Little bit of Idol unrelated sales news:
Lil’ Wayne’s new album debuted moving 1,005,545 units. That’s got a lot of people excited because many thought in the current market, we wouldn’t be seeing anybody open with a million plus units. So, this proves that you can still open big!

Thank you for posting this. So glad TOML went gold.
great news Jordin!!!! Good Job!
So now that Magic Rainbows has gone gold, it can go away now, right?
Congratulations to my boy DC, though, even though the lyrics of his song give me diabetes.
That is awesome for Jordin. I admit that I never thought she’d sell that much. I’m happy to be wrong.
weeeeeeee go jordin :) 2xplat :)
I love No Air!! They used the song in SYTYCD for the dance couple Katee and Joshua and it was amazing!! I love the song more after that…
It’s actually quite impressive. I believe that it is only the second single from an Idol to go multiplatinum (the other being “Before He Cheats”). She’s playing with the big boys/girls now.
Congrats too to Cookie for turning treacle into gold.
i’d be interested in tattoo’s numbers
last i saw it was close to 1.6million copies
but i guess its fallen off so we dont get numbers anymore
and yes congrats to cookies magic rainbow :) i love that song (as coronation songs go its awesome)
Way to go, Jordin! I’m not surprised No Air is double platinum, even after being out for some time now, that song is still getting massive airplay.
And congrats to Cookie on his first gold record. May it be the first in a long line (all of which I’m sure will be better and less syrupy
)
Way to go Cookie and Jordin! See there really is gold at the end of the msgic rainbow!
I figured after No Air was played during the SYTYCD routine last week, that Jordin would get a nice sales boost. :) Although we all know that Magic Rainbow isn’t everyone’s cup of tea obviously, I’m still glad it went gold.
WTG to Cookie & Jordin! :)
I expect the jury is still out on how Jordin can sell on her own, though, absent Chris Brown. Something tells me that he’s got at least as much to do with the double platinum as she does.
And you can’t do all your songs with a hot guest singer. I wouldn’t expect Jordin to do more than half this well on no-guest song, in the future. That’s still quite good, if she pulls it off, just not in Carrie Underwood territory.
Trina FTW!
I wonder if someone from Idol will ever sell 1 million in a week?
Jordin’s Tattoo downloads as of a week ago were 1.67 million. I don’t think the jury is out on her ability to sell singles. She’s doing great even without Chris Brown (although he’s a big help.) Jordin can’t touch Carrie’s album sales but she’s in in her league as a seller of singles.
Hooray for the pot of gold at the end of the magic rainbow! (TM Trina)
TOML sure has exceeded expectations, hasn’t it? I remember during the season, some people’s reasoning for why David shouldn’t win was “because then he’d have to put out the crappy coronation song that won’t get any airplay and will ruin his credibility forever and ever”.
Well, so far, I’d say he’s not doing too bad for himself, magic rainbows and all.
I hate all the coronation songs (except Kelly’s) because they’re such cheesy songs. It’s still a good sign for Cook that the song is getting played on the radio but who doubts he’s the most commercial male winner they’ve had. As far as I remember, Jordin had the lowest selling single and got little radio play with her sappy song. And she’s doing fine now.
ty jpfan i was wondering how tattoo was doing
:)
David Cook is also No. 40 in the Top 40 mediabase now - so Gold all round.
There’s no gold for getting into the Top 40 chart. It just means you can officially call the song a Top 40 hit. Obviously, failing to enter the top 40 songs on that chart means a song has flopped on Pop radio. Sad but true.
Only the second coronation song to enter Top 40, yes?
Kelly being the other.
Congrats to Jordin and David!
Congratulations to David Cook for going gold and this is no small feat accomplish for a magic rainbow song.
He is getting a lot of radio play and I believe together with the tour and tv promotions will still sell much more. I want TOML to stick around for a long time and to sell much more. He himself has stated that he loves the song and has made it his own. Every time he sings it he changes it up and makes it new. I love the song and associate it with David´s story.
I am hoping that Magic Rainbow will be used for a waltz on SYTYCD because it has the right time signature (6/8), and there just aren’t that many current songs that work for waltzes. Like “You and Me,” which Danny and Anya did their gorgeous Viennese Waltz to last season.
Maybe a performance (a really good one!) on SYTYCD would give TOML a little bump now that graduation season is over. But I suppose wedding season is upon us, and it can be used for that, too. C’mon, brides and grooms! Learn to waltz and use “Time of My Life” for your wedding song. All wedding songs are sappy.
It’s great to see that Magic Rainbows has gone gold so fast. And congrats to Jordin, too, but only because I am feeling generous. I really, really hate that song.
Perhaps someday she will come out with something I can stand. I hold out hope.
It is way too early to tell if Cook will be the show’s most - really, the only - commercial male winner. They’ve never had a successful male AI winner but there’s a lot of reason to believe that Cook will pull it through for them. At any rate, I am happy for the success he has right now and hope this will be the first gold record of many.
Yaay for GOLD!
And I am totally apart of that million (twice) that bought Nsync’s cd’s. Shut up, I heart JT. He is the only other man I love/obsess over as much as Cookie. And I am over 30, heh.
Glad to see ToML make gold in less than a month. Looking forward to seeing how he sells with a song that is actually tailored to his style (and that does not have the lyric “magic rainbow” in it).
I know that the itunes partnership has probably helped ToML some, but I wonder with this particular song how many CDs might have been bought (if they’d been available) by schools for gradulations….
I have to agree with you. Smart marketing to have Chris Brown on it. Jordin is sweet but when I listened to her on the finale–I had a sugar rush. Maybe it’s not my cup of tea or something but that song was so “gooey” and nothing I would buy.
I love TOML because I will associate it with Cook winning American Idol. I’ve heard so many versions already of it. Cook puts a little “grit” into it. If he had a little more time to mull it over until he “perfected” it like he did with his Collective Soul song, who knows how much more he would have sold. He admits he would never have “magic rainbow” in any song he would do, but that just proves how talented he is to sell as well as he did.
I just hope that when he releases his album that he doesn’t release it unless he is perfectly satisfied with it rather than rush to get it out there after the tour. I have no doubt that Cook could easily tour on his own and sell anything without any “guest” while Jordin couldn’t pull that off.
