Kid Rock is #1 this week

Though he began charting albums on The Billboard 200 in 1999 — and started his recording career well before that — Kid Rock finally notches his first No. 1 album on The Billboard 200 this week. His “Rock N’ Roll Jesus” debuts atop the chart with 172,000 … A pair of country singers — LeAnn Rimes and Sara Evans — also start in the top 10 of the big chart … Josh Groban’s holiday album “Noel” arrives high on The Billboard 200, reminding us that it’s never too early to release a Christmas album — even if you haven’t even carved your Halloween pumpkin yet … Jennifer Lopez makes an under-the-radar debut with her new album “Brave” … In Progress Reports: Kenny Chesney earns his third No. 1 on Hot Country Songs this year, Billy Ray Cyrus looks to his daughter Miley for support, and Feist becomes only the second solo woman to chart on the Alternative/Modern Rock airplay chart this year.

Bruce Springsteen’s “Magic” slips to #2, selling 133,000 (down 60%), and those of you mentioned “Alter Bridge”, “Blackbird” starts at No. 13 with 47,000

    Direct from Idol Chatter:

“Daughtry is one of those rare and enviable albums that keeps selling steadily. That’s how Nickelback got to 6 million recently, and it’s a big factor in why Chris and company’s debut is up to 3.19 million. It sold just under 20,000 this week, up 0.7% from last week, and moves from No. 38 to No. 39 on the chart.

Next comes Carrie, still hanging on in the top 100, moving 89-91 with 9,000 sales, down 3.6% from last week, for a total of 5.96 million. Six million approaches soon.

Kelly drops 124-149 and sells 5,000, down 16.7%. Her total is 678,000. Maybe the tour will pick it up a bit; I’m not confident that will happen.

Finally, Elliott drops 155-179 and may be off the chart next week or the week after. He sold 4,000, down 16.6%, for a total of 422,000.”

    More Idol Chatter nbrs:
Fantasia sold 2,200, down from 2,400, to total 484,000.

Bucky also sold 2,200, down from 2,600, for a total of 285,000.

Kellie sold 1,900, down from 2,300, and is at 637,000 cumulatively.

Mandisa sold 900, down from 1,000, and has totaled 53,000.

Katharine sold 500, down from 600, for a 358,000 total.

Then it’s down to the 200-and-under brigade:

Clay holds at 200 and has sold 518,000.

Taylor holds at 200 and has sold 696,000.

Constantine sells 200, down from 500, for a total of 21,000.

Ruben sells 100, down from 200, and is at 235,000.

Kimberley holds at 100 for a total of 16,000.

Carmen holds at 100 to total 2,300.

Paris holds at 100 for a total of 20,000.

Ken Barnes gives the downloads for the week:
Daughtry’s Over You becomes the top Idol track on the digital songs chart, according to Nielsen SoundScan, moving from No. 28 to No. 21 on the strength of 31,000 downloads sold. That’s an 8% improvement over the previous week; the song’s total sales are 341,000.

Jordin’s Tattoo is right behind it, remaining at No. 22 despite an 8% sales decline to 30,000. Its three-week total is 97,000.

The same eight Idol tracks that appeared on the chart last week return this week. Elliott’s Wait for You moves 64-64, with sales down 4% to a rounded 15,000, for a total of 733,000.

Carrie’s So Small creeps up 69-67 but drops 1% to the mid-14,000s, totaling 210,000. Her Before He Cheats drops 86-90 on the chart but gains 1.4% in sales, up to a bit over 11,000, bringing its total to 1.85 million.

Daughtry’s Home is down 89-93 but is flat in sales (it actually sold five more copies than last week) at a bit less than 11,000. Total is 1.07 million. It’s Not Over, which lived up to its title by returning to the chart at 196 last week, climbs to 191 and increases its sales by 4% to the mid-5,000s, for a total of 1.48 million.

And Kelly & Reba’s Because of You drops 123-129 with an accompanying 6% dip in sales, to just under 7,000 and a total of 189,000.

Finally, on the Katharine/Over It watch, the song comes tantalizingly close to a 500,000-download total by selling 1,900 copies to go to 499,000. Next week should be the time to break out the champagne or whatever

Ouch..four-digit and three-digit sales all across the board, except Chris. Maybe it’s time for an update on JPL and Ayla, if they are still selling at all… :dry_tb:

  6. 6 angelia Oct 17th, 2007 at 9:16 pm

I think that the sales for Ayla and JPL are not available anymore (not to Ken Barnes at any rate); Ayla had gotten down to about 8 sales a week and JPL wasn’t much better.

How can McPhee have a gold single for “Over It” with such dismal Billboard numbers? The CD and “Love Story” were huge flops.

  8. 8 IDOLIDOL Oct 18th, 2007 at 1:47 pm

Elliott waited a bit too long to release his second single, “One Word”. It officially hits radio this week. Let’s hope after some major airplay his CD jumps up the charts again.

I guess it’s good that he released “One Word” now as the Grammy nominations are right around the corner. :)

  9. 9 jpfan Oct 18th, 2007 at 4:07 pm

A single gets a gold record when it sells 500K downloads and I think Kat is almost there. It has nothing to do with radio play or how the CD did it.

Sales of physical singles and albums have different RIAA thresholds than do the criteria for digital downloads. The digital awards were started by the RIAA in 2004. Ringtone awards were added in 2006. The current standards for digital awards are:

    Digital Gold
    100,000 downloads

    Digital Platinum
    200,000 downloads

    Digital Multi-Platinum
400,000 downloads then in increments of 200,000

Izzy, your info is outdated. The rules changed in 2006. Gold is 500,000, Platinum is 1,000,000 for singles and CDs. It doesn’t matter whether they are digital or physical. Same numbers apply for certifications now.

Billboard is still showing the same RIAA criteria for their 2006 digital certifications. None are listed as of yet for 2007. http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/riaa/digital.jsp For some reason, digital certifications do not seem to be as prevalent as the certifications for physical singles and CDs (which are at the higher thresholds).

RIAA had initially made the criteria lower for digital certifications vs. single certifications, since downloads are per song, whereas physical singles often have an A and B side. If RIAA has revised the criteria for 2007 downloads, it should be on their website or on Billboard soon.

Congratulations to Katharine on her download sales for Over It. Great numbers.

    This is correct.
