWTS!
I didn’t watch much last year as Kristi Yamaguchi was so much better than any other contestant and was getting 10’s about the second week……but I did watch the other seasons and plan on watching this year.
It would be kind of fun to follow it here and maybe even do the pool. So I vote yes for mj to cover it.
ETA: I suck at blockquote but I was trying to quote from earlier posts – sorry!
No, I think they usually do a fall and a spring season. I’ve only watched the full seasons of 4 & 5, though, so I’m not sure.
It’s a pretty fun show – the REAL host, Tom Bergeron, is one of the best live hosts there is. He’s cheesy at times, but can say some pretty hilarious things. Samantha Harris, the “other” host, is useless. LOL. And the judges can be pretty funny sometimes too. Talk about not making sense, meet Bruno Tonioli and his crazy analogies!
The only real “WTF” thing for me this season is Kim Kardashian being on the roster of stars. What, exactly, has she done to become a star? Make a sex tape?
Eep. Don’t think I can handle the spring season, except in the most rudimentary way, especially if it programs against Idol.
Wow, 2 a year? Isn’t that oversaturating the market a bit?
Yeah, you’d think two a year would be oversaturating, but people eat this stuff up LOL.
Here’s my fave dance that my hot tv boyfriend Maks has done on the show. It was the first Rumba he did with Mel B (of the Spice Girls) in season 5.
Actually, while Sean is indeed the music critic for the St. Pete Times, it’s distribution in Tampa is quite healthy. The St. Pete times is the largest newspaper in the Tampa Bay Area and it has the second largest distribution in the State of Florida (Miami is first). Traveling North, you’d get all the way to DC before you found a newspaper with a bigger circulation.
It far eclipses the Tampa Tribune in both circulation and industry awards. Anyplace in Tampa where the Tribune is for sale, you’ll also find the St. Pete Times. And, they sell a whole lot more of them throughout the area. That’s why when you see the Idols in downtown Tampa, you see them at the St. Pete Times Forum, because they actually had the money to buy the naming rights.
That’s not to say that Sean isn’t obnoxious often, because he is. He has liked some Idols in the past though. And, if you really want to see him get his hate on, you should read his old Taylor Hicks archives (or anyone who wasn’t Mandisa during Season 5 for that matter – Sean was bitter that year). He did however come around to Daughtry, ’cause Sean can sometimes be a bandwagon jumber LOL. His non-idol related music recommendations and concert reviews are usually quite good though.
So much to comment on today, and so little time. Maks is back? YAY. He’s the main reason to watch DWTS – hotness!! And, I worship Rocco. He’s got mad cooking skills, and his cookbook “Flavor” is about the best cookboock I’ve ever read. I could watch Rocco do cooking demonstrations all day long – he’s mesmerizing.
Count me in as another who really likes Tom B. as a host, enjoys the judges, and thinks Samantha’s interviews can only be endured on Fast Forward. Like SYTYCD, we get to see the rehearsals and the moments of joy and the discouragements and the bumps and bruises–which I wish we got to see on Idol.
So, obviously I wasn’t done…
I once rode in an elevator with him – he’s huge. And, for a very long time, he was a big football hero here in Buccaneer country. But, what we should all remember about Warren, is that he is the mother effin asshole who sent a body double to go take a paternity test for him. Each of the women he has had children with has had to routinely take him back to court for back child support, health benefits for the children, etc. And, at the top of his game, the guy was earning like six million dollars a year.
Warren’s talent on the field was pretty amazing. But, he’s a low grade human being. It disappoints me to see him on a show I like. And, I usually love the football guys. Bummer.
Completely offtopic but I feel compelled to respond regarding my statement of the that St Pete Times is not Tampa’s paper:
Here is the circulation by county:
Hillsborough (this is Tampa) – St Pete Times 32,500 (coverage = 7%)
– Tampa Tribune 144,000 (coverage = 31%)
St Pete has most of it’s distribution in Pinellas County – 190,000 for a 44% coverage and yes has a greater circulation than the Tribune. My point was St Pete is NOT Tampa’s paper. It’s a Pinellas county paper.
These stats are as of July 2008

If you cover it and do the pool MJ, maybe I will watch the show in it’s entirely, something I’ve never done. Might be something else to tide us over…..
The comment section in the Fantasia article reminds me again to never call out any one fanbase for ‘enthusiasm/fanaticism’.
Just in case it hasn’t been posted yet…Jasonnn’s official website is now up and running.
http://www.jasoncastromusic.com/
That’s all good. But my point was that in the Tampa Bay Area, more people read it. And, when attending a concert at the Forum, you’ll find people representing each of the six counties in the greater Tampa metro area.
Actually, my bottom line point is a fan-base warning. Don’t attack Sean Daly in his comments section. There is no doubt you will be made fun of by a) his loyal readers who comment on there every day – I swear the guy has a fan club; b)TBO will write an online article about your fanatacism; c) you may end up being made fun of in a print article in the second largest newspaper in FL. The fans cannot win in these situations.
Thrilled to hear you’ll be covering DWTS, mj! It is a fun show for all the reasons already enumerated.
I am so happy Maks is back! The show wasn’t half as good without him. I still think he and Mel was robbed!
