For those following the Josh Grobin sales phenomena:

    Groban’s ‘Noel’ Makes Chart History

    - first Christmas album to hold #1 spot on the BB200 for four consecutive week (in the BBs 51 year history)
    - ties Elvis Presley for the most weeks at #1 for a Christmas album (Elvis’s 4 weeks were not consecutive)
    - first album since No Doubt’s “Tragic Kingdom” to hold #1 for four weeks and increase in each of those 4 weeks (Dec 1996)

“Noel” this week has become the biggest selling album of 2007 just edging out HSM2 (2.8 million compared to 2.7 million).

Interesting factoid: Regardless of whether “Noel” or “HSM2″ ends up the year as the best selling album, the winner will have the latest release date on any year’s top-unit title since Nielsen SoundScan launched in 1991 (October 2 for “Noel” or August 14 for “HSM2).

I think this just illustrates how amazing Josh’s sales have been (and the HSM crew are no slouches either. They almost pulled off two years with the best selling album). Sorry, it’s not Idol related, but I thought these were some interesting sales stats.

Yes, those are very interesting and stats for Groban. I’m happy about any album that sells like that in 2007, since I didn’t think it was possible for a physical album to sell nearly 3 million in a matter of two months anymore.

I agree. I think it’s great. Another little update: RIAA just certified Josh Groban’s “Noel” 4xPlatinum. Unbelievable in this current market.

Kelly Clarkson “My December” has also been certified Platinum (earlier this week, it was announced Carrie Underwood’s “Carnival” has been certified 2xplat)

  4. 4 bean99 Dec 19th, 2007 at 10:27 am

Good for him although I think he can be thankful for the benefit of being on Oprah. I seem to be one of the few that isn’t buying this cd.

  5. 5 jpfan Dec 19th, 2007 at 10:28 am

I’m a little surprised that Josh Groban was ceritified 4XPlat since he’ll probably end the current Xmas season at around 3.4 or so. Does anybody buy a Xmas album in January? Obviously, by the time next year comes around, he’ll sell his 4 million plus albums. It’s still great that a trained singer can move those units.

  6. 6 Daughtry_AJ Dec 19th, 2007 at 10:30 am

I’m glad that My December at least went Platinum, I may not be a huge fan of the album, but with all the grief she’s gotten for it, at least she can say its Platinum. Meanwhile looks like Carnival Ride is well on its way to keeping up with the 6x Platinum cert of Some Hearts. The 2nd single hasn’t even been released yet and its double Platinum.

  7. 7 jpfan Dec 19th, 2007 at 10:44 am

Kelly Clarkson is selling about 5K albums a week of My December and supposedly sales slow down in January. At this rate if will take 60 weeks for the album to actually sell platinum. I’m horrible at math and probably the album will eventually sell but again this seems pretty early in the game to certify it platinum. Sorry, I realize that this is based on shipments. So great that the stores have put in the orders for her album but it’ll be awhile before they actually sell them.

whats happened with blakes single numbers?

  9. 9 Kirsten Dec 19th, 2007 at 11:23 am

Good for him although I think he can be thankful for the benefit of being on Oprah.

Oprah certainly helps, but lots of artists go onto Oprah and few become the biggest selling album of the year (and only one has ever done it with being released in the last quarterof the year).

Each artist has their advantages and disadvantages. Josh did this without having a hit song on pop radio, with the late night talk shows dark and with decreased sales. Sure, Christmas CDs do well around the Christmas season, but they rarely do this well.

Here is the previous list of Top 10 Christmas Albums prior to this week (Josh is at 2.77M):
Christmas top 10 albums based on Soundscan All time list

    1. Miracles - The Holiday Album — Kenny G 7195
    2. These Are Special Times - Celine Dion 4838
    3. Merry Christmas - Mariah Carey 4801
    4. Christmas In The Aire - Manheim Steamroller 3683
    5. Fresh Aire Christmas - Manheim Steamroller 3548
    6. Manheim Steamroller Christmas - Manheim Steamroller 3391
    7. Now That’s What I Call Cristmas! vol. 1 3215
    8. When My Heart Finds Christmas - Harry Connick Jr. 2970
    9. Faith: A Holiday Album - Kenny G 2735

whats happened with blakes single numbers?

He’s probably not in the top 200 anymore.

On iTunes pop singles chart, “No Air” is No. 29, which makes it No. 142 on the Digital Tracks chart this week. “Break Anotha” and “How Many Words” are No. 44 & No. 88, respectively, which means that he’s probably too far down the chart to quality for an entry.

  11. 11 Kirsten Dec 19th, 2007 at 2:34 pm

He’s probably not in the top 200 anymore.

That could be true, but let’s wait until Ken releases numbers for the Idols in the top 200 later today.

Numbers are added to this thread as they arrive. Typically, we get the top 50 SS downloads in the morning (and the person who leaks them throws in extra songs that he thinks are interesting). Then, we start seeing some of the top 10 album numbers in the mid-morning because BB puts out their chart alerts. Around 4 pm, Ken Barnes at Idol Chatter puts out the rounded numbers for the top 200 downloads and albums (plus any Idol selling more than 100). SS numbers for the BB 200 will sometimes leak between Thursday and Friday.

Of course, sometimes, things leak earlier.

I just thought people might like a run-down of the reason behind the hodge-podge arrival of numbers each week in this thread. I appreciate people bringing numbers from wherever they find them. We don’t have any label sources or insiders so this is really just a collection area for Idol numbers.

BTW I don’t credit the great source that’s out there for SS leaks because they’ve received cease and desist orders in the past, so I don’t want to draw anymore attention to them. Most internet SS number hounds already know where that website source is (it really is a treat to get those SS numbers).

Ruben Studdard dropped from J Records?

I hope this isn’t true. Rumor is American Idol’s 2nd season winner, Ruben Studdard was dropped from J Records today due to poor record sales of his last disc. If it is true, Ruben will be picked up by another label pronto. He is truly a talented brother who is deserving of all the accolades he has received.

Here’s an email I received from a loyal reader:

    Hey Sandra,
I just wanted to let you know my brother tours as a background singer for Ruben Studdard and he was just informed today that Ruben was dropped by J Records. The sales were just too bad from his last album. He has only sold 234,000 copies.

WOW! HDD is predicting that Josh will move another 700K this week and outpace Mary J Bliges new album (600K).

If true, that will give Josh the most weeks at number 1 for a Christmas CD and almost 3.5 million in sales in just a few months. Incredible.

Sorry, I can’t even name one song this dude sings (The First Noel?), but that’s impressive!

Normally, Christmas CD sales slow down dramatically the week before Christmas, but there is no stopping this CD. I’m sure Crack Marketing Teams everywhere are taking note (who am I kidding? They are all getting drunk at office parties, wearing Christmas bows on their heads and singing REALLY bad karaoke).

  14. 14 Kirsten Dec 19th, 2007 at 4:38 pm

Ken Barnes is reporting the following:

Bucky, by the way, can be congratulated for being named No. 1 new country artist by Country Aircheck, the format’s competitor to Radio & Records/Billboard.

    Congratulations to Bucky!

That could be true, but let’s wait until Ken releases numbers for the Idols in the top 200 later today.

    Okay, Tony was right.

Since Elliott sold more of his Xmas CD this week than last I think the -51% is a mistake. There should be a plus there. Christmas seems to be the time of year they drop idols. I think Bo was dropped around this time last year. Who knows what will happen next year.

    Congrats to the Buckster.

Since Elliott sold more of his Xmas CD this week than last I think the -51% is a mistake.

Ooops. Sorry. Cut and paste error. We didn’t get a percentage change for that album this week, so I didn’t update anything. Fixed now.

Christmas seems to be the time of year they drop idols. I think Bo was dropped around this time last year.

It’s how Clive says “Merry Christmas!” “You’re Dropped! Security, escort him to the door and make sure he doesn’t steal any of the decorations off the Christmas tree in the lobby. I’m not made of money, you know”.

  17. 17 jpfan Dec 19th, 2007 at 5:58 pm

I guess Rueben is the first Idol winner to get dropped. Nice work Clive to do it around Christmas. Very classy. I think I’m feeling better and better that Elliott is not at the mercy of evil C.

  18. 18 Paula Dec 19th, 2007 at 7:55 pm

Was Reuben even promoted? I don’t think I’ve ever seen his CD anywhere, although I haven’t looked for it, but I do look to see what Idols’ albums are displayed.

Jordin’s single Tattoo has reached #8 on Billboards Hot 100 making it the highest debut single from an Idol winners album . it passes Kelly’s Miss Independent and Ruben’s Sorry 2004 which both peaked at #9.

Secrets of Josh Groban’s monstrous sales: good voice for the genre, being on Oprah, CDs stacked at every Wal-Mart check-out register.. He is unstoppable.

    YAY Josh!

The CMTs can take as many notes as they want. He’s a fine singer singing pretty Christmas songs. He apparently has great management and no dirt under his fingernails (yet).

I saw the video on the end cap while browsing and picked it up back in October. Didn’t even know it was out. That’s probably how a lot of his first few weeks of sales when before he started hitting the national shows.

  23. 23 Margaux Dec 20th, 2007 at 11:28 am

Were any other major artist, non-exclusive Christmas CDs, released in 2007? Is there a Billboard list ranking only holiday CDs? If so, what is #2 on that list?

I wonder if Josh G’s CMT threatened to break knee caps of anyone else even thinking of doing a holiday release.
