Jordin Sparks Vocal Cord Damage?

Here’s something weird. I posted this announcement from Penn State University in today’s headline thread:

Due to an unfortunate illness, Jordin Sparks has been forced to cancel her show scheduled for this Sunday, April 20, at the Bryce Jordan Center.

Sparks’ doctor has advised the Jordan Center that the former “American Idol” winner cannot perform due to an acute vocal cord hemorrhage condition. Because of the risk of permanent vocal cord damage, Sparks has been ordered to strict vocal rest and will not be able to perform anywhere until her condition improves.

The Jordan Center apologizes for any inconvenience caused by this uncontrollable circumstance.

That doesn’t sound good. She’s also supposed to take part in an Earth Day event in Washington DC Sunday, and she’s supposed to start a tour with Alicia Keys this weekend, but so far there haven’t been any other announcements of cancellations. Vote For the Worst reports that there is more to the story. Hmmm…

Ah, I hope Jordin will recover soon. She’s just starting her career and she’s so young! (And I’m not trying to be snarky.)

  2. 2 pj Apr 19th, 2008 at 11:22 pm

I hope she’s okay, too. I find her pretty refreshing, even though she’s now 18.

  3. 3 taran33 Apr 19th, 2008 at 11:31 pm

Sure hope Jordin will be okay. Sounds pretty scary. Wonder what the heck VFTW is supposed to know??

  4. 4 cheese Apr 19th, 2008 at 11:40 pm

I hope she hasn’t done any permanent damage and will recover from this. The timing certainly couldn’t be any worse for her.

  5. 5 sciencefan Apr 19th, 2008 at 11:41 pm

How terrible for her right before she’s supposed to go on tour with Alicia Keyes. The doctor said there was no way to know how long she would have to rest her voice.

  6. 6 dv Apr 19th, 2008 at 11:45 pm

I hope Jordins okay and won’t be out for long, going on tour with Alicia Keys is such a huge thing.

  7. 7 GwendolynD Apr 20th, 2008 at 1:07 am

What more could there be to a story about vocal chord hemorrhaging? Hmmmmm….what other ways could Jordin damage her vocal chords? I think I can see where they’re trying to go with this one…. Hope I’m wrong.

  8. 8 J.S.G. Apr 20th, 2008 at 1:41 am

The tone of the VFTW story sure doesn’t sound good for Jordin or her career. This is scary.

  9. 9 purplesmile Apr 20th, 2008 at 2:27 am

I hope Jordin’s going to be ok. I like her. She’s a sweet girl.

  10. 10 skylight1219 Apr 20th, 2008 at 2:54 am

Her performance on IGB reminded me of Kat McPhee when she dueted with Meatball. Seems like they wanted to trash Jordin up a little.

  11. 11 Trina Apr 20th, 2008 at 3:00 am

I figured maybe the “big news” is she has to pull out of the Alicia tour. It would be upsetting but I don’t think it would spell trouble for her career..at least I hope that’s the extent of it all.

  12. 12 RollTide Apr 20th, 2008 at 7:54 am

Awww, bless her heart. I hope she’s OK. She’s doing so great now. That No Air song was even starting to grow on me - even though Tatoo had left me wanting to gouge out my eardrums.

  13. 13 erennick Apr 20th, 2008 at 8:33 am

Oh gosh! How awful for her! What is the rest of the story? I thought she and Chris Brown looked and sounded great together on AI.

  14. 14 Chicago-sally Apr 20th, 2008 at 9:45 am

Everyone has stated what I feel….but I wondered about her voice….many times wondered how “strong” her voice was because of the vibrato. That she was possibly singing out of her range…. I believe Lakisha Jones had some vocal problems and was learning how to sing better. …someone correct me….

  15. 15 gelfling Apr 20th, 2008 at 10:47 am

I don’t think she can get over the vocal chord damage that quickly. If she performs this weekend in Washington, I’ll doubt this story. If she cancels her tour with Alicia Keys but still sings today……. I don’t know.

What was the big reveal at VFTW? I don’t want to go over and read their trash talk.

  16. 16 purplesmile Apr 20th, 2008 at 11:00 am

I forget where I read it, but Jordin reportedly wasn’t at the Alicia Keys show. :(

  17. 17 schmanda Apr 20th, 2008 at 11:21 am

I forget where I read it, but Jordin reportedly wasn’t at the Alicia Keys show. :(

She wasn’t — it was blamed on “illness.”

  18. 18 t2 Apr 20th, 2008 at 11:30 am

Although I still think Jordin is beyond dull, I certainly don’t wish for something like this.

That Chris Brown song would definitely help her sell records.

And boo on VTFW, sneaky insinuations — I’d rather have at least something of a story.

  19. 19 Sarah Apr 20th, 2008 at 11:49 am

Oh no, Jordin!! I really hate this for her. But I’m sure all measures are being taken to make sure she recovers well. It would be a real shame if she did have to miss the Alicia Keys tour, but if it’s in her best long term interest, you gotta do what you gotta do.

Also, from that article that Schmanda posted - did anyone else catch this?

Keys’ longtime back-up singer, Jermaine Paul, opened the show.

Despite strumming a guitar and boasting a solid performance, Paul’s vocals were sometimes drowned out by his music.

Remember that name from AI7 spoilers? Isn’t he the one who dropped out sometime in Hollywood and was subsequently signed to J Records?

  20. 20 Lu Apr 20th, 2008 at 11:52 am

Isn’t this the same problem that Katharine Mcphee had at the start of the AI5 tour?

  21. 21 cheese Apr 20th, 2008 at 12:01 pm

Sarah, I think you’re right, the name Jermaine Paul was very familiar to me.

Lu, I was thinking the same thing and was proud of myself for not making any ice cream or swimming pool jokes. I think Kat’s problem was maybe not quite so serious? (not “acute”) I don’t remember.

  22. 22 Sarah Apr 20th, 2008 at 12:05 pm

No, Katharine’s problem was bronchitis/laryngitis, IIRC. Which is an issue in and of itself, but bleeding vocal chords just sounds awful. *shudder*

  23. 23 Lu Apr 20th, 2008 at 12:28 pm

Okay I googled it… the things I do to avoid housecleaning!!!! Katharine had bruised vocal cords - a result of all the coughing from the bronchitis that Sarah mentioned. Jordin’s condition sounds horrible… poor thing.

  24. 24 star Apr 20th, 2008 at 12:32 pm

I guess that explains why she appeared to be lipsyncing on Idols Gives Back. :/ Poor Jordin, I hope it’s not as bad as VFTW appears to be implying. Blake had bleeding vocal chords when he was trying to finish up recording ADD and it slowed him down a little. 19 works these kids hard.

  25. 25 mixman12 Apr 20th, 2008 at 1:02 pm

MJ, Just found out that Jordin will not be appearing at the Earth Day concert. She has been replaced by Blake Lewis who is doing a “cool version of America the Beautiful”. just wanted to let you know.

    TV Watch

  26. 26 GwendolynD Apr 20th, 2008 at 1:04 pm

Okay. Certain eating disorders cause vocal cord damage - even bleeding. Particularly bulimia/purging. I hope this is not the “more to the story” VFTW is talking about. I would find that hard to believe about Jordin. Her weight never appeared to be an issue with her, and she always looked perfectly healthy to me. However, right after her win, there was a tad bit of media obsession with it, if I recall correctly….

  27. 27 star Apr 20th, 2008 at 1:11 pm

    OMG, you’re right GwendolynD. :(

  28. 28 Bobbi Apr 20th, 2008 at 1:46 pm

“Blake’s planning a cool version of ‘America the Beautiful’ that will incorporate his own beat boxing and vocal scratching into the mix,” says an insider.

Blake’s going to beat box ‘America The Beautiful’? Oy vey!

  29. 29 judy Apr 20th, 2008 at 1:52 pm

Jordin is not my cup of tea, but I hope things go well for her. I never realized all these things could happen to the vocal cords until I became an AI crazy person. I thought she sounded good on AI.

Off subject, Blake Lewis doing a “cool” version of America the Beautiful? Ha! I saw him try to sing the SSB once - maybe in Seattle? - and even the announcers called him pitchy it was so bad.

  30. 30 jpfan Apr 20th, 2008 at 1:52 pm

I hope it’s just the vocal thing although VFTW keeps saying there’s more to the story. I hope she’s not pregnant or anything else. Get better, Jordin. I’m rooting for you. I think she actually makes a terrific role model for young girls these days and don’t want to see that messed up.

  31. 31 Trina Apr 20th, 2008 at 1:59 pm

“Blake’s planning a cool version of ‘America the Beautiful’ that will incorporate his own beat boxing and vocal scratching into the mix,” says an insider.

Well considering how he sounded on AI singing that single of his it’s probably better for everyone he not attempt actual singing. Might as well bring out the gimmicks.

  32. 32 Terrie Apr 20th, 2008 at 2:22 pm

Could this be a ploy to drop out of the tour due to the recent Alicia Keys Blender Magazine controversy? I hope Jordin’s situation isn’t anything more serious than that.

  33. 33 Lu Apr 20th, 2008 at 2:40 pm

Hmm… I wonder how Blek is going to find a way to insert the word “ass” America the Beautiful. He seems unable to speak without using that word…

Ha! just realized that typo - Blek… I think I’ll leave it as is.

“the recent Alicia Keys Blender Magazine controversy”

Yeah… I believe Alicia Keys is smokin somethin’. She really thinks the feds invented gangsta rap??? I heard about this last week. I won’t be supporting her career whether I like her music or not. I can’t part with my hard earned money for someone who spews crap like that.

  34. 34 junkie2003 Apr 20th, 2008 at 2:43 pm

terrie, i like you theory, but alicia went on every radio station and said that blender misquoted her. But terrie could be right on the money.

  35. 35 sciencefan Apr 20th, 2008 at 3:33 pm

It seems to me that LONG BEFORE a person’s vocal chords get bruised or start bleeding, someone should notice that something is wrong! Don’t they know how to take care of their voices? What good is it to traumatize your voice if you have to stop singing or even talking for 2 or 3 months?!

  36. 36 grayhound Apr 20th, 2008 at 4:58 pm

I remember Kelly Clarkson having to cancel an appearance on The Today Show after she won because she was completely hoarse. I don’t think AI lets these singers take very good care of their voices at all.

They are busy running them (and singing them) all over the place to promote their songs and I can imagine if the voice is already strained it just gets more problematic as time goes on.

Not sure if this is the case here, but it is possible I guess.

  37. 37 snuffles Apr 20th, 2008 at 5:15 pm

I have no doubt these vocal problems were a long time coming; but 19E kept pushing and pushing Jordin until it got to the point she couldn’t sing at all.

They don’t give 2 sh!ts about taking care of their clients health. I bet you right now, even though her doctors are demanding total vocal rest, 19E is trying to find the quickest way to get her back out on that stage singing.

  38. 38 hicksaholic Apr 20th, 2008 at 5:45 pm

Thank God Taylor decided against 19E. Don’t want him damaging his vocal chords. Now that I think of it as little as he has been singing that would be difficult- he might stand a better chance of throwing out his back playing golf.

  39. 39 Connie D. Apr 20th, 2008 at 6:46 pm

How odd… This article says she performed.

“American Idol singer Jordin Sparks, and hip-hop group the Roots, and jazz/hip-hop singer Chrisette Michele performed despite the heavy downpour.”

If I remember right Katharine burst a blood vessel in her vocal chords top 3 night. They had to give her a shot to get her voice working enought to sing on the finale.

Then she got bronchitis and something else that caused further damage and bruising to her already fragile vocal chords.

I’ve developed a soft spot for Jordin as her song “No Air” is catchy as hell. I wish her a full and speedy recovery.

  41. 41 GwendolynD Apr 20th, 2008 at 9:35 pm

She’s not the first musician to don a tinfoil hat and she won’t be the last. If I based my music buying on stuff like that, I think my collection would suffer. I really love her voice and will continue to buy her CDs if I like them.

  43. 43 Lu Apr 20th, 2008 at 10:48 pm

I hear ya PJ. I respect that… but I just can’t do it. Different strokes. It’s not really a huge sacrafice for me because I’m not a big fan.. lol.

BTW, can someone explain the whole tinfoil hat thing to me?

  44. 44 RollTide Apr 21st, 2008 at 8:07 am

What irritates me about the whole VFTW thing is, that no matter what happens, they can claim they knew first. **rolls eyes** If it’s something big, or something small, they can pretend they knew first b/c they’ve really said *nothing* with that post.

  45. 45 JordinSparksRulez01 May 10th, 2008 at 4:13 pm

OMG i So hope that Jorin will be ok she’s a great person and singer!!! Hope She Recovers Soon!!!!!! :laughing_tb:
