Ken Barnes has an interesting discussion comparing the download numbers for each theme night:

    http://blogs.usatoday.com/idolchatter/2007/07/idol-downloads-.html

Here is a run down of the stats (but he has some interesting reflections, so if you like numbers, I suggest you read it):

    Diana Ross: 28,000
    British Invasion: 93,000
    Songs that Inspire Gwen: 37,000
    Standards: 17,000
    Latin: 36,000
    Country: 90,000
    Idol Gives Back: 34,000
Bon Jovi: 204,000 (not including Melinda and Jordin)
    Bee Gees: 31,000
Judges/Producers/Performers Choice: 50,000 (not including Melinda)
Finale: 177,000 (just This is My Now)

#22 Elliott!!! Thanks for the info Kirsten.

    Lots of good news today.

I wonder why the downloads for Standards week were so low. I can’t really remember the night, so maybe that could explain it. I’ll go look at Ken’s listing to remind me what the contestants sang.

Big ouch to Melinda’s numbers. :glurps_tb: Nowhere near Blake or Jordin’s league. Her marketability is indeed a big question mark. :huh_tb:

Even bigger ouch to Sanjaya’s numbers. :jittery_tb: But I never took him seriously.. :laugh_tb:

  5. 5 mj Jul 18th, 2007 at 9:59 am

    Thanks MJ!

That would be Kirsten. :). Thanks Kirsten…

This must not include AI downloads. However, the numbers for everyone but Blake and Jordin are really bad. I can’t imagine a record company looking to sign any of the rest based on these numbers. I can’t remember how the individual downloads of the CD compilation did last year but I know some of them were able to track on the Hot 100 or Bubbling Under just based on downloads.

I can’t remember how the individual downloads of the CD compilation did last year

Here are the stats from August of last year (there was also physical CDs to purchase):

Melinda’s Have a Nice Day and I’m A Woman are not on there, so that may skew her numbers a little. Jordin’s Living On A Prayer is also missing, but YMMV on how much you think that would affect her numbers.

Sanjaya I’m actually surprised didn’t sell more considering the media push surrounding him. Good job by Gina selling so many of I’ll Stand By You.

Re: Melinda, remember that Blake and Jordin got HUGE pushes from AI, and the first couple of weeks after Finale they got featured EPs on iTunes. The others’ EPs didn’t even show up till afterwards, when the buzz from the show was starting to wear off. There’s also the argument that Melinda’s fanbase is less likely to download music vs. buy a CD.

Trina. Thanks for the EP numbers. Yay!

Thanks for the heads up jpfan. I’ve updated all the Top 200 with the SS numbers.

Here are the Hot 100 numbers (top 50)

18 Carrie Underwood “Before He Cheats” (17)
19 Elliott Yamin “Wait for You” (22)
    21 Daughtry “Home” (19)
    42 Fantasia “When I See U” (49)
49 Kelly Clarkson “Never Again” (31)

  14. 14 jpfan Jul 18th, 2007 at 11:46 pm

Wow. Elliott broke Top 20 on the Hot 100. Hooray. If those are total EP numbers, they are really terrible for everyone but Blake/Jordin.

  15. 15 Anna155 Jul 19th, 2007 at 2:01 am

Those numbers from Blake and Jordin aren’t good either; they’re not doing well at all.

According to last year, Taylor had over 100,000 downloads by August, but last year, physical singles were also available. His physical single, Do I Make You Proud, sold at least 500,000 copies, since it was certified gold. So, you’re talking over 600,000 total for that single, pretty much double what Blake and Jordin sold.

And, as you’ve seen from last year’s info, Taylor was outselling Daughtry. I don’t think these sales actually can predict how these Idols will really sell if they release their own albums, because when it counted, Daughtry creamed Taylor despite selling less than him in Idol singles.

  16. 16 dulce Jul 19th, 2007 at 5:54 am

You can’t compare the totals when physical singles have not been made available for the season sixers as opposed to last season. Not everyone downloads music. Some people would have probably went for the physical single over the download anyway so you just can’t compare. If you compare the download totals, Blake and Jordin are doing fine. To be fair, this is still mid July.

  17. 17 snuffles Jul 19th, 2007 at 3:29 pm

    MJ,

Ken Barnes claims that the figures he posted include the downloads from the official AmericanIdol.com web site.

I find that hard to believe because:

    1) The numbers are ridiculously low (even for Jordin and Blake when compared to previous seasons)
    2) You have stated on your blog that AI.com declined to submit their numbers to Soundscan. And apparently readers at the Pulse Board got the same info.

I’m inclined to believe that these numbers are only from ITunes. Is there a way you can find out if AI.com has submitted their numbers to Soundscan?

And if so, then where can we get the stats for the VIDEO downloads that happened over at the AI.com site as well?

    Thank you!

  18. 18 mj Jul 19th, 2007 at 7:18 pm

    2) You have stated on your blog that AI.com declined to submit their numbers to Soundscan. And apparently readers at the Pulse Board got the same info.

Yes, I did. And Ken Barnes says that those numbers have (from the AI site) just been made available. I would take Ken’s word for it. He is, as they say, THE MAN when it comes to sales stuff.

He works for USAToday, a huge media company, and as such, Ken has access to facts and figures that a lowly blogger such as myself doesn’t have. A Soundscan subscription costs thousands and thousands of dollars. I don’t have the means or the access to this expensive raw data.

Even though the news may be hard to swallow, I would take Ken’s numbers as gospel. He’s a good reporter. He has no reason to make this stuff up.

  19. 19 Anna155 Jul 19th, 2007 at 9:19 pm

To whoever mentioned physical singles, I get that. But we’re talking a large difference [like 300,000 or so between Taylor and Jordin with combined totals]. Now, if they hadn’t been available on iTunes, just AI, I can account for it.

Besides, single CDs don’t sell nearly as well as they did five years ago, which is probably what lead AI to this decision; it’s all about the money.

You know what’s hard to swallow, though, is the fact that Kevin Covais [?] sold more downloads last year than Melinda this year.

  20. 20 Trina Jul 19th, 2007 at 9:27 pm

CD singles do sell well for AI people though. Of course the total has declined for them over the years and they stopped selling the way they did back in season 2 for example, but I know someone like my mom picks up the singles every year but yet she doesnt go online or use iTunes. So I think to a point that does have some impact. Even doing a physical compilation CD they got cheap with this year. Jordin and Blake didn’t sell as well as previous Top 2′ers, but their numbers don’t look nearly as bad as the others who’s numbers are embarassing.
