Idol Headlines for 9/29/08

Jennifer Hudson’s ‘Idol’ prediction is still coming true

Jennifer Hudson doesn’t like to say, “I told you so,” but she told you so.

More than four years ago, when the then-unknown singer finished seventh on Season 3 of American Idol, she delivered an “exit speech. I said, ‘I don’t know when or where or how, but God has something in store for me.’ I think the judges or producers kind of laughed.”

‘Idol’s’ Kellie Pickler fills CD with songs from the heart

Kellie Pickler

Teamed with new producer Chris Lindsey and with more time to create than she did in the rush following her run on “American Idol,” Kellie Pickler’s second album is another solid step toward country stardom. She recently told Billboard that when it comes to her songwriting, “It’s like you’re reading one of my journals,” and that certainly comes across on the set, which is laden with relationship ups and (mostly) downs.

Big deal? Yes, coming out is still no easy decision

‘So Clay Aiken is gay … what’s the big deal?”

When news of the Raleigh resident’s coming-out to People magazine surfaced last week, some people — regardless of their orientation — reacted with that question.

It’s easy in the “Ellen”/”Brokeback Mountain”/”I Kissed a Girl” 21st century to think of an “American Idol” runner-up’s announcement as no big thing and move on. But that presumes we as a society have moved to the point where being honest about your sexual orientation has no repercussions, where it doesn’t matter. And though one could argue it shouldn’t, there’s too much evidence to argue the point with … ahem … a straight face:

Prime-Time Ratings Keep Angst at Bay

That’s the bottom line from the first few days of the 2008-09 television season, which got under way last week amidst a higher-than-normal level of angst among network suits. With so many shows taking nine-month hiatuses due to the writers strike, and fewer newcomers than normal, there had been fears that the new season would land with a thud.

That didn’t happen. In fact, the first Monday of the season saw the Big Five networks actually attract about 1.3 million more viewers than the previous year’s opener.

The fall season gets off to a solid start, with new and returning shows enjoying ratings gains; NBC stumbles a bit

If anything, the first four days of the official start of the 2008-09 broadcast prime-time season has affirmed one basic truth: When the networks produce programming viewers like, they will draw a big audience.

The first two nights of ABC’s Dancing With the Stars drew almost the same number of viewers—21.3 million on Sept. 22 and 18.3 million on Sept. 23—as the show earned last season, according to Nielsen Media Research data.

Kim Karashian: Why I Am Doing Dancing With The Stars

Kim Kardashian is doing Dancing With The Stars because she wants to challenge herself and it is a once in a lifetime opportunity. She also plans on using the strict regime of the routines to tone up her body and shake her fear of dancing in public.

Kim told OK magazine, “I’m the girl who’s too shy to dance in a nightclub — maybe for one song, and then that’s it.”

So You Think You Can Dance kicked off its live concert tour on September 20th in Tacoma, Washington. The Top 10 finalists from season four, plus three special guests (also from season four), are hitting over 40 cities across America. The tour concludes November 17th in Tampa, Florida.

In addition to attending the opening performance of the tour, I also had the opportunity to meet with five of the thirteen dancers. Season four winner Joshua Allen, as well as Katee Shean, Mark Kanemura, Chelsea Traille, and Jessica King (who dropped out of the competition mid-season due to broken ribs) chatted with me about the show and the tour. Only a few hours later they would take the stage in front of a sold-out Tacoma Dome audience.

‘Dance’ sweeps O.C. off its feet

I was in the Honda Center for the Ducks’ Stanley Cup run, and this crowd was louder. The place was jammed to the nosebleed seats, and the audience screamed as one.

What was making the rafters shake last Saturday night? A middle-aged Brit with a ’70s haircut, beaming at us from a large video screen.

Not Paul McCartney. Bigger. It was Nigel Lythgoe, the mastermind behind “So You Think You Can Dance,” telling us about the trials and tribulations of Season Four.

Good for Jennifer Hudson! I’m hoping deep down inside that Taylor Hicks will also get that opportunity to tell the producers and judges, “I told you so”! That would truly be sweet!

American Idol 2008 David Cook Live Concert in Manila

    Aha! Nice (if true)…

On another David and the Pinoys

…American Idol Season 7 finalist David Hernandez opened the afternoon concert and it was enough to silence the crowd, some of whom went totally gaga when the sexy singer took of(f) his shirt and revealed his man-chops.

“It was incredible. They are one of the most welcoming crowds I’ve ever performed for,” David said during a short chat. The upcoming singer drove all the way from Phoenix, Arizona with his manager just for the weekend show. He sang two songs and later walked the fan line to sign autographs and pose for pictures.

David, who said he would love to perform in the Philippines, also shared what he likes most in Filipino girls. “Their lips,” he says. “It’s so full!”

I’m just checking in from the studio but if you’re wondering if I’ve been able to do anything else this last week besides working on the album, I was able to go to the Journey with Heart and Cheap Trick concert last night!! Woo Hoo! haha. The sad thing was I missed Cheap Trick and part of Heart because I was recording :( ….

…… I definitley wanted to take a minute to thank everyone again for your support. I can’t believe how well “Crush” is doing and I’m so happy that you all like it. Everyone has been so supportive, from the reaction to the song and video to the comments and voicemail messages I’m getting. I’m working really hard on this album and hope everyone loves it!

    Where do I begin…

Well it was two weeks ago today that I was sitting on an airplane that departed from Tulsa, Oklahoma, anxiously looking out of the window as we flew over Laurel Canyon just moments before landing in Burbank, California. As we touched down on the runway I could hardly believe it was true. Could I really be home?!? I walked down the steps from the plane into the warm California sunshine and just as a nice breeze passed by and blew my hair around… I through my hands in the air let out a big “YAY!!!!” No words could describe my happiness at the moment… kind of like Christmas Morning… Kind of like walking down Main street at Disneyland with a churro in hand… Kind of like eating Eggs Benedict on my birthday kind of happiness. Maybe this means nothing to you, but basically I’m trying to say it was indeed very joyful… as well as I walked to baggage claim to see Dave just smiling there in his church clothes all ready to pick me up and take me home. I rolled down the windows in the car and turned up the radio… amazing!

Oh Brooke, you are too sweet - glad she is so happy. David A, I think it is awesome that Journey is still pulling in new fans, young and old. Per David A:

“Journey was incredible too!! I was able to go backstage and meet them during the intermission after Heart’s set, and I have to admit I was nervous because I felt like I was just bugging them and invading their space haha. But they were waaay nice. They have the new singer Arnel Pineda, and I can’t believe how amazing he can sing. He’s Filipino, and blew me out of the water! “

I apologize but this is only my third post or so. and I wasn’t sure where I should put this. I was wondering how you find a previous post by a particular poster? Is that possible? I was looking for the post by Kristen that included the Bob Marley shot the sheriff stuff.> If there’s a search for poster can some one help me out? I ran back several days but I don’t think I was hitting the right “article”. Well, duh, obviously, as I didn’t find it.:-)

    Thanks..
