“Just Stand Up” – Song Sneak Peek – Video

A preview of the theme song for the big cancer telethon David Cook and the rest of the American Idol S7 Top 10 will be involved with is available for preview on the internets!

A slew of female superstars took part in the recording, including, Carrie Underwood, Leona Lewis, Mariah Carey, Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, Rihanna, Fergie, Sheryl Crow, Melissa Etheridge, Natasha Bedingfield, Miley Cyrus, Keyshia Cole, Leann Rimes, Ashanti and Ciara.

The tune, “Just Stand Up” will be released to iTunes on September 2 with proceeds going to cancer research. The telethon will air in a simulcast on many networks September 5 at 8 pm.

Country, pop, rock and R&B artists came together to make the record, but with Babyface Edmonds producing, it’s got a decidedly R&B flair. Decidedly 90’s R&B. Old school. Ish. Rousing chorus, key change, and inspirational lyrics mandatory for the big group charity song? Check.

But, never mind all that. It’s all for a good cause. I’ll no doubt be downloading my very own copy come September 2.

I think I picked out Carrie Underwood’s heavily processed vocal. The second line of the first verse? Correct me if I’m wrong…

Check it out After the JUMP…

  • With such talent (aside from Miley Cyrus), it’s a shame the producers felt the need to over-process the vocals so much.

  • I have a question. Wasn’t David Cook asked to do this telethon? Why do all of the others have to be involved in everything he does. I don’t mean to be selfish about it. But he is the American Idol. There are not ten of them or even two. This is a charity event and it is nice that they are all supporting it, but I wish he had a few more opportunities to strike out on his own. He deserves it.

  • I’m almost positive the Top 10 filmed a PSA that will be shown, while David will actually be there.

  • This is a charity event and it is nice that they are all supporting it, but I wish he had a few more opportunities to strike out on his own. He deserves it.

It’s a charity event. I say the more the merrier. The other Idols have fans too that may tune into the telethon for a chance to see their favs.

    It’s all good.

  • I had to stop half way through the song. So much talent, and such blah sound. I’m sure I’ll be buying it anyway to support the cause and donating as well, but I wish it was better.

  • You’re good, MJ! According to the text on the youtube link (which shows the lyrics and singer), Carrie is indeed the second verse. Although they credit Melissa Etheridge with participating on the song, she’s the only one whose voice I can’t pick out or see mentioned on the lyrics.

  • This is for a really good cause. You’d think they could have done quite a bit better on the song, given the artists involved. It sounds thrown together to me.

  • Yep, that definitely was Carrie doing her thing on the second verse. Ugh…that was kind of a mess. Beyonce was unmistakeable, of course (but not in a good way, LOL.) I definitely could pick out the voices of Fergie, Mariah and Keyshia, but beyond that just a big blur of catterwauling.

I guess I’ll go have to cheat and peek at the YouTube link to figure out the rest.

  • And Melissa, correct me if I’m wrong, is the only one who actually has had it and sings from experience.

  • Cause-great…song-awful

  • Sheryl Crow has also survived cancer.

Melissa Etheridge is the rock voice counterpoint on the second chorus.

  • Decent song….like “We Are the World” was decent. It’s for a definitely good cause so, yeah, I’ve got 99 cents.

  • I know it’s probably not the best place to put this since this is about charity and all but I just have to say it…. I am so freakin sick of Carrie Underwood. ! She’s everywhere. She invades everything… I’m innocently watching an NFL game and poof – there she is doing the anthem. I take my daughters to see Enchanted and she’s singing away in the soundtrack. I stand in line at the grocery store checkout and she’s staring back at me from all the magazines. Arrrgggghhhhhh……… My AC station plays her, my pop station plays her… Ummmm helllloooooooo…. she’s country – country I say! If I want to hear Carrie Underwood (and I DO NOT), I’ll turn on the country station. And now she’s out there talking about how her ex-boyfriend still callss her…. who freakin cares???????????? Okay – I feel better now. Sorry everyone.

  • I have to agree with Layla! It is such a great cause, but the song is just blah! I think they made a mistake by using only female voices. It would have been much more interesting had they used both male and females voices

That being said, I will definitely buy it because cancer funding has been so cut back, that we are losing this war on cancer.

I am a huge David Cook fan and his song AC is amazing. I wish he could perform that for this telethon! You just feel the passion in his voice.

I also somewhat understand where ShariG is coming from. In the past, I have not followed AI religiously, that is until David Cook! I find that he is so generous with sharing the spotlight with the other top 9, but is this the norm? I think DC deserves some more press focusing only on him. Did Larry King even ask him about his upcoming album. That interview was so awful! He also could have mentioned that Time of my Life was being played during the Olympic coverage. Oh well!

I am new to this site, so sorry this is so long!

  • Lu – I sympathize with you as my sis only likes country music and loves Carrie Underwood (she didn’t even realize she was an American Idol) and she is sick of her being everywhere. I feel the same way. Sometimes too much of a good thing just burns you out.

I actually like this song for what it is – a charity song – and will contribute my 99 cents to the cause. Actually I wish they had a all guy song too.

  • I had to stop half way through the song. So much talent, and such blah sound. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m sure Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll be buying it anyway to support the cause and donating as well, but I wish it was better.

Okay I’m not trying to be cynical, just trying to understand this thinking. Why buy something you don’t like in order to support the cause? Why not just donate directly to the telethon?

  • A wonderful cause — a terrible song. What is with all the cheesy synth stuff? Miley Cyrus is heinous.

  • Count me in as another one sick of Carrie Underwood. I heard her being played on a country station today, and, thought, “so what?” I’m so over her.

Yes, David Cook is the AI, but, the other idols have fan bases as well, or they wouldn’t be on tour right now. When the tour is over, they will go their separate ways, and, people can drool over their chosen one. I sort of feel like I’m sick of David Cook already too. And, he hasn’t even released his CD yet.

  • Okay Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not trying to be cynical, just trying to understand this thinking. Why buy something you donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t like in order to support the cause? Why not just donate directly to the telethon?

    I’ll probably do both.

I think that they included the other Idols because they would have nine other fanbases watching and possibly sending money to support the cause. If it were just Cook, I would have no reason to be interested in the event.

  • Why do all of the others have to be involved in everything he does.

There are other shows whose casts will be involved as well like: 30 Rock, CSI Miami, Lost, and The Simpsons (I don’t know if they mean the actors who do the voices or the cartoons?) so why not the current Idol cast too? Besides it seems like David Cook is the only one that will be there in person, anyway.

If it were just Cook, I would have no reason to be interested in the event.

Huh….okay. To me, it seems like a really worthwhile way to spend an hour of tv time even if no Idol people were involved at all.

  • So everyone who wants to support this great cause should also check out Ace on the MDA telethon. It’s all about the kids, right? Not who’s idol is better. :-)

  • Posts deleted.

Fanwanking gets on my last nerve. It belongs on your fansites. Keep it off my blog.

    That is all.

  • I must to remember that this is for charity. Good. Something good can come out of that mediocre mess.

I need someone to do for R&B what David Cook did for me with rock. Rock bored the skin off me. Ho bloody hum. Nothing special. Could never really get into it.

R&B is boring the skin off me now. Skinless…that’s what I’m about to be! Naked bones and stuff.

Same ol’ same ol’. Over ornamentation, incipid voices, and undecipherable lyrics. That was very light ladies, very light. What? Only part of the song I liked was when Melissa sang. Can’t believe some of you good folks couldn’t hear her. She was as clear and commanding. Thing is, I’m an R&B fan… But I guess I like old school (way old) cuz this drivel sux. It’s my genre…but maybe not. I think I’ve aged out of it.

Youch! Guess I’ll crawl back into my cougar lair.

David Cook isn’t *everyone’s* American Idol. Archie, Jason, MJ, Carly all have huge fan bases.
