Idol Season 7 Top 8 IGB Week - What Should the Idols Sing?

In celebration of Idol Gives Back, the Top 8 will be singing “Inspirational” songs Tuesday night. Yes, amidst all of the IGB hype, there is still a competition going on!

This week’s theme is the broadest yet, and can mean just about anything, really. I put together a list of the songs I’d like the Idols to sing. What songs “inspire” you? Post your thoughts in comments!

PS: Next week–Mariah Carey mentors.

My picks are after the Jump…

  • Brooke White - “Let the River Run” by Carly Simon
  • Jason Castro - “Shelter” by Ray LaMontagne
  • Syesha Mercado - “Ooh Child” by the 5 Stairsteps
  • Michael Johns - “Heroes” by David Bowie
  • David Cook - “What’s So Funny ’bout Peace Love and Understanding” by Elvis Costello (thanks for the suggestion, cheese!)
  • David Archuleta - “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother” by the Hollies
  • Kristy Lee Cook - “You Light Up My Life” by LeAnn Rimes
  • Carly Smithson - “Beautiful Day” by U2

All I know is that I will vote for him (which I would do anyway) solely for the reason that he’s not doing a dreary ballad.

    Yep!

Thank goodness for diversity, right? I like ballads in general, but simple pretty ones. Not overwrought shouting fests with runs and riffs. Should be an interesting night.

ETA: “Yep” was meant as an agreement about ballads. My votes will prolly go to Jason unless something weird with the universe happens.

The universe will be aligned just fine, pj, vote Jason, JASON, JASON

MN Sue, you know I will. LOL.

Anyone know if it’s a crazy four hours of voting like last year? *hopes not*

I hope we get the extra hours. My work schedule keeps me from voting and from chat. Something tells me Jason might need me this week.

It’s too much to hope for but I think Brooke can follow in the footsteps of Theresa Sokyrka who sang an amazing cover of Good Mother by Jann Arden.

Oooooh, that would be a great song for her.

Was Sarah McLachlan’s “Angel” mentioned anywhere up thread? I think Brooke or Carly would sound lovely on that.

Why do I have the feeling that Kristy will sing Amazing Grace…I should be wrong coz’ she would ruin that song!

I was totally thinking of I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing for David Cook..

Carly could take on any big song as she has the pipes for it!

Voices That Care for David Archuleta!

I don’t have any other inspirational songs in mind (I’m not even sure if I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing is inspirational, but it doesn’t matter since we already know that Cook is not singing that)

Okay - I’ve got some wacky, “uplifting” choices. They’ll never use them , but here goes:

Syesha - “Fame” - (the Irene Cara song)
Carly - “Beautiful” - Carole King
Brooke - “Save the Country” - Laura Nyro
Kristy - “Put a Little Love in Your Heart” - Jackie De Shannon (cheesy)
David C - “Spirit in the Sky” - Norman Greenbaum
or “People Get Ready” - Curtis Mayfield
David A - “Good Morning Starshine” (from Hair/Oliver) (real cheesy)
    or “People Get Ready”
Michael Johns - “Maybe I’m Amazed” - Paul McCartney
    or “People Get Ready”
Jason Castro - “I Can See Clearly Now” - Johnny Nash
    or “People Get Ready”

It’s getting too late at night to think about this…..I’m out of “inspiration”

Rosalee, you don’t want any of the guys to sing “People Get Ready”, do you?? :)

Inspirational songs will all be compared to the originator unfortunately. For Andrew Lloyd Webber week:

Brooke White - “You must love me” by Madonna
Jason Castro - “No matter what” by Boyzone
Syesha Mercado - “Memory” from Cats
Michael Johns - “What’s the Buzz” from JCS
David Cook - “Judas’ Song” from JCS
David Archuleta - “Love Changes Everything”
Kristy Lee Cook - “Whistle down the wind” by Tina Arena
Carly Smithson - “Tyre Tracks and Broken Hearts” by Bonnie Tyler (I really wish Amanda was around to do this instead…on her album maybe…)

Has anybody else heard that Kristy Lee Cook is singing “Live Like You Were Dying” by Tim McGraw? Supposedly she was considering it. I don’t know if she followed through. If so it would be a great song choice for her. KLC usually is good on song choice, so if she didn’t pick that I’m sure she picked something else good.
