As mentioned on the Headlines thread yesterday, the formula for the Hot 100 will change next week (for 08/11).
Here is more info from Pulse:
Thanks, Kirsten. :)
That’s really nice to see about Elliott’s Wait For You. It’s not my favorite of his songs but I’m glad it has become this big a hit. Almost a gold. :)
Why the return to the emphasis on airplay?
They don’t want sales to overpower the airplay. The Hot 100 is meant to be a measure of who is successful on both airplay and sales. In the past, sales were so low because the physical single collapsed (around 2002), so they had to boost the weighting of sales. Now, they feel that downloads are becoming too dominant. A successful single in sales without high airplay numbers can dominate the charts.
Plus, it may have something to do with how record companies are playing games with the downloads. They will supress a single (either not offer the single for sale or pull it from sales) until it has high enough airplay to combine with sales to get high on the Hot 100. With downloads counting for less, this will be harder to do.
Finally, there have been a lot of complaints that R&B and Hip Hop songs which used to dominate the Hot 100 chart are having trouble getting on that chart now. They have higher airplay number, but they tend not to get the sales number Pop songs get.
I’m not saying I agree with any of these arguments, I’m just saying these are some of the ones I’ve seen for justifying the change.
Has Elliott’s “Wait For You” surpassed Katharine’s “Over It” yet?
This week, “Wait For You” is at 427,698 (#22). At last check of the Top 50 Digital songs (5/12/07), “Over It” was at 364,135 (#41).
No, not yet. According to Ken Barnes, last week “Over It” had sold a total of 465,000 downloads (about 3,500 last week)
Thanks for the stats. The Idols are doing great.
Kellie Pickler’s album total sales # is incorrect on the above list. It has the same # as Fantasia’s CD. Kellie has sold over 500,000.
Good catch. Cut and paste error. I’ve fixed it. Thanks.
Kirsten, there are no sales numbers in Bucky’s listing above:
83 Bucky Covington “Bucky Covington” (-1%) Total: 223,000 (81)
The only SoundScan numbers I’ve run across so far:
5 11 CLARKSON*KELLY MY DECEMBER 41,746 58,593 505,172
Kirsten, isn’t it refreshing when people actually look at the data and find discrepancies? Apathy is my worst enemy when it comes to data!
Thanks Nevada. I’ve made the update.
Yes, hs, it is! I would rather I didn’t make the mistakes in the first place, but it is great that people help out in making sure that the numbers are correct. Nothing worse than bad numbers staying on the record.
I really appreciate the people who point out the discrepancies and/or bring numbers that they find here.
One of the truly great things about MJs is people bringing information from all over the internet. We all help to make this a community.
A huge thanks to MJ for giving us this fabulous place to gather.
