To be frank, my hope is that DC sells 183K haha. It’s not because I think it’s a competition, and I really hope for the day when both Davids can do well without having to worry about the media constantly comparing them… but I *really* don’t want to see any more stupid headlines about David vs. David. I’m thinking DC doing just as well as Archie might ward off the bulk of that… maybe wishful thinking…

Oh, if he sells the same as Archie we’ll still get those stupid headlines. He has to sell MORE than Archie to avoid them. And not just more either, if he sells 184K that won’t do, he has to sell enough so that the media can’t retread the Clay/Rueben Daughtry/Taylor thing. But I’m with you… I want whatever needs to happen to stop the media from making comparisons to happen. Nothing will stop the internet fanwarring, unfortunately. Sigh.

  2. 52 sma11ie Nov 19th, 2008 at 12:34 pm

That’s 942,000 units - 15.7% of all US downloads that week. That’s what Cook can do with a half a week of sales, largely cover songs, and songs sung weeks ago once on a TV show.

Wow, your list just gave me goosebumps, Kirsten. And half of those songs weren’t even studio recordings– they were crapping minute-30 live recordings! Very compelling argument, Kirsten, and as always, love the numbers. But just a quick thing, seems you included #16 and $26, which were Archie’s– was that by accident?

  3. 53 elisad Nov 19th, 2008 at 12:37 pm

Nah, outselling Archie won’t work either. The media would say he’s lower on chart, I kid you not.

I still don’t think he’ll outsell Sasha or Nick, and who knows how many would GnR sell the first day(would be near 60% of their first week sales, which IMO should be huge), or Taylor’s second week.

  4. 54 tinawina Nov 19th, 2008 at 12:37 pm

Damn Kirsten just may have changed my mind about Light On. Wow, you’re good! LOL.

Elisad: Lord, I hope not. LOL. I don’t think he will outsell Bey. Maybe Nickleback, but that’s a longshot. If they didn’t do it when the single came out, maybe they won’t do it for the album. Ugh.

  5. 55 Kirsten Nov 19th, 2008 at 12:40 pm

Archie’s Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me by accident.

LOL. Sorry. I’ll remove it. I just did a big cut and paste from that old post and tried to remove the other guys. That was an amazing week for Cookie. I knew he was doing well, but that left me stunned. I’d love to know what the numbers were for those other weeks were during the show.

  6. 56 Trina Nov 19th, 2008 at 12:45 pm

I still don’t think he’ll outsell Sasha or Nick, and who knows how many would GnR sell the first day, or Taylor’s second week.

The competition is even more than that

With this week’s release of albums by David Cook, Beyonce and Nickelback, this weekend’s release of Chinese Democracy and Monday’s drop of Kanye West, the Killers and Ludacris, next week’s chart promises to be a royal rumble to win the number one.

It’s going to be one overloaded sales week.

As always great post Kristen. I feel like I’ve been hearing forever “wait for this..” or “wait for..”. If LO was going to take off it would have. The fact that Z100 didn’t even bother to play it yesterday should speak volumes. I don’t buy the Carrie strategy theory either. Both her songs before BHC were still huge hits that helped her sell albums. In most cases that I can recall with AI’ers if a first single doesn’t do much if a 2nd single is released it gets even less promotion.

  7. 57 elisad Nov 19th, 2008 at 12:50 pm

^Why are they dropping on Monday?

  8. 58 shell29 Nov 19th, 2008 at 12:58 pm

I really think the big story next week will be Beyonce and I Am…Sasha Fierce, regardless of whether Cook’s opening week of album sales is significantly higher than Archie’s or not. I remember Cook fans fretting about an onslaught of negative press when Light On sold less in its debut week than Crush, and that never materialized.

  9. 59 dulce Nov 19th, 2008 at 1:07 pm

I agree. Light On is not going to pick up steam. I don’t think RCA has much to lose by releasing another single now, considering that there are several waiting in the wings on that album. “Declaration” is strong, uptempo. Should work following the debacle aka. Light On. But to give some hope to the masses, take Christina Aguilera and her second CD. I think the first single off of that album TAAAAANKED (Dirrty). Didn’t sound like the rest of the album…really felt like an outlier and a STRANGE pick for the first single. Then she came out with “Beautiful”…and well…the rest is history.

I too think that David Cook can be HUGE…as in one of the biggest stars to come out of American Idol. I think he has the potential to be better than Daughtry. He has a better voice. Is better looking etc. But even with his level of potential, he still needs good songs/music to back it up. Light On is so not it.

I hope you are right. It didn’t happen the week of the single, IMO, because the guy from Billboard didn’t write it up. The Crush headlines originated from that. Plus, TI destroyed everyone that week, so that was the more compelling story. So I hope history repeats itself no matter who “wins” frankly. No matter how it gets written up, some members of a fanbase get their feelings hurt, and the craziness begins anew. And the weirdest thing about it is that BOTH Davids are doing very well. I mean, VERY well. Everyone should be happy with their guy right now, but still there are folks looking for reasons to pick apart the other, even in the middle of all the good news. Oh well. I just have to keep telling myself no matter how annoying it is, its just the internet community and it just doesn’t matter out in the real world. I am thrilled beyond belief for both of them, because they are both great guys who put out very good albums, and I see nothing but good things in both their futures. I just can’t for the life of me understand what there is to argue about. Anyway, lets just keep our fingers crossed. Give peace a chance, people! LOL.

In most cases that I can recall with AI’ers if a first single doesn’t do much if a 2nd single is released it gets even less promotion.

That will not happen here. He’s going to move a lot of albums, he has a proven history as a potential big seller, and so far they’ve been treating him like a real artist and not an Idol throwaway project. If LO really proves to be bad (and I’m not thoroughly convinced its a disaster, it IS growing, just slower than Idol people think it should) they will move on to another single.

  11. 61 littlepark Nov 19th, 2008 at 1:35 pm

I really, really want them to move onto the next single. From where the songs stand on iTunes, I guess “Bar-ba-sol” isn’t it. Maybe it could be saved for the third single, and get more male listeners? It’s dang catchy and cool.

  12. 62 elisad Nov 19th, 2008 at 1:37 pm

LOL, from where the songs stand on iTunes, I think I should not pick singles, no wonder labels never agree with me…

  13. 63 dulce Nov 19th, 2008 at 1:47 pm

Declaration should be the next single. Bar Ba Sol does not have a huge melodic hook (wanna know why pop goop like “Crush” does so well on the radio? It’s that hook…replace the lyrics and keep the hook…you’d still have a hit song). Declaration represents the album better. The third single should be one of the ballads. As to why Avalanche doesn’t get more love I will never know. It is one of the better songs on the album, has a better structure and tune. But I digress…I can see RCA picking something like “Mr Sensitive” for the third single.

  14. 64 cheese Nov 19th, 2008 at 1:55 pm

I think they should go with Come Back to Me (a plea to all the Idol fans who hated LO, lol) or Lie next and maybe go with Declaration or Heroes down the line. If there’s a big hit to be had on the album, I think it will be one of the “soft” songs (CBTM, Lie or Avalanche, which is my personal favorite of these 3).

I really do think that rock or alternative would play Bar-ba-sol if it were by anybody by David Cook.

ETA: FWIW, I just got my CD (yay) and the sticker mentions “the smash Light On” (pffffft), Lie, Come Back to Me and Life on the Moon. Is this in any way an accurate predictor of what the singles will be? (Did Archie’s CD come with a sticker?).

  15. 65 ianamy Nov 19th, 2008 at 2:06 pm

I don’t think Declaration should be Cook’s next single at all. For one thing, Miley’s Best of Both Worlds didn’t do much in Chr. As a pop single LO is much more suitable than Declaration. Feb probably is the better timing for releasing the single. They can use it in AI.

  16. 66 shell29 Nov 19th, 2008 at 2:09 pm

I don’t know if she’s going to have a monster week like T.I. did, but between her album and the sales of her two singles (#1 & #2 on iTunes, last I checked) Beyonce should have a very strong week. I really think the main focus will be on her and not “the Davids” (at least in the mainstream press, Idol-related blogs might be a different story), but we’ll see what happens.

  17. 67 leome Nov 19th, 2008 at 2:41 pm

I know the song has fans, I just think it’s a boat anchor. The numbers that David Cook pulled after the finale where astronomical.

I’m sorry, but I think we can’t expect him to do what he did back in May anytime soon. No one probably will. There were more than 30 million people watching that show… the buzz was at its max. But that was 6 months ago. Of course things change, people move on.
His appearences have had a huge impact on the song’s sales. Before SNL the song could hardly stay in the top 100, the airplay was less than Crush had in its first Itunes week. Since then the song has been holding and growing.
LO is doing good if we compare it to the general songs out there. But for the idol fandom everything has to be big and huge. No, it’s not a catchy pop song à la Crush, but in its niche LO is doing ok.
I’m not a fan of LO, I would have picked another single. I Just don’t think right now he needs another single, while the song is still living and going up.

  18. 68 dulce Nov 19th, 2008 at 2:54 pm

I know there has been some discussion on how Declaration and The best of Both Worlds have similar hooks. I just don’t think you can compare the two at all. Pop songs/pop-rock songs whatever can and often do utilize similar song/hook structures. Is the average listener going to hear both, make the connection, and then decide that Declaration isn’t worth listening too at all?

I don’t know if Declaration is destined for greatness, but it is one of the stronger singles on the album. Very catchy, something that you can blast out of your stereo easily. It can stand on its own.

As for the others….I know I’m alone in this, but I think LIfe On the Moon could be a HUGE single. The song that I think American Idol could use for their goodbye videos is “Heroes”…kind of a stretch, but it could be done…OR….god forbid they decide to use Light On.

  19. 69 cheese Nov 19th, 2008 at 3:14 pm

    HDD Predictions are up:

A double dose of Beyonce and her alter ego will grab the top spot on the HITS Album Sales chart next week, as her two-CD Music World/Columbia set, I Am… Sasha Fierce, will debut at #1 with 500-550k in sales, according to those hardy retailers who still have their doors open.

With a stunning appearance on Saturday Night Live last weekend, two hit singles in “If I Were a Boy” and “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)” and a starring role as Etta James in the upcoming Chess Records movie, Cadillac Records (and its accompanying soundtrack), Beyonce might as well be Sasha Claus.

The real tussle will be right below that for #2, as a debuting RCA/RMG’s David Cook and Roadrunner’s Nickelback go head-to-head with this week’s chart-topper, Big Machine’s Taylor Swift, in her second week. All look to be in the 300k range, mas o menos.

So it looks like he’ll be #2, 3 or 4, but have great sales. Yay!

  20. 70 shell29 Nov 19th, 2008 at 3:23 pm

As for the others….I know I’m alone in this, but I think Life On the Moon could be a HUGE single.

You’re not alone, I agree with you! I really think that song has the potential to do big things if it is ever released (on CHR as well as AC/Hot AC).

  21. 71 ozarka Nov 19th, 2008 at 3:24 pm

Deleted because Cheese beat me to the great news.

  22. 72 Trina Nov 19th, 2008 at 3:29 pm

OMG get the hell out of here!

  23. 73 mac Nov 19th, 2008 at 3:29 pm

Are you serious????? 300K? Woo HOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh My God!

  24. 74 Hazehel Nov 19th, 2008 at 3:29 pm

Woah! Perhaps 300K (do I believe that?) and still might not get into the top 3.

  25. 75 rockchalk Nov 19th, 2008 at 3:29 pm

Wait, what? 300K? That is roughly 2x what I was expecting. That is freaking fantastic. Go DC!!

  26. 76 cheese Nov 19th, 2008 at 3:33 pm

Ha! I saw Cook’s updated vibe-rater blurb saying he would be in the Top 5 and immediately thought: Crap! he only sold like 120K. Looks like a relatively huge week for the Top 4.

I hope he sells at least one copy more than Daughtry did.

  27. 77 Michelle Nov 19th, 2008 at 3:35 pm

Wow at the HDD prediction! But I am taking it with a grain of salt especially this early…still would be ecstatic at anywhere around 200k :D

  28. 78 tinawina Nov 19th, 2008 at 3:38 pm

I’m doing the happy dance. Woo-hoo!!!!

  29. 79 Lisa Nov 19th, 2008 at 3:45 pm

HDD’s prediction, is this from a sales sampling they did from various reseller’s?

I too will take this with a grain of salt. If it moves that much, great! If not, the world won’t end. Topping Beyonce, Nickleback & Twilight is a huge achievement and one to be proud of!

  30. 80 Hazehel Nov 19th, 2008 at 3:57 pm

OK, I’m going to pretend I haven’t read stephen’s post in the other thread. I’m not sure how to react to that.
