Jordin Sparks’ Debut Album Drops Today

ETA: Check out comments for links to streams of the full CD…  There was no preview available online at any of the typical streaming sites like Yahoo and AOL. I still haven’t heard the complete album.

Plenty of reviewers have received advance copies. You can read their reviews: Ken Barnes, Philly.com, Boston.com, LATimes.com, and Entertainment Weekly

And a couple of interviews: USA Today and OK Magazine.

She’s getting generally good reviews. The consensus seems to be that the assembled crew of star producers have played to Jordin’s strengths, and that the results are formulaic, but pleasant.

Good luck Jordin! In a way it reminds me of Kelly Clarkson’s first album.

    tracks I liked:
Tattoo, One Step at a Time (Radio Disney anyone?), No Air, Shy Boy, Now You Tell Me, Young and In Love (the beginning sounds like Britney Spears), Next to You, Permanent Monday (the beginning sounds like Kelly Clarkson)

    not bad/no opinion:
Freeze, God Loves Ugly, This is My Now

    tracks I didn’t like:
Just for the Record, See My Side

Itunes has a 16 song album available for download and one of the bonus tracks is a fantastic song called Virginia is For Lovers. That song and Permanent Monday are my favorites.

I absolutely love “Permanent Monday.” Her voice is astounding and the arrangement is just breathtaking. Great song. “Worth the Wait” is nice too. It’s a solid first effort and should do quite well. Jordin has a beautiful voice, and you know, she’s only 17 (well for a few more weeks).

My prediction is that she’ll open with 175K. I just checked Amazon music sales rankings. Her CD is ranked #27 right now. If my memory serves me right, Daughtry was ranked #7 at Amazon around the same time, and Taylor almost cracked top 10. I don’t think she can come close anywhere near 300K. The buzz isn’t there and her fanbase is much smaller…

    BTW. Blake is ranked #165…

Amazon rankings have very little to do with actual placement on the charts or even sales. I believe the highest first week sales numbers ever from Amazon.com was Norah Jones last year with 30k. Most albums do less than 10k on Amazon first week.

I think Jordin will do between 150-200k just because it’s Black Friday. I think what might hurt her is the fact that Tattoo has been available for download for awhile on Itunes.
