    Kelly’s first week numbers:
    1 Kelly Clarkson “Thankful” 297,400
2 Kelly Clarkson “My December” 291,213
    3 Kelly Clarkson “Breakaway” 250,432

The first number is the position on the BB200 Album’s chart, though it also works out to the position of the albums relative to each other.

  3. 3 purplesmile Jul 4th, 2007 at 11:17 am

So My December did relatively well, after all. :)

I saw this video linked to at etrain and thought it was very funny. Elliott’s WFY is a good example of this sure-fire formula for writing a hit song. Heheh.

Thanks for all of the stats, Kirsten.

Is there any place that gives the number of digital videos sold each week? I was just wondering how Elliott’s videos are selling on iTunes. Two versions were recently added.

Hannah Montanta - Wow at all of the stats for her and for Miley. Billy Ray must be very proud.

I’m not particularly a fan of Kelly Clarkson, but that 291,000 figures is a bit surprising to me. I thought it would be a bigher than that, just based on her last success. Just goes to show that performance of a new CD sometimes has little bearing on success of future albums, at least in the first week.

  6. 6 radname Jul 4th, 2007 at 1:54 pm

So, is Kellys cd a success or failure?

  7. 7 griz Jul 4th, 2007 at 2:10 pm

So, is Kellys cd a success or failure?

Sometimes it’s not that cut and dry, radname. Kelly might be quite happy selling less albums but be much more satistied as an artist who was given a chance to put out her *own* album. In that case, she is a complete success. To $Clive$, maybe not much so.

To a lot of serious musicians, artistic integrity is FAR more important that being a mega-seller. I don’t know if Kelly is one of those people, however.

  8. 8 squishy Jul 4th, 2007 at 2:41 pm

It doesn’t matter so much what the opening sales were for an album but whether the album has longevity. “Breakaway” opened less than her other 2 albums yet went on to sell close to 6 million copies in the U.S. alone with many top 10 hits.

“My December” opening sales were decent but the concern that the record label/Clive has is that the CD doesn’t have the potential radio hits thus may not have the longevity that her previous albums had. If this is the case than “My December” will not be considered a success.

  9. 9 radname Jul 4th, 2007 at 2:48 pm

My December DOES have radio hits on it though, I don’t know why everyone keeps saying that other then the reports that Clive thought it needed more “radio friendly” songs

  10. 10 squishy Jul 4th, 2007 at 3:08 pm

I don’t think that “My December” has radio hits. There are songs on it that I really like like “Sober” (which I have downloaded) but I don’t think it will be a radio hit. The more pop songs on the album I don’t think are very good.

    But again we shall see…

While I’m really surprised at Miley’s numbers, I’m really not. I started watching “Hannah Montana” during the Christmas break, and I found it really funny.

There’s no way I’d buy the album (all that sugar would give me diabetes) but I watch the show. And this is a 21-year-old straight male talking. =p

    *hangs head in utter shame*

  12. 12 squishy Jul 4th, 2007 at 3:38 pm

Never watched Hannah Montana’s show nor will I. But if I was a tween I probably would have. I used to watch corny shows like “Saved By the Bell” and “Beverly Hills 90210″ back in the days.

  13. 13 angelia Jul 4th, 2007 at 3:45 pm

I don’t think the first week’s sales rank is any yardstick of whether an album will be a hit. The first week’s sales will reflect the votes of confidence from the artist’s fanbase. After that, it is a whole different story when the general public votes with their wallets. So we will just have to wait and see how it shakes out for both Kelly and Miley.

Well Tony, welcome to my world. I love the show because it’s good, clean fun for my young daughters. Good, clean fun is in short supply these days. I pre-ordered the Hannah Montana cd. My girls love her music and I find myself singing along too. She’s a goood kid. I’ll take Hannah Montana over the Britney’s and Lindsey’s of the world anyday.

Tony, your candidness is refreshing. Thank you.

    Ditto, ditto.

I read somewhere that Hannah Montana (the show) is a throwback to the sitcoms of old and that’s partly why it is so popular. What exactly that means, I have no idea but I do watch it regularly with my girls and find it quite enjoyable. The guy who plays her brother is a crack-up. And while HM is funny, I find the Suite Life of Zach & Cody to be painfully *unfunny*

What do you bet that the next H.S. Musical CD takes top spot once it comes out? I think the teenage/tween audience (and their parents) are craving good, clean shows and music.

I’ve never seen “The Suite Life of Zack and Cody”. It doesn’t look too interesting to me. The only other Disney-original show I watch is “That’s So Raven” (and “Even Stevens” before it stopped airing).

And yes, when compared to women like Lindsay & Britney, Hannah Montana IS a better role-model and I’d rather have my children listening to her rather than them.

  18. 18 hs Jul 4th, 2007 at 7:57 pm

Yup, add me to the list of oeople who watch these Disney shows. I just plop down with my kids and watch what they are watching, and the shows are pretty darned good.

Want to bring this over, too:

I don’t know if anyone posted this but it’s from Billboard (they do recaps of the week). It’s in the radio news section and will be published tomorrow (I think)

“Also making a move into the top 10 is season six “American Idol” finalist Elliott Yamin with his debut single “Wait For You.” The track — which moves up one spot to No. 10 — also becomes independent label Hickory Records’ first-ever top 10. Yamin is the fifth “American Idol” contestant to reach the chart’s upper quadrant, following Kelly Clarkson, Chris Daughtry (as leader of Daughtry), Mario Vazquez and Carrie Underwood.”

Elliott is the only Idol person CLIVE DIDN’T SIGN TO ACHIEVE THIS.

    Alright…JPL kicked Ayla’s ass!!!

Go JPL!!!! Almost twice as many in sales. Woo! No stopping him now.

BTW, I’ve updated the post with Ken’s download and album numbers.

Carrie Underwood’s “Jesus, Take the Wheel” just went platinum.

  22. 22 jobbix Jul 4th, 2007 at 10:47 pm

Congrats mucho to JPL for winning the weekly Ayla/JPL sales derby! :clap_tb:

Double digit sales with a 300% sales surge. At this rate, he can sell 1000 in six weeks! :jittery_tb:

Condolence mucho to KC for hitting the 300K wall at the third attempt. :rolleyes_tb: I know she has sold a gazillion records world-wide. But she got beat by a fourteen-year-old Disney character/singer at the first week. It’s a bit embarrassing any way you spin it…. :shock_tb:

  23. 23 purplesmile Jul 5th, 2007 at 12:06 am

Jon Peter Lewis “Stories From Hollywood” 15 (200%) Total: 900

I thought JPL had already sold 900 CDs by last week. He sells 15 more this week and the total remains unchanged. Is this sabotage? Hmmm… LOL

  24. 24 stelladallas Jul 5th, 2007 at 1:44 am

Hannah Montana is a cute show, but I don’t think Miley’s voice is anything special. Of course her CD sold well…the power of Disney!

My kids like “The Suite Life of Zack and Cody” better. As others have pointed out, it’s nice to have good, clean shows for kids to watch. Too bad Zack and Cody don’t sing. Disney could be sitting on another gold mine! LOL

  25. 25 dcd74 Jul 5th, 2007 at 5:20 am

How is it embarrassing to get outsold by a 14 year old? She is a songwriter as well as a singer/actress and just as much of an “artist” as anyone else on the chart.
Furthermore.. I guess DAUGHTRY, Bo Bice, Fantasia, Taylor, Katherine and artists non Idol related should be “embarrassed” because Hannah outsold their first weeks as well.
Kelly had a good week, nothing to be embarrassed about in my book.

  26. 26 eyin Jul 5th, 2007 at 4:59 pm

Hey mj/kirsten.. thanks for the update. But shouldn’t Brad Paisley’s “5th Gear” be on the chart table too? It features Carrie. :)

  27. 27 ealbino Jul 5th, 2007 at 9:21 pm

Disney is outselling lots of stars these days.. Nothing for Kelly to be embarrased about!

  28. 28 Sarah Jul 5th, 2007 at 9:22 pm

Actually, “My December” has at least two more good pop singles - “One Minute” and “How I Feel”. If it catches on, “Sober” could be a big hit on AC and HAC, I think. I don’t see it being played on many top 40 stations. Maybe “Be Still” too.

I’m not surprised by Kelly’s opening numbers at all. I was thinking somewhere around the 300,000 ballpark figure. It’s not like she was going to sell 5 million albums the first week out. Geez.

However, this is what, the 3rd or 4th straight week that Daughtry has not been in the top 10 for sales? Could they finally be losing steam?? Sounds like it’s time for a new single. Heh.

I don’t watch Hannah Montana, but I have 15, 13, and 10 year old neices. I understand the appeal. You can’t deny the power of tweens. And it’s good clean fun, so I’m sure most parents have no problem buying it for the kids. Heck, last year, “High School Musical”, a SOUNDTRACK, was the 2nd best selling album of the year, almost beating out Carrie Underwood. Disney is a force to be reckoned with (*saying this as I curse all the tourists who cause me to circle parking lots for 15 minutes to find a spot and sit thru 2 or 3 traffic lights because lines are so long*).
