Jordin Sparks Finishing Her Debut Album

MTV catches up with a very busy Jordin Sparks.  As soon as the Idol tour finished, she flew back to LA to get back to work on her debut album.  The CD drops November 20.

“It’s all very exciting, but also kind of scary, because it doesn’t give me a lot of time to finish it,” she said. “I’m out here in L.A., finishing up the record, and then they’re sending me back to New York to write some more songs, and then I’ll be coming back to master it and set the order for the songs. … I’m trying really, really hard to finish it.”

Oh, Jordin will finish the CD on time.  And she’ll release first.  Last year, Taylor Hicks took a few extra weeks to finish his album, allowing Chris Daughtry and Kellie Pickler to release their debut albums first.  Taylor suffered poor sales relative to prior Idol winners.  Could those few weeks of lost holiday sales hurt his momentum?  Did allowing other Idols to release first take the wind out of his sails, so to speak?  It’s hard to say, but I’m guessing that TPTB are not taking any chances this time.  Both Jordin and Blake will have their albums out before the end of November.

And I could be wrong, but I think it’s possible that both Jordin Sparks and Blake Lewis will outsell Taylor Hicks and Katharine McPhee.  Wouldn’t that be an interesting twist?

Sparks said her label has largely been hands-off when it comes to her debut disc, but that the process has been very collaborative and filled with compromise. Sparks has enlisted several producers for Jordin Sparks, including production team the Underdogs (Ne-Yo, Chris Brown); Robbie Nevil (who has worked on the “High School Musical” and “Hannah Montana” soundtracks); Norwegian duo Stargate (Nas, Rihanna); Sam Watters (Diana DeGarmo, Jessica Simpson); and Eman (Nick Lachey, Katharine McPhee).

Sure. Hands off until the Jive execs listen to the finished product.  If they don’t like it, they’ll send Jordin right back to the studio to record some more.  It’s happened before…

But, it sounds like Jordin’s being a good girl

“So far, I have a whole bunch of songs I love and can’t wait to perform,” she said. “All of the producers are really awesome, and being in the studio with them is cool, because we can communicate. When they tell me to do something, I will try to do it — if I can’t, they tell me to try it again. It’s cool to see how they all work. They know exactly what they want, what they need to hear, and it’s cool to get that direction.”

Cause she’s….say it with me….ONLY 17! Heh.

    What!? She’s only 17!!?? :jittery_tb: She’s writing songs!? Color me surprised.. :jittery_tb: :ohmy_tb:

What’s her audience anyway? Other than the Disney crowd, I can’t think of one. She needs to tap into that market as much as she can. It’s really not that a big deal to outsell Taylor Hicks, but I’m not convinced she will… :mellow_tb:

Let’s see if she even gets that 500K Clive said every Idol winner gets. However, Jordin does have the ability to make radio friendly music and get new fans neither of which Taylor was able to do. It’ll be interesting to see how she does. She’s a lovely girl and that will help her on TV, interview etc. It would hurt Idol to have two subpar winners in a row though.

People like me will end up buying Jordin’s music not for myself but for my girls. I personally love what Jordin represents. To me she seems to be a sweet, likeable girl who loves and respects her parents; a girl that has some decent morals (wow what a concept!); someone who is not obseesed with being a size 2 and is quite comfortable with herself. Those of us with young children - especially girls - appreciate people like Jordin because they are few and far between.

Well considering I hear her song all the time on our local Top 40 station, I’d say her audience is anyone that listens to that format. I still don’t really understand why people have a tendency to pigeonhole her as Disney. I mean, yes Jordin is young and fresh-faced, and “Tattoo” is definitely clean and cutesy, but the song has the right sound for pop radio. It doesn’t sound like Kidz Bop.

I tend agree with Mj in the fact that Jordin and Blake will outsell Taylor and Kat. Easily.

They both are young and cute and will make radio friendly music perfect for Top 40. Young fans love them.
I don’t think Jordin will do Carrie or Kelly Clarkson numbers, but she will be fine. She is so much better than Kat.
And Blake could be the Daughtry of the season, I hear his music is going to impress a lot of people and is perfect for Top 40 stations. That will sure help him a lot. I could be wrong though, but only time will tell.
I think both will be very successful.

I tend to agree that they both could do better than Kat and Taylor, even though they don’t seem to have rabid AI fanbases (well Blake does, kinda). The AI fanbase is only part of the story. Those 2 fit more on the larger landscape, so with good songs they each could catch on. Good luck to them!

the problem with “this Idol is going to be better than that Idol” is that AI sets everybody up to be a SINGER and we, the audience and fans, can’t let go that they are singers….look at that girl Julie Fuentes….she’s in the circus and loving it! Jennifer Hudson is an actress and loving it! So these idols don’t have to be SINGERS. They can make as much money, and get as much fame being an actress, an endorser, a spokesmodel….I look forward to seeing them all do other things besides singing.
I see Jordin as a Lane Bryant model….I betcha she announces before the end of the year she’s endorsing somebody’s clothing line. She’s a great looking model.
