Everybody but Elliott sells less and he sells more downloads than Jordin’s coronation song. Mmm
Whoa. Those are big drops for Jordin and Blake.
I can’t believe the numbers that Daughtry continues to pull in — amazing!
Jordin and Blake, what really is at the root of the decline in veiwership and album sales?
I don’t know about viewership but I paid $225 a ticket to see the idols in the meadowlands on 8/28 (on a bid auction) and that was for 10th row center. The front rows were going for $290 a ticket PLUS they had to add another show…so go figure..
I don’t know if the download #s that Blake and Jordin are getting are indicative of the decline of AI. Having the studio mp3s for sale during the show and putting out so many songs at iTunes may skew things a bit. I didn’t buy any of Blake’s songs on iTunes because I bought most of them on the AI site. I know as a good fan I should have but I’m waiting for his album now.
The Meadowlands and the Nassau Coliseum always draws great crowds (except for season 3).
I really listened to Daughtry’s “Home”, and decided it’s a good song, much better than “It’s Not Over”.
Good for Elliott, esp. since he was passed over.
I read someplace that an artist reaches gold status for digital singles at 100,000. I read in another place that that was changed to 500,000. Does anyone know which is correct? I checked Google but did not find a definite answer. I found info to support both amounts. Does anyone have any links to recent info with the definite answer? Thanks.
You will still find articles written to this day that say 100K for digital download gold, but the RIAA changed it’s rules in June of 2006 to require 500K downloads.
Here is their criteria page:
http://www.riaa.com/gp/certification/criteria.asp
The original 100K criteria was set when downloads weren’t as popular. By 2006, it was not uncommon for many digital singles to go gold or platinum in their first week. If we look at the top 5 songs this week, all five of them would be multiplatinum under the old criteria (Here would be the certification of the top 10 under the old criteria: 3x, 2x, 2x, 3x, 5x, 4x, 1x, 7x, - and 2x. Here is what they are under the new criteria: G, G, G, G, 1x, G, -,1x, -, and -). The RIAA feels that certifications should be achievable, but not too common, so they changed the rules.
From the RIAA:
New Thresholds for Digital Single Certifications - As the digital music marketplace continues to mature, we recognized a need to raise the existing sales criteria for the Digital Gold and Platinum program to meet the physical sales levels that we have recognized since the program was created in 1958. As such, effective immediately, new certification levels for the RIAA Digital Single Gold & Platinum Program will be:
Gold = 500,000
Platinum = 1,000,000
Multi-Platinum = 2,000,000 (in increments of 1,000,000)
The new certification levels for the RIAA Digital Gold & Platinum program are effective immediately. All pending requests for digital single certification will be completed under the original certification levels and then adjusted to the proper category under the new system. In the next week, all digital singles currently certified at Gold, Platinum, 2x Platinum, 3x Platinum, and 4x Platinum will be converted to Gold status. All 5x - 9x Platinum digital singles will be converted to Platinum status.
Kirsten is faster than a speeding bullet…eat your heart out, Superman.
From Idol Chatter (Ken Barnes) I’m summarizing:
Daughtry was at No. 11, …drops from No. 5 to 12, selling 54,000, down 22%, for a total of 2.72 million.
Carrie falls 11-16, selling 40,000 (down 14%) for a total of 5.62 million,
Elliott drops 41-62, selling 11,000, a 21% drop, and totaling 262,000. Bucky’s right behind him, dropping 51-63 with 11,000 sold, just a 2% drop; his total is 164,000. Fantasia… dropping 65-97 after selling 7,700, 17% off her last week’s total, for a total of 405,000. And Kellie falls 103-128, selling 6,000, 13% below last week; her total is 553,000.
I found ticket prices drop closer to concert date. I paid more than market price last year for the “sold out” Meadowlands show and when I get there, there were empty seats in the orchestra.
And Nevada keeps records that would rival St. Peter himself.
Thanks for posting the actual declaration. The RIAA is frustrating in it’s lack of completeness in detailing when the rules changed…or maybe I can’t figure out where to find the good stuff on their site (and gabam is correct in that the internet contains so much conflicting information on this. Linked wiki pages even disagree).
I briefly looked for a press release/news article/something to post about the change, but came up with a million pages of other stuff.
thank you Kirsten
Elliott is doing great for an indie artist, but I’m certain that had he received major promo (a la Daughtry or Kelly Clarkson), he could do an easy platinum. One performance on Idol got him the largest sales increase of a returning contestant.
The only time I saw his video on TV was when it debuted on TRL. I have MTV Hits, and I hear that it’s been seen there a few times, but I only watch it occasionally. I still can’t shake that very cheap feel of the video. It looks so early 90s and really doesn’t work well with such a catchy, modern song such as “Wait For You”, IMO.
I DO, however, hear him on the radio a lot.
One addition to the digital download numbers:
52 Daughtry “It’s Not Over” 19,000 Total: 1.31 million
Thanks Kirsten and Nevada for all your info.
Thanks Valley!
As people find numbers, please post them and we’ll update the main post.
Thank you very much Kirsten and Nevada. You are both amazing.
Tony, Elliott’s video is in rotation on VH1. I’ve seen it eight times on VH1, starting last Friday. They started playing it last Thursday. They only show videos early morning so between 3:00 AM and 10:00AM would be the times to catch it. It looks great on TV to me. He was one of three “contenders” for the VH1 Top 20 Countdown last week. The VJ said that they only needed a few more votes to make the Top 20 Countdown.

Bucky is # 85 on the Hot 100. Looks like five different idols charting. However, I don’t see Jordin or Blake.
Jordin is at 72 and Blake at 59.
The following Idols are in the Hot 100 this week: Daughtry (2), Carrie (2), Kelly, Elliott, Fantasia, Blake, Jordin, Bucky and Kellie. That’s 9 Idols and 11 songs. 11% of the Hot 100 are Idols.
Go Idols!
