‘Amazing Race’ beats ‘Idol,’ wins 6th Emmy

The CBS show has won every year since the reality category was created and it doesn’t aim to bow out any time soon.

Award shows are routinely derided as nothing more than popularity contests. That cannot be said about the Emmy winner for outstanding reality competition, which — yet again — went to CBS’ “The Amazing Race.”

The race-around-the-globe reality series, while certainly respectable in the ratings, is no match for much of its reality show competitors, most notably, Fox’s ” American Idol” — television’s most popular show (not to mention ABC’s ” Dancing With the Stars”).

Show that celebrates TV is itself a crashing bore

For a TV show that celebrates how fantastic television is, the Emmys sure manage to be an exceptionally boring TV show, even when they make history on their 60th anniversary.

Not even the presence of the five nominated reality TV show hosts could liven up the broadcast. In fact, after being introduced by Oprah, the five emcees sent the Emmys down the path of lameness with an opening that was later mocked by Jeremy Piven during his acceptance speech and by Don Rickles when he was presenting an award. That’s because the hosts literally did nothing except talk about how they had nothing prepared.

Carrie Underwood Question Brings Rant From Jessica Simpson Hairdresser

Did a question about Carrie Underwood bring an expletive laden rant from Jessica Simpson hairdresser Ken Paves? The National Enquirer reports this week that very scenario this week and adds, “If you mess with Jessica Simpson, you’ll have to answer to her hairdresser.” Look out Carrie Underwood.

According to the Enquirer, one fan learned what happens recently when the “Dukes of Hazzard” star bristled after being asked about her archenemy, Carrie Underwood. After Jess stormed away, her furious hairdresser grabbed the fan and spewed a hair-curling stream of obscenities at him.

Carrie Underwood a perfect fit for Puyallup Fair

Carrie Underwood was in her element at the Puyallup Fair.

The “All-American Girl,” to borrow one of her song titles, offers ideal country-fair fare. It’s strong on faith-based narratives, notably “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” and small-town values; an Okie from Muskogee, the singer was raised in nearby Checotah, Okla., population 3,500.

Underwood even named her current CD, her second, “Carnival Ride.” And Friday night, the Puyallup Fair carnival ride her 80-minute concert most resembled might have been the Extreme Scream.

Fresh thoughts on new music

It has been two years since moviegoers watched Jennifer Hudson bring down the house in “Dreamgirls,” more than four since “American Idol” viewers watched her sweep into the finals.

In the supersonic world of popular music, that’s a long time without an album — most “Idol” discs are rush-released to ride the momentum. But firing up quickly can also mean flaming out fast, and with the long-awaited “Jennifer Hudson” (Arista Records, THREE STARS out of four stars Sept. 30), the 27-year-old singer is aiming for something a little more enduring.

Kellie Pickler Talks About Boyfriend, Fans and Country Music

I got the skinny from Kellie Pickler. First off, she is set to ring in 2009 in New York City with Dick Clark and Ryan Seacrest, and is she excited! And she says she has a boyfriend — songwriter Kyle Jacobs, a Minnesota native.

“He’s really a great guy, but no sound of wedding bells.” she laughed. “We wrote two songs for my self-titled album coming out Sept. 30. I co-wrote five of the songs. This album is so me. I was involved totally — start to finish. My first album was done in such a hurry after American Idol, but we took time with this one.” Her new producer is Chris Lindsey.

Idol Chartwatch, September 22: Good Week for à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Daughtryà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢

Chris Daughtryà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s debut album has been on the charts since its release nearly two years ago, but last week, sales got a boost with the release of the enhanced, two-disk version of Daughtry. Billboard has bundled sales of the new album with the earlier release for charting purposes, and as a result, Daughtry jumped from #79 to #36 on the Billboard 200, reflecting sales of over 13,000 units, nearly double its sales for the previous week.

Daughtry reentered the Top Rock Albums chart at #12, and is #7 on Top Hard Rock Albums and #8 on Top Modern Rock/Alternative Albums.

They have to step it up on ‘Dancing With the Stars’

As “Dancing With the Stars” launches its seventh season tonight (8, ABC/7), the mandate from the network and producers is change – for fans and contestants. Here’s what you’ll need to know:

MORE SHOW. There will be five full hours over three nights of “DWTS” this week, the most ever for launch week. There’s an intriguing method to this dance madness. Top boss Conrad Green is tossing the contestants right into the fire, which means they’ll need to develop their footwork quickly, or else. Moreover, there will be two couple eliminations this week (a first). Viewers will have to be instantly engaged as well. “In the past,” says Green, contestants have “always been able to do a bit of work [before] their second and third dances.”

The So You Think You Can Dance? S4 tour kicked off in Washington last night. This is the first year Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll be going to see this show (on Oct. 5th) so I was pretty anxious to see what they had in store. Set list first, my griping later

We now have the lyrics to “Light On” from the official site HERE.

  • Interesting lyrics. Poignant…reflective. I’d love to hear those words put to music. What will it be? Rock, rock ballad…?

Comments on Katharine McPhee with Chris Botti and The Boston Pops friday night.

I could not have planned a more perfect night for a McPhan. To finally see Katharine live, and to see her with the Boston Pops in Symphony Hall is more than I could have hoped for. But getting to meet her and Nick afterwards though briefly was simply a perfect ending to a perfect evening. Those who have met her know just how incredibly beautiful she is in person. Words truly can not describe it.

Chris Botti said Katharine is “destined for super-stardom”. With this line up of A-List performers she fit right in. And what was so great is that it was Jazzy Kat, flirtacious Kat, funny Kat, the Kat I fell in love with I finally got to see. This genre is where she is in a league of her own. Though it was only one song, it was perfection.

As far as Kat’s performance and arrangement of I’ve Got You Under My Skin, it was Sinatra’s version. It was uptempo, sultry, jazzy, sexy and funny. Chris started with a little thing about his guitar player having a crush on Kat that everyone has but he needed to stay away from her. All the while the basic riff kept repeating by the Pops. But when she came out and sang it was simply amazing. She was playful, flirty, did a little dance move, strolled around the stage playing the whole thing up while Mark Whitten tried to sneak center stage to do a guitar solo and get near Kat. She was so at home with that band and orchestra. And everyone loved it. The comments I heard in the audience during and after the show were all things like “I didn’t know she was that good till I heard her live”.

After she was done, Chris introduced Yo-Yo Ma and there was no disconnect. No one felt like that was an unnatural jump of performers. She belonged on that stage with these folks in this audience’s mind.

Finally and what is so great is that even beyond seeing Katharine, this was an incredible show. I would absolutely recommend any music lover to buy this CD/DVD when it is released in December and March. This was A-List entertainment. True musical artistry and Katharine fit in flawlessly.

It was a very special evening for me. One I will get to re-live when the CD/DVD is released.

BTW Anna Faris is scheduled to be the Guest host on SNL this week which should give The House Bunny another boost. It was #10 this weekend and is now at $45.724 Million dollars. It is headed easily over 50 million and approaching 60 mil in domestic gross alone. It’s first international release is Australia and New Zealand on thursday.

Thanks for the recap, uplink2. It was a nice read. I know how much you love Kat so I’m happy that the night turned out so great for her and for you. Also great that you got to see Kat perform live and to speak with her.

From HDD with about 36% of the info in:

    39 KRISTY LEE COOK ARISTA/SBMG NASHVILLE 4,726
    WHY WAIT

    That’s more than I thought she’d sell already. :)
I think she’ll do better than Phil from S6 but I can’t remember what his first week’s album sales were.
Blondes in country are really in.

    39 KRISTY LEE COOK ARISTA/SBMG NASHVILLE 4,726

Those are her sales so far as the different merchants report their numbers to HDD.

Here are Phil’s first week numbers:

    43 Phil Stacey à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Phil Staceyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ 13,135 (NEW; lw 20) Total: 13,086 (NEW)

  • Pam:

Are you sure thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s correct? Only 4,726 in sales and she charts at 39 on the BB 200?

I’m looking at the page now and that’s exactly what I’m seeing.

  • uplink2:

The chart is with only 36% reported in so far. That will definitely go up when it finishes on tuesday.

  • Kirsten:

Different stores report at different times. Walmart is one of the earlier reporters and they do a brisk business in Country music. Therefore, Country artists tend to do well in the 20-40% of HDD reports (Barnes and Nobles is one of the first reporters and you’ll often see classical music or something doing well on HDD during the early percents).

Tomorrow, the Urban markets start reporting and typically the R&B/Rap numbers go up (so don’t count those artists out if they are low on the first day). Kristy could maintain her ranking, but if it does drop, this might be part of the explanation.

If her first week is in the 15K range will she have the lowest first week sales of anyone signed by 19? It’s too early to call but her numbers look in the Phil ballpark so far (but he was signed by a smaller label.)
