Idol Headlines for 9/10/08

The Ralphie Report

“It” is the singer’s new song, “Crush.” The single made the highest Billboard Hot 100 debut in 18 months, losing out to only Rihanna’s “Disturbia” for the top spot. Archuleta’s forthcoming LP is tentatively self-titled and slated for a November release.

Could Archuleta be the next Clay Aiken — a runner-up, small in stature, large in vocals — outshining the season’s winner? He hasn’t reached out to Aiken for any advice, instead leaning on someone a little more relatable in current career path and age — last year’s winner and Jive label-mate Jordin Sparks.

But, don’t count out Cook yet. A source close to the singer revealed exclusively to me that three tracks were mixed down in studio for the rocker this week, all with the potential to be a radio single heard before the end of the month.

Jordin Sparks “doesn’t regret” promise ring outburst at VMAs

Katy Perry may have covered “Like A Virgin” at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards, but Jordin Sparks was living it — loudly. Attending the show for the first time, the American Idol winner went off-script after being agitated by host Russell Brand’s repeated mocking of the Jonas Brothers’ promise rings. “It’s something I feel strongly about,” she tells EW.com. “I wish I would’ve worded it differently — that somebody who doesn’t wear a promise ring isn’t necessarily a slut — but I can’t take it back now. It was a split-second thing, and it came out kind of wrong. Still, I don’t regret it.”

Idols But Not Originals Review

Most of the Idols have good voices and attempted to make the songs their own, but some of the arrangements were so close to the originals as to raise the question, “Why bother?”

Michael Johns, for example, did by-the-book versions of Queen’s “We Will Rock You” and “We Are The Champions,” before redeeming himself with a slow, bluesy take on Dolly Parton’s “It’s All Wrong But It’s All Right.” He followed that up with Aerosmith’s “Dream On,” which he noted was the song that got him kicked off “American Idol.”

David Archuleta Has a Crush…on Someone

When I was a teen and beginning to question my sexuality it was hard to come to terms with the fact that I had crushes on the boys around me rather than the girls. I remember asking myself, ‘why do I keep running from the truth?’

Interesting then, that the video for David Archuleta’s new single Crush tracks Archuleta’s attention on the boys almost as often as the girls. Others have noticed as well. And if Archuleta is playing to a bigger audience than the female teen/tween crowd, kudos to him.

Tickets Available For Sunday’s Chiefs Game

The Raiders returned a portion of their ticket allotment to the Chiefs on Tuesday, according to the news release.

In addition to witnessing “the 99th installment of the Chiefs-Raiders rivalry,” fans will see Blue Springs, Mo., native and “American Idol” champion David Cook and his brother, Andrew Cook, perform the National Anthem prior to the game.

Russell Brand/ Jonas Brothers VMA Flap Spurs Abstinence Group’s Leader To Send Purity Ring to Palin’s Daughter

Russell Brand might be the best thing to ever happen to purity rings.

Though the British comedian was roundly flamed by Jonas Brothers fans for relentlessly mocking the boys’ abstinence symbols during Sunday night’s VMAs, the ribbing might actually be a blessing in disguise for the movement.

No (hot) air

Is it just me, or did anyone else find Jordin Sparks’ VMA comments about purity ring showboating just a weenzy bit offensive?

Now, it’s not the defense of the purity rings part that annoys me. It’s more of the “hey, if you don’t save yourself for marriage, like me and the Disney Channel chastity brigade, you’re a total slut and deserve to be spit on” part.

“We’re finding our beat and our rhythm and it’s going to kick in really well I think in the third city, because that’s really where the talent starts coming together,” Abdul said.

NYTVF Will Screen “Teachers” Pilot Starring Reinders, Maroulis and Litzsinger

Kate Reinders, Constantine Maroulis and Sarah Litzsinger star in the independent pilot “Teachers,” which will be presented as part of the fourth annual New York Television Festival.

In “Teachers,” Noah Starr – who appears as the tech-guru on Food Network’s “Ask Aida” – is cast as Tim Donnely, a young teacher fresh out of college. However, press notes state, “he’s in for a rude awakening when he butts heads with jaded educators and a professional teacher-coach sent to retool the faculty. Throw in a celebrity music teacher and a search for a new principal, and you’ve got the first episode of ‘Teachers.’ Everyone has been to school; everyone has had teachers. We are now proud to lift the veil and reveal the true colors of American academia from the teachers’ perspective.”

“Teachers” will be screened Sept. 13 at 5 PM and Sept. 17 at 3:45 PM.

Children of Men Meet Hollywood’s hottest new accessory: the gaybie

Tom Ford wardrobes, Fire Island homes, and Le Corbusier chaises have long been coveted power gay accessories, but now celebrities like Clay Aiken and Ricky Martin are flaunting a new, even more exclusive essential: the gaybie.

Yes, the gaybie. A baby gayness hath wrought. Found sashaying down the uteri of surrogate mothers worldwide, providing self-actualization and status-faction to Hollywood’s single fathers. ‘American Idol’ finalist McPhee’s in ‘The House’

HOLLYWOOD - On a hot summer afternoon in Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley, “American Idol” finalist Katharine McPhee talks about her recent switch from singing to acting and boils down her role in “The House Bunny,” now playing in theaters, to two words: preggie suit.

“That’s what they call it,” she says, laughing at the memory of playing Harmony, a very pregnant hippie throwback who totes around a tub of peanut butter, spoon at the ready, and wears flower-child dresses.

There’s no turning back now, Canada.

The votes are in, and this year’s Canadian Idol — be it Port Hood, Nova Scotia’s Mitch MacDonald or Lethbridge, Alberta’s Theo Tams — has already been determined.

Of course, we won’t know who has won rights to the sixth karaoke crown until tonight, when the CTV competition comes to a rousing finish.

After nearly two hours of performances, season recaps, and forced banter between host Ben Mulroney and judges Farley Flex, Sass Jordan, Zack Werner and Jake Gold, the moment you have been waiting for all summer will arrive.

Even the judges are weary of Canadian Idol ‘talent’

Never mind the grating host, irrelevant mentors, lacklustre talent and ingratiating Pantene commercials disguised as creative content — when the judges start dissing the inaugural singles written for winners on Canadian Idol (8 p.m. on CTV), you know the writing is on the wall.

“Song-wise, neither of ‘em were my favourites!” an unimpressed Jake Gold told Alberta’s Theo Tams and Nova Scotia’s Mitch MacDonald on Monday’s east-versus-west pre-finale duke-out.

“But, y’know, you’ll probably get a lot of airplay if you win.”

Yeah, that’s all I got out of all those articles too:

David Cook single? Before the end of the month?

Who can I beat up to get a sneak peek! *aahhhh I can’t stand it!*

  4. 4 gingerly Sep 10th, 2008 at 10:47 am

The Ralphie Report’s accompanying picture mentions the top 10…where’s Chikezie?

I’m trying not to hope too hard for a single before the end of the month…don’t want to have to commit suicide.

David Cook single? Before the end of the month?

    I think I read that wrong. :laugh_tb:

Since he’s traditionally been like a fort with such news, I’m holding out hope for that single. If not, oh well. November’s just around the corner.

  6. 6 BootStar Sep 10th, 2008 at 11:12 am

MJ, I hope it’s okay to post this here, but I don’t believe I saw this posted anywhere. I was just on iTunes and noticed that yesterday (9/9) iTunes released an “iTunes Essentials” compilation/album called “Rising Stars: Pop.” David Cook made it into the top-tier (”The Basics” level) at no. 15. Very cool.

iTunes Essentials> Genres & History> Rising Stars: Pop

    The Basics

    1. Realize - Colbie Caillat
    2. Shake It - Metro Station
    3. New Soul - Yael Naim
    4. Stop and Stare - OneRepublic
    5. Bleeding Love - Leona Lewis
    6. Burnin’ Up - Jonas Brothers
    7. Love Song - Sara Bareilles
    8. I Kissed A Girl - Katy Perry
    9. Pocketful of Sunshine - Natasha Beddingfield
    10. 7 Things - Miley Cyrus
    11. Mercy - Duffy
    12. Chasing Pavements - ADELE
    13. No Air - Jordin Sparks & Chris Brown
    14. Shut Up and Let Me Go - The Ting Tings
    15. The Time of My Life - David Cook

The “Complete Set” includes 45 songs; David and Jordin are the only Idols I noticed included in the set.

A source close to the singer revealed exclusively to me that three tracks were mixed down in studio for the rocker this week, all with the potential to be a radio single heard before the end of the month.

I was skeptic about the single rumors earlier, but this quote, combined with the newsletter application which popped up on his MySpace (”Do you want to be the first to know the name of the new single”), Plus his new Facebook…. Something is brewing here.
I’m not holding my breath, but I do think we’ll at least get a name and release date within the next week. I won’t be surprised if we hear the single within the month and it goes on sale during October.

  8. 8 EmmaJK Sep 10th, 2008 at 11:33 am

with the potential to be a radio single heard before the end of the month.

Arghh! I can’t seem to focus beyond this quote. I’m starting to feel like I did on Mon/Tues during the season before the performance show. That little knot of nervous anticipation in my stomach. I fear I may ‘plode soon.

    Boot Star thats cool!

I was poking through the back-to-school page and seems Crush is in the Teen Pop set of songs for itunes essentials.

  10. 10 Trina Sep 10th, 2008 at 11:50 am

I wasn’t skeptic at all. David said several weeks ago they were going to shoot for a single the end of September so that tells me they had a September release planned for a while. At the Saturday afterparty he told someone we would have information on the single within two weeks, now the Ralphie Report blurb combined with the new promo pictures popping up,the MySpace graphic, the new Facebook..yeah something is definitely happening soon. In all my years following various Idols I’ve learned to be patient. Just because every piece of info isn’t in front of you doesn’t mean stuff isn’t happening behind the scenes. One of the magazines last week said the Skechers campaign is launching this month so I wouldn’t be too surprised to see the single launched around the same time.

  11. 11 CRB Sep 10th, 2008 at 11:58 am

Poor Jordin, put her oversized foot in her mouth.

  12. 12 Jolene Sep 10th, 2008 at 12:06 pm

Speaking of Dave’s new single, can I put a request to have this picture as the cover? Because dayum.
Oh, who am I kidding. You just know from 19’s track record that they’ll pick the worst picture ever.

I don’t doubt things are happening even if we don’t know about them - that was almost signature for Cook during the season, that his were always the last spoilers revealed. He keeps things close to the vest, but I don’t doubt he’s thinking about everything and has plans that go far into the future.

One of the magazines last week said the Skechers campaign is launching this month so I wouldn’t be too surprised to see the single launched around the same time.

I’m not sure about this, but someone over on TWoP said she asked at a local Skechers store, and was told the campaign starts September 15th. Guess we’ll wait and see, but didn’t the original press release have something about November in it?

  13. 13 Duke Sep 10th, 2008 at 12:15 pm

i think its completely eff’d up how reporters can make such rediculous statement regarding archie’s sexuality from a 3 minute video…leave the kid alone. it just seems like there is no need for that.

ps. i tried out for StarMaker yesterday(a new p-diddy reality show they are casting for for MTV) in Atlanta, and the Britnam Twins from S5 were there. They seemed nice enough, kinda thought they were big deals. But for those of you who remember how they were disqualified for identity theft of some sort when purchasing a car, you might find this funny- they had a piece of cardboard over their tag plate that said LICENSE APPLIED FOR….omg, i was cracking up. i took a pic with my camera phone. anyways, the guy i met at Idol auditions in jacksonville (the won who told me about star maker) i ended up running into him. he actually made it through the 1st round but not the 2nd. he said the 2nd round is done by some chick and a guy (Ken still?). he said he sang for 30 seconds and was told quickly he wasnt what they were looking for…he said it was almost as if they made up their mind beforehand.

but, im an idol geek and i love to read stupid stories like these from other ppl so i thought id share.

id figure id mention him since he made it past round 1…here is his myspace if you wanna check him out: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=30337651

Guess we’ll wait and see, but didn’t the original press release have something about November in it?

No, not specifically. Here’s the press release

Launching in Fall ‘08, the campaign coincides with the “PopTarts American Idols Live! Tour 2008,” and the debut of David’s first post-Idol album on 19 Recordings/RCA Records. The SKECHERS Cook campaign will include print, outdoor and in-store.

I think it was last weeks Life & Style that said it was launching this month.

  16. 16 Hazehel Sep 10th, 2008 at 3:19 pm

About Jordin comment about slut, I wonder what she would have made of the jokes Russel Brand didn’t tell (apparently they got vetoed by MTV) -

He said: “I had John McCain gags pulled. And they asked me to tone down the gags about Sarah Palin. I wanted to say she was forcing her teenage daughter to have a baby because she is so anti-abortion.

“But also, as a Republican she is pro-execution so she is going to give her the electric chair for being a little slut.

Ha, I missed Jordin’s clarification when I posted earlier:

“I wish I would’ve worded it differently – that somebody who doesn’t wear a promise ring isn’t necessarily a slut – but I can’t take it back now,”

LOL! Aw, thanks, Jordin! Seriously, a whole day to think about her comment and that’s the least judgemental thing she could come up with?

  19. 19 elisad Sep 10th, 2008 at 5:12 pm

    LOL.

Jonas Bros. handled this really well, I have to say.

Nick said, “For us it’s cool to see that he recognises we are gentleman.”

He even went on to compliment Brand, adding, “I think he did a good job. We saw him on Conan O’Brien and thought he was hilarious.”

Kevin says that the Brit comic didn’t ‘ruin’ their night in the slightest: “We had a lot of friends there and everybody’s so nice. We had a good time.”

  20. 20 Layla Sep 10th, 2008 at 5:23 pm

Just sayin… :smoke_tb: Jordin has been somewhat called out for being judgmental in her views regarding “purity” et al, while reports of fans throwing underwear on stage at a family themed tour, umbrellas and signs with sexual references are on prominent display on posts and in blogs, implicit and explicit sexual references about our fave performers make regular appearances in posts…. and we laugh and tend to accept it and make allowances…. her POV is her POV, and she exercised her right to express it… could her expression of the POV have been done w/more tact? Perhaps… I’ll cut her some slack do to her youth and her lack of experience in the PR game… no harm, no foul in my book. I think she is a good role model and projects a positive image for other young women of color that runs counter to the sometimes negative and more sexually charged and salacious ones that have been perpetrated in the industry - KOKO Miss J…. you’re “Fresh Air” :wink1_tb:

Just thought you folk’s would like to know that Kat’s movie, The House Bunny, continues to out-perform expectations. Even in it’s third week of release it is still well into the Top 10 top at #6 in yesterday’s box office reports.

    6 (7) The House Bunny Sony Pictures Comedy $345,613 20.46% 2,736 $126 $37,242,187 19

    From Box Office Prophets:

The best news in the top ten this week belongs to Anna Faris and The House Bunny. The $25 million production was never anticipated to be a strong performer, but it is showing similar staying power to a couple of spring 2008 comedies, What Happens in Vegas and Baby Mama. The title has the lowest decline among top ten titles, dropping a measly 29% to $5.9 million. With a running total of just under $37 million, it’s already a winner for Sony. Given the lackluster September slate, this sleeper could wind up sneaking its way north of $50 million, perhaps even approaching $60 million. For a $14.5 million opener with such a svelte budget, this is a remarkable accomplishment.

Great news for Kat. The House Bunny is turning out to be a sleeper hit film and has proven to be a perfect first choice film for Katharine!! Great news!
