Kirsten, is DC off the Billboard chart this week?

Kirsten, is DC off the Billboard chart this week?

I don’t thinks so. I have only seen the Top 50 numbers (plus a few) right now and the BB download chart is the Top 100. Based on DC’s numbers last week and the general sales trend, I would guess that he’s still in the top 100.

Plus, the song is doing well on some of the Airplay charts, so he will appear on multiple Billboard charts this week.

Jordin OSAAT has been the #1 taking off song on the Top 40 for three days in a row. This song is def her third big hit and will go Top 20 easily. Maybe even much higher.

    whoops! wrong thread.

    Thank you, K!

It’s really nice that Jordan is finding her own way into bestsellerdom through her singles. If you can’t beat ‘em. . .beat ‘em another way. :)

I’ve only voted for DC, and for all I know may never vote again, because this kind of obsession doesn’t happen very often (thank god), but during Jordan’s season, I rooted for her. I thought she glowed with potential starpower, and she seemed like a nice girl.

So, as DC left the top 50, does that mean we won’t get anymore sales info about TOML? Ken Barnes predicted he’d outsell DIMYP within a few weeks, but I guess without the figures, we won’t know about it?

Don’t forget that the first 5 seasons songs were available as CD singles…

“No Air” was #3 again this week in the UK. The best peak of an American Idol there, ever.
And is almost reaching 100k, which is pretty good! And the album is rising too. Go Jordin! :)

Yes, but he’s getting his butt kicked on the sales of Commercial Singles. Even Degarmo is beating him. LOL.

The music world is in a massive state of flux. I see Ken has changed his tune on downloads. I remember when he used to enrage the Kat fans by dividing the download numbers by 3 for Idol comparison purposes.

I am shocked that Jordin’s single sold more than Taylor’s. I thought that song was the worst yet of coronation songs and I felt sorry for her singing it.

Billboard will publish the complete Top 100, and I’m sure DC will be on it for this week and possiblly the next couple of weeks (Magic Rainbow has been hovering around 50 on iTunes Top 100, so maybe he’ll be in the 60s at least this week). It’s just that the person who provides the figures on Wednesday only provides the Top 50 plus other numbers that he/she finds interesting. Can’t blame the person for not caring about TOML, lol. Once it drops off the Top 100, I think Ken Barnes can probably continue to get the numbers for it.

Jordin is doing really well. I’m debating buying tickets to take my daughter to the Jordin/Jesse McCartney show next month but the idea makes me a little queasy.

Those are JUST DOWNLOAD NUMBERS. Taylor sold over over 600K copies of DIMYP altogether, including PHYSICAL COPIES. Hence, my disclaimer above.

I am shocked that Jordin’s single sold more than Taylor’s. I thought that song was the worst yet of coronation songs and I felt sorry for her singing it.

Those are just the downloaded tracks. Taylor and the others from Season 5 and before also had Commercial Singles available (either has physical CDs or as bundled downloads). Here are the combined stats for downloads/physical from that same link:

    1. Clay/This Is the Night: 994,000
    2. Kelly/A Moment Like This: 974,000
    3. Carrie/Inside Your Heaven: 796,000
    4. Ruben/Flying Without Wings: 774,000
    5. Taylor/Do I Make You Proud: 658,000
    6. David C./The Time of My Life: 615,000
    7. Fantasia/I Believe: 509,000
    8. Bo/Inside Your Heaven: 400,000
    9. Jordin/This Is My Now: 273,000
    10. Katharine/My Destiny: 262,000
    11. Diana/I Believe: 223,000

AI did not release Commercial Singles for Season 6 or 7. That’s why it’s kind of tough to compare between seasons. On the one hand, people might logically buy multiple copies of physical singles (one for the car, one for home), but there is no logical reason to do that for downloads (though, you can and SoundScan does count multiple downloads. Fred over at BB settled that question)*. On the other hand, downloads are cheaper (sometimes 1/8th the cost), so it’s easier to move units.

There are special exceptions to almost every coronation single.

*Note that all AI fan bases seem to contain a militant wing that will bulk buy physical or digital singles to drive up the numbers. It’s a well known phenomena, but it likely doesn’t make all that much of a difference. The majority of people are, thankfully, normal.

I totally read that and it went right over my head. *note to self* Don’t read and muliti task at the same time. Sorry if I ticked you off.

Kirsten, thanks for those numbers. I thought I remembered that Taylor sold pretty well that is why I was shocked.

  17. 17 Trina Jul 16th, 2008 at 4:11 pm

LOL he missed the Top 50 by one spot. Per Ken Barnes

David C.’s The Time of My Life is off a point on the chart, 50-51, selling 25,000, an 8% decline, for a total of 640,000.

  18. 18 Jolene Jul 16th, 2008 at 4:35 pm

LOL he missed the Top 50 by one spot. Per Ken Barnes

Wow, that’s not a big decline at all! Last week he was down by over 20%, IIRC, and this week only by 8%?
Aww, it’s the Magic Rainbow that could.
Yeah, he’ll pass Taylor within a week or two, tops.

  19. 19 jpfan Jul 16th, 2008 at 5:26 pm

Apples and oranges and all that but when you consider that Taylor got very little radio play and Cook is getting a lot, Taylor’s numbers aren’t bad. It doesn’t matter that much in the end but who would have guessed from her poor coronation numbers that Jordin would become the queen of Idol downloads.

It doesn’t matter that much in the end but who would have guessed from her poor coronation numbers that Jordin would become the queen of Idol downloads.

I think it is because Jordin is getting massive promotion from her label and she is also getting huge airplay (IMO also resulting from a push from her label). Taylor got none. So I agree, Taylor did pretty well, considering.

  21. 21 spritely Jul 16th, 2008 at 6:44 pm

Yeah, Jolene, that’s a nice sharp decline in the decline, as it were. Tour must be helping. It would be interesting to know how BB does its figuring–what % sales, what % airplay, etc.–to see how each affects the other.

  22. 22 jpfan Jul 16th, 2008 at 6:56 pm

I honestly don’t think the tour has any effect on Cook’s sales which are affected by radio play. The more a song gets played on the radio, the more likely a new fan will hear it and want to buy it. The fans who go to Idol tours probably already have their copy of Cook’s song. While Cook’s sales have declined weekly since the finale, the big increase in radio play is generating a level of consistent sales for the song.

I think “back in the day” someone like Clay could sell huge amounts w/o radio play but I think those days are over for Idol contestants.

No, you didn’t tick me off at all. I just happen to love all caps… ;).

On the chart for Billboard w/e 7/19, it says that albums from Leona and Jordin are gold but I think Leona is Plat and Jordin hasn’t been certified yet. Is there anyway to confirm that Jordin is certainfied gold yet?

How long did it take for Clay, Kelly, Carrie, Rubben & Taylor to reach these ?

  26. 26 Sherry L Jul 17th, 2008 at 10:51 am

Wasn’t Taylor the last winner to have his Idol song go #1 on the Hot 100?

I think Cook could have had a #1 if they had relase a physical version of “Time Of My Life”. I know physical single almost have no place in the market anymore, but I do think they still work for Idol.

I think there are a lot of fans of the show who might not be into downloading, who would have picked that up.

Just my two cents on that.

I believe “Time Of My Life” is #52 this week on the Hot 100.

  27. 27 Trina Jul 17th, 2008 at 11:14 am

Even better, he moved up to #49 on the Hot 100. He also went up from #8 to #6 on the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart and is the greatest gainer there.

  28. 28 Sherry L Jul 17th, 2008 at 1:17 pm

Oh, yeah — I was looking at last week’s position for the Hot 100. Nice to see it’s able to move up a little.

Obviously it’s dong very well on the AC charts. I wonder if DC ever thought he would have such a big AC hit!
