The Summer Poptarts tour has just been announced. Me? I love the big ole’ cheesy summer Idols tour. I go to as many concerts as I can, and I although I realize it’s quite pathetic, it’s also really really fun. According to Ian Pirie, head of 19 Recordings US,
“What struck us about this year’s group was the depth of the talent, and we think they’ll each pull in their own fan base,” says Iain Pirie, head of 19 Recordings U.S., which organizes the tour.
“As opposed to hearing duets and trios sing, this year it’ll be more about the individuals. We’ll give them the space and freedom to do their own set. Think of it as coming to see 10 mini-concerts.”
It appears they are going back to the Season 4 and 5 format, highlighting individual rather than group performances, rather than like Season 6 which was like one long pointy pose. Personally, I love the group numbers, I hope they don’t completely give that up in this summer’s format.
The 49-date tour begins in Glendale, AZ on July 1st, makes it’s way East, South and then winds up in Tulsa, OK on September 13. Of course, there is always the possibility that more dates will be added later.
Check to see if the tour is coming to your city….After the jump…

Hurrah ! The tour is coming to Kansas City for the first time ever - and I will be there for sure!!!!!
MJ- Is the tour considerably shorter this year than in previous years??? I thought is usually ran until the very end of Sept. I think this year will be a better turn out than last year. Wonder if they will add dates like they have in years past.
The past two year’s it’s been about 60 dates. They added more last year and the year before, but they usually wait to see how it sells.
Since last year was kind of a wash-out they may not be scheduling as many dates.
Sigh. So not much of the cheesy group number goodness then. And this group is actually FUN in the cheesy group numbers. Plus I liked actually seeing the contestants in both halves of the show last year, whereas in season 5, I could have skipped the whole middle part of the show, since I mainly wanted to see Mandisa/Ace and then the second half with Taylor, Elliott, and Chris. Oh well.
I’ll be at the Tampa show. That’s all I know for sure.
ETA: Dante, KC will basically be David Cook’s hometown show too. I’m a jellus h8r. :)
Thanks, MJ.
I’m glad that they are going back to the format with more solos. As a Melinda fan, I did not bother going to the concert last year because she only had one solo. She was Top 3 and deserved better than that, IMO.
People could not take their normal rest room breaks and shopping breaks when their least favorites were performing because they may have been paired with their favorites.
After listening to the group numbers each Wednesday night, I guess TPTB realized that more of those on the tour would be tragic.
They aren’t showing the south much love this year.
Thanks MJ.
Uhhhh…Sarah…we need to talk… :)
OMFG!!! Finally a concert here in Tulsa! I am SO there! I was hoping that since David Cook lives in Tulsa that it would come here this year. Count me as one very happy camper.
Sarah - No wonder the tour is coming to KC - duh! I didn’t even think of that. You are welcome to come visit
I am a wild woman at concerts!
Oh bloody hell, I’m gonna have to fight peoples for primo tickets to D.C., the closest stop for me? OMG doomed
See ya there, cheese! Tell me the color and I’ll bring the glowsticks!
dante, you need to come to chicago. just sayin’ :-)
Wow!!! A couple of days between Tampa and Houston–Hope that means that they will be staying in Houston for a couple of days :D
They may have competition though - quite a few of the non-finalists have started their own tour, which is starting in Tulsa in May 9 (they are trying to book dates now).
Ugh, I hated the season 4 concert format.
It appears, they’re doing the new Pru center in Newark this year instead of Continental Airlines Arena. I’ve heard the place is great but I’ve yet to go. Unfortunately, my nieces now live in Houston so I need to find some other pre-teen girls to accompany me as cover, LOL.
Aww, they’re going back to the mini-concerts format? Where someone who sings in the first half for 10 minutes won’t be seen until the last few minutes of the show? That’s disappointing.
But don’t get me wrong, I’ll totally go this year. And if any of my local radio stations give away M&G passes, I will glue myself to a phone and listen to Top 40 regurgitated barf until I win some. There’s no going back once to regular Idol tour stuff once you do the M&G, even if it is a 2 minute rush-job.
They aren’t coming to Maine
I’m going to have to go to ManchVegas again on a Sunday night…. urgh! I’m getting too old for late nights!
No New York City? Damn. Well, it’s not like I could’ve gone anyway…
The tour ends where Cookie was living prior to Idol? That’s pretty interesting. I’ll bet anything the venue is going to be littered with David Cook posters and loads of screaming fans, heh.
BUMMER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They’re not coming to Maine this year!!!
Instead of a half hour drive, it’ll be a 2 1/2 hour drive!!!!!!
I hope they’re not basing it on last year’s turnout which could have been lousy based on the fact that the whole season was lousy.
Kind of interesting that no Alabama venues are booked. I’d like to think the shabby way that AI treated Taylor is the reason they feel a Birmingham concert would not be supported. Didn’t Bham have a poor showing last year?
Denver is consistently snubbed, despite its position as a major metropolitan area that isn’t really close to another one. They only came here for Ace during Season 5, and even that was added late.
The big gap between Salt Lake (guess they’re doing it at the E Center instead of EnergySolutions Arena, formerly the Delta Center) and Kansas City gives me hope. Heck, it doesn’t have to be the Pepsi Center. They could do it at Magness Arena on Denver University or even the Coors Events Center in Boulder.
But Denver should NOT be consistently snubbed as it is. Let’s hope for more dates.
Hisaki, Newark is just a short train ride from NYC. And the new venue is right by the train station.
Yes it did. My SIL and I were pretty much in one section almost by ourselves. Guess that’s why they’re not coming back. I’m completely bummed. No Michael and David C. for me. **sniff**
What, no Milwaukee?
i am so upset that they kind of skip over any deep south states!! no b’ham, no new orleans?!?!? sniff….
