Good job, Jason! Glad he told Ellen it would be ridiculous for him to have said, “Don’t Vote”.

On his sing-out, I guess the band wanted Jason to start doing Tambourine Man because there was silence.

So Jason said, “We’re doing the Marley one. What’s going on?”.
He needed the band to start with the horns. Which of course they did.

    That was surprising to me.
I have never been so carefree of people’s opinions that I’ve just been able to perform whatever I want in front of people who I’m sure are going to hate it!

    That kid’s amazing.

dancingqueen - I caught that, too. But he said it in a nice way so that it wasn’t really directed at Ellen personally. His mom taught him to be respectful.

Thanks, sciencefan, for the link. That interview is probably one of my favorites so far!

I must say that this is the first year that I’ve consistently enjoyed watching every contestant perform and do these post-show interviews. I really, really like this group of contestants this year, and for the first time I’m thinking about going to the tour.

Jason was fantastic on these, especially with Daydream. I’d buy an album of that!

  5. 55 vagabond May 12th, 2008 at 6:40 pm

The interviews were great - Jason didn’t look so much tired to me on Regis and Kelly as he did shy! LOL But he made a point of laughing about having to sing at 9 am on that radio interview (great link, sciencefan!) so maybe he WAS tired. :)

He’s doing a great job with the interviews, and his singing really has improved just from the beginning of the season. Hope he keeps on working with a vocal coach, and also hope it doesn’t take too long for a CD to come out - I want it!

Damn Preston, you need to call TPTB. I bet they will want to clone you!

  7. 57 gabam May 12th, 2008 at 7:23 pm

    Thanks, MJ.

I think that Jason did a great job with the interviews and with the singing. I’m very proud of him. A few months ago, he never would have been able to pull off the interviews so well. He’s a lot less shy now.

I also liked that our polite, respectful, Jason used the word “ridiculous” because I felt that way too.

Thanks for the link to the radio interview, Sciencefan. I’m glad that they liked Jason because they can be brutal when they don’t like someone. I love that Jason will readily and happily talk about how his brother sings better than he does. He sounds proud of little brother, Michael. His eyes also lit up when he was talking about his little sister in a TV Guide Idol Wrap segment.

Jason also sang “Daydream” at the end of Access Hollywood tonight.

This is surely one case where I would rather be ridiculous than right. I hope the people who actually matter think it’s ridiculous, too.

I think Jason is a really nice boy. There is certainly more reason to love him than to be upset or disappointed about. :)

Nobody wants to admit it….but….Jason C is NOT idol material, not good enough to make it to #1 or #2. Had he made it to #1 or 2, Simon would have walked off the show.

  10. 60 skylight1219 May 12th, 2008 at 9:05 pm

There are thousands of us who believe that Jason is idol material. And, so what if Simon walked off the show? Adios! And, he can take the other 2 stooges with him while he’s at it.

Really? What exactly is the barometer of “good enough”. Because, how I understand the rules is this - to get to 1 or 2 the only thing you need is more votes than 3 thru 24.

And - Simon is always spouting off about this or that or what horrendous outcome of horrific proportions will make him walk off the show. But he never GOES ANYWHERE. Because he’s being paid millions of dollars to be there. I’m not even sure Simon gives a rat’s a$$ who wins. All that sniping and making proclamations may all just be part of Simon’s tv character.

    Skylight, I second that emotion.

I heart how, after he was eliminated, Jason made physical contact with Randy (a repeated fist-to-fist greeting) and Pauler (a hug, of course), but he aimlessly strummed his guitar when Simon was talking to him. I think that sort of evasion is the Jason version of disrespect. I wish I could read Jason’s mind at that moment.

There is something fundamentally wrong with AI and getting rid of the so-called judges would only improve it.

Jason did a mini gig at the Presbyterian Hospital in NY today. It wasn’t made public, but, someone captured a video of him singing Daydream. Warning, it’s sideways, so, you’ll have to tilt your head to watch it. And, oh, by the way, his girlfriend is with him in NY.

    Amen Skylight!
Interesting observations Terrie. I wondered at the time if their words were for the camera but when Paula was interviewed afterwards, she seemed genuine in her admiration of him as a musician.

Randy said Hallelujah was the bomb but to me, he had many worthy performances not just that one. After thinking about the whole season, I would have to say that Dolly Parton night was my favorite night for all of them.
Because they all performed so great, I think Traveling Thru got overlooked.
I loved just about everyone’s rendition better than Dolly’s original - I think I bought more songs that night than any other!

  15. 65 4got May 12th, 2008 at 9:46 pm

I agree he’s not an ‘American Idol’ Idol and I say that as a huge compliment. He’s an individualistic musician who has managed to attract a LOT of fans on American Idol. That’s what matters in the end and if he’s able to deliver, his fans will buy his music.

Simon doesn’t know music, he is good at bitching and that’s what he’s paid for. I’m glad he didn’t become this years Simon-flavored bubble gum ready to be spat out once the flavor had been sucked out of it by the heavy AI chomping. Jason has the chance of a lifetime regardless of AI, it’s in his court now.

I think Simon felt let down by Jason. Just a REMINDER of Simon’s ‘You, like David, have just got ‘it’.’ Simon did recognise the ‘it’ factor that he’s so fond of. The ‘it’ factor got Jason a lot of fans so here’s to a bright future of music (in my ipod) for Jason. :drunk_tb:

Well, actually, Jason sang Memories pretty well. He was sick, and, stuffed up, but, his studio version is very nice. Makes me wonder if they hear the same thing I’m hearing. And, I don’t like ALW. He was snooty to Jason. By the way, I watched a series of you tube of “This is Your Life,” for Simon. Guess who one of his buddies is? Yep, ALW. It all makes sense now, doesn’t it?

Here’s a photo of Jason and his g/f in Central Park:

You are right Chicago - Sally he is NOT Idol material - Thank Goodness! He is better than that -

  18. 68 pj May 12th, 2008 at 9:55 pm

I don’t think Jason deserved to win AI, but I do believe he should be proud of his run and 4th place finish. He had plenty of good performances and a couple of great ones. His voice was my personal fave, and he’s one of 2-3 this year that I like their voice/sound enough that I’ll buy their album no matter what.

I’m glad he’s getting to spend some time with the gf in NYC! :)

  19. 69 4got May 12th, 2008 at 9:56 pm

Sky, I agree with you. ALfullofhimselfW was the worst thing that could’ve happened to Jason though AL’s love-fest with Brooke didn’t help Brooke either. Memories is one of my favorites despite the stuffed nose and it was hugely overlooked too. I’m sure that was a turning point for Jason - the meaness of the effing PTB in not mentioning his illness when they’d made a zillion excuses for everyone else before when they were ill.

I just think that’s all kind of wrong.

And, for emphasis, I’m not even going to argue what was posted.

All I’m going to say is, itunes.

  23. 73 purplesmile May 13th, 2008 at 2:19 am

Thanks for posting those, prime. :)

    I like this article:

Jason Castro - everyone’s favorite dreadhead, the guitar strumming, free spirit, with captivating eyes and a smile to make the female persuasion swoon and truth be told, the males too, didn’t exactly fit into the power Top 4 with Syesha, David Archuleta and David Cook. He felt he was the weakest singer of the remaining group; technically he might be right, but artistically, he ranked up there with David Cook, bringing something new and exciting to American Idol. While I enjoyed all of his performances, “Hallelujah”, was the break-through performance of the season, followed by “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and “Travelin Thru.” While the judges didn’t love last week’s selection of “Forever in Blue Jeans”, his studio version is my new favorite song! Paula was right on the money when she proclaimed how great his lower register is on this song.

As Ryan Seacrest started to read the results, I was holding on to the hope that Jason’s fans, the “Dreadheads” and the “Castronauts”, had power voted him into safety. I had voted with two phones and even my 68 year old mom had voted! When Ryan announced “Syesha you are safe”, leaving Jason on the stage to finish fourth in the competition, I swear I heard the refrain from “Travelin Thru”:

“Goodbye you little children, goodnight to all my friends
Farewell you lovely ladies and to all who knew me when
And I hope I’ll see you down the road, you meant more than I knew
As I was travelin, travelin, travelin, just travelin thru.”

(I realize this is the second time I’m posting (about) lyrics from this particular song, but I can’t help it. I love it. Heh.)

  24. 74 awilliams May 13th, 2008 at 2:29 am

I’m still waiting for the interview sans ‘don’t vote’ & ‘hair’ issues.

Yeah, that’s becoming really boring already. They could be asking him lots of other questions; life in Rockwell, construction studies, the music of his family. I’m kinda taken with music from Columbia and Venezuela right now (check out Columbian harpists).

Several comments have been made about Jason not being right to win AI. Fair enough but what exactly is the criteria to be American Idol, beyond the commercial aspect? While I enjoy the show for the new faces, I haven’t purchased any CDs by the winners except for Taylor Hicks.

I never cared for Barbra Striesand or Celine Dion, supposidly the best in popular music and hugely commercial. Just not my thing.

A good indie label with some coaching will help him find his way in the business. And FM radio (NPR?) seems right for him, once he gets going. Still early days yet for him.

  25. 75 carolina May 13th, 2008 at 2:33 am

purps, that article was pure Jason. That boy will do well.

  26. 76 skylight1219 May 13th, 2008 at 3:21 am

That song, Traveling Through, was so prophetic, wasn’t it? That article brought tears to my eyes, because like it or not, his presence WILL be missed this week on AI.

I like the line from Daughtry’s song, “Home.” Be careful what you wish for. Amen!

  27. 77 purplesmile May 13th, 2008 at 5:04 am

Jason did a mini gig at the Presbyterian Hospital in NY today.

I read a quoted post that Jason also sang Hallelujah at this event (upon request) and played the guitar on it even as he didn’t really know the chords.

That song, Traveling Through, was so prophetic, wasn’t it?

Yeah, I thought there was a reason Jason was so excited about Country week. If I remember correctly, there were reports that Jason had to draw for this song. I’m glad he won it.

Ok, I will get it out of my system once and for all and just post the whole dang thing.

    TRAVELIN’ THRU

Well I can’t tell you where I’m going, I’m not sure of where I’ve been
But I know I must keep travelin’ till my road comes to an end
I’m out here on my journey, trying to make the most of it
I’m a puzzle, I must figure out where all my pieces fit
Like a poor wayfaring stranger that they speak about in song
I’m just a weary pilgrim trying to find what feels like home
Where that is no one can tell me, am I doomed to ever roam
I’m just travelin’, travelin’, travelin’, I’m just travelin’ on

Questions I have many, answers but a few
But we’re here to learn, the spirit burns, to know the greater truth
We’ve all been crucified and they nailed Jesus to the tree
And when I’m born again, you’re gonna see a change in me

God made me for a reason and nothing is in vain
Redemption comes in many shapes with many kinds of pain
Oh sweet Jesus if you’re listening, keep me ever close to you
As I’m stumblin’, tumblin’, wonderin’, as I’m travelin’ thru

I’m just travelin’, travelin’, travelin’, I’m just travelin’ thru
I’m just travelin’, travelin’, travelin’, I’m just travelin’ thru

Oh sometimes the road is rugged, and it’s hard to travel on
But holdin’ to each other, we don’t have to walk alone
When everything is broken, we can mend it if we try
We can make a world of difference, if we want to we can fly

Goodbye you little children, goodnight to all my friends
Farewell you lovely ladies and to all who knew me when
And I hope I’ll see you down the road, you meant more than I knew
As I was travelin’, travelin’, travelin’, travelin’, travelin’ thru

I’m just travelin’, travelin’, travelin’, I’m just travelin’
Drifting like a floating boat and roaming like the wind
Oh give me some direction lord, let me lean on you
As I’m travelin’, travelin’, travelin’, travelin’ thru

I’m just travelin’, travelin’, travelin’, I’m just travelin’ thru
I’m just travelin’, travelin’, travelin’, I’m just travelin’ thru

Like the poor wayfaring stranger that they speak about in song
I’m just a weary pilgrim trying to find my own way home
Oh sweet Jesus if you’re out there, keep me ever close to you
As I’m travelin’, I’m travelin’, as I’m travelin’ thru

There. I’m happy now. Thank you, Dolly Parton. :p
