Jordin had a great week for downloads. I think many fans did that instead of buy the album. Add the dls to the album sales and you have a decent opening week but I don’t know if Clive & Co. see it that way.

They won’t see it that way because almost every album that gets released sees a boost in download numbers. Plus, you can’t add the two together; there are like apples and oranges. One costs 99cents and the other costs $10 . Finally, even if you do add the two together, she’s still the lowest selling Idol by a long shot.

They are probably spending a lot of money to get Top 40 airplay. The single should be selling.

In other news this week, the “Chipmunk Song” outsold “Break Anotha”. Blake did manage to outsell “Last Christmas” by that inspirational 80’s group Wham!

    Thank god for small miracles.

    Official BB nbrs for Jordin:
“Jordin Sparks, who was crowned the winner on “American Idol” earlier this year, starts at No. 10 with her self-titled 19 Recordings/Jive set, moving 119,000. It is the lowest start and smallest sales debut for any of the show’s winners on the tally.”

Very low numbers for Jordin, indeed. But somehow, I am not too surprised, or disappointed, or worried for her.

Jordin’s sales are a bit disappointing, especially considering she already had a top 20 hit on the Hot 100 from the album before it came out, but I think part of it is just the major drops the album market has had this year even compared to last year. You can’t really expect albums to sell over 300,000 copies in their first week any more unless it’s by a big already established star. I did expect her to sell about 200 though, not 120. But I think she has quite a few radio potential hits on the album, so I think her album will have legs, and I’m still predicting she’ll eventually go 2x Platinum.

By the way, this means that Blake will probably only do around 50-70 in the first week, because Break Anotha might catch on eventually, but he won’t have a hit yet when the album comes out.

I think part of it is just the major drops the album market has had this year even compared to last year.

Sure, it plays a small part in it, but it cannot account for such a large drop without other, more major, factors coming into play.

You can’t really expect albums to sell over 300,000 copies in their first week any more unless it’s by a big already established star.

Idol used to be able to make people a big star. Clive himself famously said in an interview that Idols should be able to sell 300-500K albums on their strength of the Idol winner title alone. After that, it’s up to the album and the singles to sell the album. Idols often roll out their album with no single or recently introduced singles. How bad would her numbers have been if she had not released a hit single?

I’m still predicting she’ll eventually go 2x Platinum.

I hope you are right, but I suspect that is a tad optismistic.

    Here is what
Ken Barnes has to say on the matter:

Jordin’s 119,000 first-week sales, according to Nielsen SoundScan, which landed her at No. 10 on the Billboard album chart, are not only the lowest for an Idol winner, but total less than half of the previous low. (Chart after the break, along with non-charting Idol details.) And, it came in a week when overall sales were up nearly 20%, a seasonal event that helped a number of other Idols increase their sales.

Kelly Clarkson “Breakaway” 10K (lw 3.7K)

Wow is this really right? It really jumped 6K ? Where did that come from? Christmas sales? lol.

  12. 12 jpfan Nov 28th, 2007 at 6:26 pm

Pickler in only about 40K albums away from outselling Taylor. Bucky has a shot at selling more than Kat. If Jordin hadn’t released the week of Black Friday her sales probably would have been around 90K. That is pretty bad for an Idol winner with a hit single.

    33 Daughtry “Daughtry” 43K (~50%; lw 22,707 ) Total: 3.33M (49)

I think it should be 90%. Nice bump from AMA. Who says AMA is insignificant? :smile1_tb: It’s not Oprah, but still… :laughing_tb:

I hope Jordin doesnt end up having a Rhianna career sales wise….hit sinlges , medicore album sales :(

I’m still predicting we see Jordin on the Disney Channel - maybe in the next High School Musical. And that is not a bad thing.

And - nice sales for Elliott’s Xmas CD! Not bad, not bad at all!!!
