Jennifer Hudson BET Awards

Jennifer Hudson took home 2 awards at the BET awards Tuesday night, Best Actress and Best New Artist.

The show opened with Jennifer on stage singing her show stopping tune, “And I Am Telling You” from Dreamgirls.  During the second verse, Jennifer Holiday, the singer who originated the role on Broadway more than 20 years ago,  joined her on stage.

The room could barely contain these two big-voiced singers. Spectacular. And it’s nice to see Jennifer Holiday get some props.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Jennifer Hudson and it’s nice to see Jennifer Holiday actually get credit for something, but this was painful to listen to. Too much growling on Holiday’s part, too much screaming on Hudson’s part. Say what you want about Fantasia, but I can actually listen to her without changing the channel. I kept changing the channel when I heard this.

There were some good parts, but it was mostly just oversinging. I hate to bring up the Idol thing, but Hudson did the same thing on Idol that she does now. Sometimes she sounds good with a lot of control, then other times she just sounds a mess and that’s why she got voted off. I hope she doesn’t sound like this when her album come out.

I am not J-Hud’s biggest fan, but I loved this. And yay for Jennifer Holliday.

Thank you MJ, this was fantastic! It was a big voice blow out.
Yes, Holiday is growly, but thats her voice/style. I didn’t think Hudson was screaming beyond her voice controls at all. Loved it. Sure sometimes in these big voice duets they DO go out of the comfort scream zone for some, including myself..but didn’t feel that in this. I loved the fact of the orig. star and the movie Hudson did this, giving props to the orig. Classy. Good. Hey, at this point I think we should think of some of the idols on their own and not be comparing the seasons they were in contest factor. I was for Fantasia all the way and wanted her to win and still LOVE her the best, but also love Jennifer Hudson. They are similar but not the same.

I thought that was really great, and was really wonderful of BET to shed some light on someone who has kinda got pushed out of the way, the original Effie. Jennifer Holliday pulls a lot of faces but having watched a few broadway shows it fits, it really fits with the song as well.

Hudson is a class act. After just coming off an Oscar win she could have told BET she didn’t wish to share the stage.

Not only did she share, she paid homage to Holiday.

So much for those who have been trying to paint her as a diva.

Did anyone see the snippet they played on The Soup this week? They showed Jennifer Holliday’s part, with her weird faces and machinations.

I have to admit I’m in the camp that found her performance a bit over the top, even for a song that pretty much requires as much.
