Idols in the Mags

David Cook and Kristy Lee Cook - Photo from the March 24 TV Guide

This week’s clips….after the Jump!

TV Guide (March 24) has pictures of the Idols photo-booth style taken during the Top 12 party.

US Weekly (March 31) features a spread comparing the Idols to well-known musical artists. Jason Castro to Bob Marley and Ray Lamontagne? It’s kind of useless. David Archuleta (Joe Jonas) and Brooke White (Carly Simon) are orominent in the spread:

I have a good caption for the pic: David- “I can’t believe she’s still here either!”

Interesting. US compares all the other Idols* to greats in the industry (Carly Simon, Janis Joplin, Ray LaMontagne, Whitney, Donny, etc) except for David A who gets compared to one of the Jonas brothers?

Yep, they are definitely trying to find a Disney kid this year. No offense to the Jonas brothers, but I couldn’t pick them out of a line-up if they were the only two in the line-up. I was expecting comparisons to other teen age hearthrob greats (and when they mentioned the Mormon connection, I expected it to be Donny Osmond…hey, you could do worse than Donny in the sales department)

    * Well, the other exception is David Cook who wants to be compared to OLP, but can’t seem to shake the Daughtry comparisons. It’s like dog poo on his shoe. He just can’t scrape that off. Other than the fact that both are “rockers” on Idol, there are no comparisons (I prefer DC to CD). But, I will grant that he could do worse than matching Chris’s sales success.

As for the People magazine spread:
    - Is Kristy teaching David Cook how to pop his eyes like she does when she’s singing? Just say “No” to that
    - Why does poor David A always get paired with Carly for the photoshoots? It’s creepy. She looks like his Mom and she’s always hanging all over him. Plus, in that shot, it looks like the Geisha has a bit of a moustache
    - Score for Chikezie getting two pictures in the photo spread when some got none. He’s usually one of the forgotten Idols (BTW the top picture features his “Either drink it or toss it” face)

oh and i forgot to add- the US Weekly comparisons?????- clearly it is an IMAGE based comparison. Just cuz david archuleta is cute and young and has brown hair, they compare him to a jonas brother…he US WEEKLY, how about comparing them on what makes them famous- THEIR VOICES!- there is zero comparison there. ANd jason castro to bob marley? oh i get it…they both have dreads! Duh!- but ray lamontagne has a much much better voice than castro IMO. but jason has only been singing for a couple years so i understand. still, way to go US Weekly..you know i’d like to punch the stupid ppl who don’t watch AI and feel like they have the ability to write an article on the show regardless. grrrr, let me wrtie. please.

I think David C is compared to Chris D because of the rocker voice and also mixing up songs to make them his sound like Chris did. I think the only reason they picked Michael Hutchence is that the judges mentioned it (or was it only Randy). Carly Simon and Janis Joplin were obvious choices.

haha, ok i stopped reading when i saw “Kristy the next Leanne Rhymes”…lmao

I’m pretty sure the comparisons are based on their cited influences on the official site, with a couple of exceptions. Like Jonas Brothers. The Bob Marley thing? Just the dreads.

That ultra cool version of Gnarls Barlkey’s Crazy from Jason on youtube? Well, that’s a copy of Ray LaMontagne’s version.

  7. 7 Kirsten Mar 21st, 2008 at 9:32 pm

also mixing up songs to make them his sound like Chris did.

I guess that’s true. They are both accused of stealing other people’s arrangements. LOL.

Just so long as Jason doesn’t start acting like Ray in concert. Dude has issues. (Oh, and Hot Dave, if you are reading, Fergie sucks! LOL)

I just hope Jason doesn’t drunkenly approach Ray after a concert and sing for him. *waves at Hot Dave though I doubt he’s lurking*

And while I like David Cook, this is why he is compared to CD. He studied Daughtry. And the argyle. Don’t miss the argyle.

Well, I would pay good money to see little cutie-patootie sugarpie Ramiele Malubay sing some bawdy Lily Allen songs - LOL!

LOL, Kirsten. That’s pretty much the dark side of American Idol. It’s like a bad rash that afflicts the performers throughout the Spring and summer and finally goes into remission in September only to flare up later when they’re trying to drop albums and establishing a musical identity. It’s like…shingles in people who’ve been infected with chicken pox.

No offense to the Jonas brothers, but I couldn’t pick them out of a line-up if they were the only two in the line-up.

Ohhh Kirsten…if only I could be you. I have a 10 year old. I can tell you the Jonas Brothers full names, birthdays, how tall they are, their favorite songs, you get the picture. Anyway, they are an amazing phemomenon that those of us with young girls are unlikely to escape. Last Tuesday night, I took my daughters to their sold out concert at the Richmond Coliseum - 9000 seats. We spent an hour in the merchandise line. If idol is looking for a disney-like idol, I understand why. I cant speak to longevity but it is no telling how much money they’re raking in right now.

Oh and hee… there are three of them - Nick, Joe and Kevin.

I missed two pages of the Photo Booth! I’m putting them up now.

LOL. I’m currently in the dinosaur phase. I’m willing to bet that stepping on Jonas Brothers memorabilia in the middle of the night isn’t nearly as painful as stepping on a stegosaurus (though I might feel differently when my kid hits the tweaner years). At least if David A wins, you won’t have to do any research because you’ll already know the scoop.

Oh and hee… there are three of them - Nick, Joe and Kevin.

I’m SO out of the loop, I’m in a square.

I missed two pages of the Photo Booth! I’m putting them up now.

I was kind of wondering why Chikezie and Syesha were getting into People, but Brooke, Jason and Michael were not.

  14. 14 Kat Mar 21st, 2008 at 10:52 pm

YES! Ramiele Malubay is exactly like Lilly Allen because they have similar HAIR! OMG!!!111 I can’t believe I didn’t see it before!

    ::retch::

That picture on the front page would be cute if Kristy wasn’t in it. Heh. :)

  16. 16 Kirsten Mar 21st, 2008 at 11:22 pm

In that picture of Amanda and Michael, it looks like she’s about to poke his skin to check if he’s dead or not.

Given the facial expressions on the Idols faces, I have to wonder what the photographer was telling them to do/imagine/whatever.

    LOL at the Photobooth pictures!

    Thanks, mj! :)

Aww, David H looks so geeky in his pic. I LOVE it. Suddenly, I miss him. I’m so fickle. LOL.

No US Weekly! Chickezie is NOT the next Donny Hathaway! ***goes off to sulk***

  20. 20 gabam Mar 22nd, 2008 at 2:12 am

    Thanks, MJ.

Lu, Chikezie has stated that Donny Hathaway is one of his major influences. Remember, he sang, “I Believe To My Soul” on AI. I really did not like his version as much as Donny Hathaway’s and Elliott’s versions though.

The Chris Daughtry/David Cook comparison is interesting. Chris is one of my favorites from season 5. However, I just went back and watched both of their auditions. David’s voice is smoother, and the vocal quality is a tad bit better than Chris’, as his was more one-dimensional than David’s. It will be interesting to see how far he gets this season.

i like jason castro but c’mon Marley? why did they even put his picture there (there are others with dreads out there)
jason can only HOPE AND DREAM to be like Marley (big reverent sigh)
    JMO :)

thanks for the pics that was fun reading for the most part

Lu, I also have a 10 year old girl and I don’t know the Jonas boys; I couldn’t even name one song or recognize them on the radio if I heard them. See, it is possible to stay completely clueless!!! My daughter hasn’t caught the Jonas brothers fever either.

  26. 26 s0x_prisoner Mar 22nd, 2008 at 11:42 am

    Ooh… David A definitely > Joe Jonas.

How? How? Tell me your secret!!!! Tell me now!!! YOur daughter must not ever listen to Radio Disney - that cursed place!

    Ooh… David A definitely > Joe Jonas.

Sorry - totally disagree. Joe J can sing and he has amazing stage presence AND he is a cutey! David can sing better than Joe Jonas but Joe has it all over David on stage… good Lord - call the paramedics. I’m blogging about teenage boys.

    Kirsten LMAO -

I was just in the dinosaur phase and am now firmly entrenched in the Pokemon phase, after a short time in the Power Ranger phase. I used to think they were all just dinosaurs, who knew there was ankylosaurus, pachycephalsaurus, etc.
