For those fans of the Highschool Musical, the “High School Musical 2″ soundtrack had the second highest debut of the year with 615K albums sold last week (in the history of SoundScan, only 3 other soundtrack albums have moved more units than that: “The Bodyguard”, “Titanic” and “8 Mile”).
All told, 8 albums from the “Mouse House” (Beuna Vista Music Group) are in the top 50 (2 HSM, 2 Hannah Montana, Jonas Brothers, Plain White T’s, Aly & AJ and Rascal Flatts). They also have 11 songs in the Top 50 downloads (but I wouldn’t be surprised if I didn’t recognize a few of them and the total is even higher).
Disney certainly seems to have come up with a winning formula.
To keep this Idol related, two Idols reside on Disney sub-labels. Josh Gracin and Bucky Covington on Lyric records. Bucky got a mention in the BB Chart Alert today (which is where all this info is from):
“Newcomer Luke Bryan’s “I’ll Stay Me” enters The Billboard 200 at No. 24 and is the Hot Shot Debut on Top Country Albums at No. 2. On the country list, Bryan’s bow (25,000 copies) is the biggest for any rookie since Bucky Covington’s self-titled album opened atop the May 5 chart with 61,000 copies.

I’m responding to a comment in yesterday’s thread by Nevada.
I was working in a bookstore in January 2006, and we didn’t see this one coming, most of us had never heard of High School Musical. I remember working the Saturday morning after release, and selling out our entire meager supply to tweens before lunch time. I had to ask one of the tweens what it was. From where I sat, the stores and the label were caught by surprise. If we had more stock the first week of HSM1, we would have sold a lot more.

I just want to comment on Kimberley Locke. She had a free concert on LI on Saturday night as the opening act for Edwin McCain and Constantine (!).She announced she’d be signing autographs after the show. I noticed after Edwin’s 4 songs, some people had gotten her album - she was selling copies for $15. I figured I’d buy it and support her. Guess what? I waited for about 10 minutes in a line of perhaps 25 people, all with money in hand, and she got up and left. Way to go and sell 200 for the week, Kim! I can’t imagine she had somewhere to go so urgently to leave fans with their mouths hanging open. WTH!
Thanks for bringing over the numbers marco. I’ve added them to the post.
Big ouch to Kelly’s numbers.
Already dropped under Daughtry’s sales seven weeks after the release, while Hannah Montana still at #2…The little mouse has taken over the world..
