Here is what Ken Barnes reports about Digital sales this week on his Listen Up blog:
The big news is that a record 42.9 million digital tracks were downloaded during the past week (which included Christmas Day, when people unwrapped their new iTouch-type gadgets and gift cards). That’s 43% higher than the previous record total, 30.1 million (set last Christmas week). Flo Rida’s Low led the charge, selling 467,000 copies, also a record. All but one song in the top 50 at least doubled its sales.
Album rankings:

11 7 CARRIE UNDERWOOD Carnival Ride
28 21 DAUGHTRY Daughtry
40 28 JORDIN SPARKS Jordin Sparks
65 55 CARRIE UNDERWOOD Some Hearts
76 44 BLAKE LEWIS Audio Day Dream
Carrie Underwood (7-11 on the chart; 72,000, down from 216,000 in sales). I think Daughtry sold around 43k.
Any word on Jordin and Blake’s numbers?
We have download numbers for Jordin (very impressive), but no word on her album numbers yet.
We can guess at Blake’s album numbers. According to BB, his sales dropped 64% from last week (BB said he sold 55K last week). So, he’s looking at about 19.8K in sales during this sales period. Call it 20K
Jordin sold less that 43K so maybe somewhere in the 30s. Her album sales may be mediocre compared to the excellent downloads. This is an ongoing problem for artists who get big Top 40 hits like Rihanna and Timbaland.
Daughtry’s sales were posted on Pulse.
43,600 sold last week; 3,618,000 to date.
That’s a 60% drop, which is not bad, considering he got a 80% bump the week before.
Blake “Titties in Your Mouth” Lewis already fell below 20K and the post-holiday sales slump hasn’t officially started yet? I don’t see anything that can slow down the free-fall….
> That’s a 60% drop
A very unmerry, unbirthday to him.
With a 43.2% average drop this week, a lot of CDs fell Through the Looking Glass. Next week, there will be very few Cheshire Cat grins because sales across the board will likely be even more grim.
Daughtry in his second year outsold the winner of S6 last week.
Finally, comprehensive numbers from Ken Barnes!
Idol sales: Late but firmly packed with data
My apologies — the entire day has been spent drowning in numbers from Nielsen SoundScan’s year-end report. I will add Idol-related highlights to the end of this post, but first, the regular weekly Idol sales report (expanded to include last week’s numbers, when I was gone).
When we last left Carrie’s Carnival Ride, it was No. 9 on the Billboard album chart, having sold 138,000. The next week (Dec. 17-23, prime holiday shopping), it jumped to 7 with 216,000 sold. This past week, incorporating the record industry’s traditional post-Christmas crash, it fell to 11 with 72,000, a somewhat-larger-than-usual 67% (compared to most of the albums in the top 20). Total is now 1.69 million.
Daughtry had been 28, moved to 21 before Christmas with an 80% increase to 107,000, and then fell back down to 28 this week, dropping 59% to 44,000. Total is now 3.62 million.
Jordin had fallen 26-28 but jumped to 89,000 sales, a 44% boost. Now she’s at 40, having sold 36,000, a 59% drop. Total is 407,000, which means gold is at least in sight.
Carrie’s Some Hearts climbed 59-55 just before Christmas, selling 47,000 (up 50%), then fell to 65, selling 23,000 (down 51%). Total is 6.19 million.
Blake was one of the few albums the week before Christmas to suffer a sales decline (albeit a minor one, 4.5%), to 55,000, which dropped him 32-44 on the chart. Now he’s down to No. 76, selling 20,000, a 64% drop.Total stands at 231,000.
Kellie had leaped from 200 to 169, selling in the mid-13,000s, a 69% jump. Now, however, she’s off the chart again, selling 6,000. Her total is 698,000, meaning she should pass Taylor next week.
Making a surprise return to the chart this week is Elliott’s Sounds of the Season, which must have snagged a lot of last-minute pre-Christmas buyers. It sold about 11,000 (up from 8,800) to return at No. 123, bringing its total to 56,000.
Off-chart Idols (except Kellie, obviously) and year-end tidbits follow.
I’ll cram two weeks’ worth of sales info into a quick, efficient format:
Kelly, Breakaway: 6,000 this week (14,000 last week; 5.93 million total)
Kelly, My December: 5,000 (11,000; 737,000 total)
Elliott: 5,000 (11,000; 482,000 total)
Clay (Christmas album): 3,000 (8,000; 1.4 million total)
Clay (Thousand): 400 (800; 522,000 total)
Clay (All Is Well EP): 200 (400; 52,000 total)
Bucky: 2,500 (7,000; 316,000 total)
Bo: 1,500 (4,000; 36,000 total)
Fantasia: 1,300 (2,000; 501,000 total — a milestone passed there)
Mandisa: 1,300 (3,000; 66,500 total)
Mandisa (Xmas): 200 (500; 2,800 total)
Katharine: 800 (1,200; 365,000 total)
Taylor: 400 (700; 699,000 total)
Constantine: 300 (500; 23,000 total)
Ruben: 100 (200; 236,000 total)
Paris: 100 (100; 20,000 total)
Kimberley (Based): 100 (200; 17,000 total)
Kimberley (Xmas): 100 (200; 2,200 total)
Before I get to the year-end standings, Stormiya had a request in about album sales totals for certain more obscure Idols, so here goes.
Jim Verraros, Rollercoaster: 4,000 (rounded, of course)
Ayla Brown, Forward: 3,000
Jon Paul Lewis, Stories From Hollywood: 1,000
Nikki McKibbin, Unleashed: not found in SoundScan system
Lisa Leuschner, Reality: Found in SoundScan system but sales are what the company refers to as “negligible,” which means not yet in three figures.
> OK, year-end stats. Top 200 albums for 2007 list.
No. 5 for the year: Daughtry, 2.50 million (for calendar year 2007)
12. Carrie (Carnival), 1.69 million
17. Carrie (Hearts), 1.54 million
59. Kelly (December), 737,000
99. Elliott, 482,000
119. Jordin, 407,000
140. Katharine, 365,000
152. Kellie, 346,000
178. Bucky, 316,000
193. Kelly (Breakaway), 290,000
Ten out of 200 — very impressive. Year-end download stats will be noted in the next post, up tomorrow morning
Wow! Pickler is passing Taylor next week? Who could have seen this coming! Talk about adding insult to injury…
Lots of people. People have been pointing out that this day will come since last summer. It’s a simple matter of seeing that Kellie was selling thousands of CDs while Taylor was selling in the 100s. It’s a Grade 4 math problem.
Well, I suppose at least his precentages were good. A 75% increase followed by a 43% decrease. Better than what many experienced. These are such trying weeks. LOL
I heard an unconfirmed rumor that he actually sold 44 copies one week at some point last year. LOL. Imagine the huge jump percentage-wise he got the week after. BTW, it was from someone who had access to SS numbers. Clive & Co. couldn’t have been amused by numbers like that..
> I heard an unconfirmed rumor that he actually sold 44 copies one week at some point last year.
Ken Barnes can’t report numbers less than 100 (and NO, Ken does not round up everything, the dude knows how to round) and Ken has always reported sales stats for Taylor, so this rumour is unlikely like so much of the “Insider” information you find on the internet.
Where are you going with this? Are you trying to start a fan war? Please start it elsewhere on another board.
People can’t buy what’s not in the stores, and the majority of buyers don’t buy on-line.
Kat’s “dead” album might not be selling super big numbers, but it’s increased like 7 weeks in a row now. Good for Kat!! Not one single has been played from her in months.

While Kat doesn’t get played on the radio, she’s had some high profile TV appearances lately. They usually sell a few units. Anyway, good for her.
Elliott’s Xmas CD which is #123 on the BB200 is sold only in Target. Taylor Swift with a similiar CD has out sold him by about 30K (if my numbers are right). She’s the biggest star in country right now. The fact that he can keep up in Xmas sales with a star like Taylor Swift makes me believe he is a potential platinum selling artist. He never has the blow out week but sells thousands of albums on a consistent basis.
Combining the two albums, he sold 36K units in two weeks of one album sold only in one store and another that’s almost a year old. And that’s without any promotion.
