Katharine McPhee - Big in Japan! VIDEO

Katharine McPhee and David Foster recorded a song for a Japanese Airlines commercial. Not the most exciting visuals in the world, but it appears that flying in Japan is pretty sweet.

I can’t see the vid (I’m at work) but please tell me that she’s singing Tom Waits song, Big in Japan. That, I might watch.

I guess Elliott Yamin if ‘big in japan’ too. One would assume their duet would be a big hit over there.

Elliott is doing pretty well in Japan. However, I don’t think Real Love is being promoted there (yet). Elliott was recently there to promote the Japanese edition of his own album.

I’m looking forward to the new music of Kat. I don’t like David Foster very much but I’m hoping he brought out the best in Kat. :)

I think Kat has arguably the best natural voice to come out of AI. Im not saying she has done the best, or has the best style or anything like that. But i believe, at her best, she beats anyone in pure singing talent. brilliant

Kat’s voice is completely generic. She can sing but there is nothing unique or remarkable about it. If you can’t see her and they don’t say who is singing it could be anyone. She is very beautiful though.

I think she has an distinct breathy tone to her voice. There are times that the sound reminds me of a jazzier sounding Olivia Newton-John without the high quality to it. I also think that what David Foster got out of her with her recorded version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow was remarkable.

  6. 6 Layla Jun 11th, 2008 at 3:28 pm

Beautiful girl but I agree that her voice isn’t very remarkable at all. She simply is not unique enough to ever become big. Working with that asshole David Foster is as far as she will go.

I saw Kat twice last night doing commercials for Neutrogena. This seems to be her niche, as she hasn’t really done well as a recording artist. But, hey, she’s working.

The airplane looks nice, like it has comfy seats. But the song was kind of boring. It also sounded a little countryfied, which is weird, because I never considered Kat as a country artist. Not even a little. Oh well. I’m sure they had their reasons for doing it that way.

  9. 9 StevenD Jun 11th, 2008 at 3:51 pm

She has one film coming out at the end of August “The House Bunny” which looks like it could find the Legally Blonde niche and then she’s confirmed for another movie called “The Story Teller” with Wes Bentley. She’s also currently recording her second solo disc and has a few other movies in the preproduction phase.

As for her voice I love my belters but I would always put her in the top 4 or 5 of my favorite American Idol singers and I still think she had the performance of that season with “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”

David Foster loves those ballads, doesn’t he?

It was alright…. I just think she show more promise with her audition than she’s displayed post-Idol….”SOTR” aside.

I still don’t think she’s found the right niche of music. So until then, I hope the acting thing works out for her.

Nice seats……someone wrote in comment section that the song was THE most beautiful song they had ever heard. I love America..we have so many choices.

  12. 12 abbysee Jun 11th, 2008 at 5:19 pm

Okay, that song is a snoozefest, sorry, but it’s pedantic and looooong! That being said she sounds nice, just nice. I think that her singing is quite generic and it reminds me of a scene in Dreamgirls where the Jamie Foxx character tells Deena that the reason he chose her was because her voice was in essence soul-less and a blank slate. That is how I feel about Kat, he singing doesn’t mean anything to me. I don’t hate it, I don’t love it. I just don’t care. I guess indifference would be the word. Imho the best thing she could do would be to find a great song writer because that is the only way there will be any there, there, as far as her career is concerned.

  13. 13 Kat Jun 11th, 2008 at 5:39 pm

Well, I can see that David Foster has certainly revitalized Kat’s musical career. /snerk

Why does she always gulp her words? It makes her sound like she’s crying and singing at the same time, and it’s annoying.

But as others have said…hey, at least she is working.

  14. 14 Sparkles Jun 11th, 2008 at 5:45 pm

It’s a good thing those seats recline because if they play that song on the plane, they’re going to have a lot of snoozing passengers.

  15. 15 KrazeeK120 Jun 11th, 2008 at 5:59 pm

Ah, my two favorite people…Kat McPhee and David Foster. I can’t believe I watched the whole commercial and didn’t fall asleep. I thought My Destiny was bad, but the song on this commercial my very well be worse.

If you hadn’t told me that was Kat, I honestly wouldn’t have known. Her voice is very unremarkable unless she’s sitting on the floor in a white dress with the light from heaven streaming down upon her.

In other news, I would LOVE to fly on that airplane! Everyone gets their own TV….pretty cool! I’ve never been on a plane like that before.

  16. 16 blairw Jun 11th, 2008 at 6:18 pm

:D the song is so pretty!

considering her sales i can’t believe all the GREAT gigs she’s still getting.
there is so much to look forward to with her. :)

  17. 17 wfowfowfo Jun 11th, 2008 at 6:25 pm

I’m with the masses: *big yawn*. What is with David Foster? Thinking with the wrong head, perhaps?

    The plane is cool.

  18. 18 Kat Jun 11th, 2008 at 6:30 pm

considering her sales i can’t believe all the GREAT gigs she’s still getting.

Hey, good for Kat for booking something, but if this is a “great gig”, I’d hate to see what a crappy one looks like.

  19. 19 erennick Jun 11th, 2008 at 7:11 pm

I’ll add my thoughts. I always liked the sound of Kat’s voice on AI and I think she is just stunning. BUT- not a big fan of her personality, especially after the show.

The song is so snooze worthy, and I do agree that her voice doesn’t sound particularly unique here either. I think the gig is cool though…

  20. 20 jpfan Jun 11th, 2008 at 7:16 pm

It’s nice to see Foster has stayed a mentor for Kat. I agree that she lacks the uniqueness of a true recording artist but this is def a nice gig. However, if there’s one Idol I can see on Broadway, it would be her.

It seems that Foster is also “adopting” Micheal Johns and getting him gigs. Does Foster has a record label? If he produced an album for Kat or Johns who would release it?

  21. 21 hollygo9 Jun 11th, 2008 at 7:18 pm

I’m not a fan of either her or Foster but it’s nice to see AI alum working in music. It’s sad how many of them end up as sub-cable show hosts.

  22. 22 jpfan Jun 11th, 2008 at 7:39 pm

A little off topic but I always thought Kat’s biggest problems was her lack of musical identity. The current gigs I’ve read about - acne ad, teen sorority film and now the ad with Foster still send out that confused mixed identity she has. The ones that send out one message like Pickler in country just seem to have much better careers.

  23. 23 mj Jun 11th, 2008 at 9:12 pm

Two effing years later and we’re still fan warring? Actually we are not. Deleting posts!

  24. 24 dante Jun 11th, 2008 at 9:15 pm

kat is still the only idol I don’t like - don’t like her voice - don’t like her actions - agree that she is beautiful

david foster must really have a thing for her though…..

  25. 25 hollygo9 Jun 11th, 2008 at 9:17 pm

Love it or hate it, Season 5 still looks like the leader in number of contestants placed in real jobs.

The current gigs I’ve read about - acne ad, teen sorority film and now the ad with Foster still send out that confused mixed identity she has.

Actually I thought that was how you build a lasting career? She didn’t have a successful album but has been able to keep herself out there a lot longer then Taylor Hicks has been able to do with the general public. Also Hollywood usually doesn’t give a leading role to someone on their first try, they let them prove themselves in smaller diverse type of roles until they can build a name with the public. I remember Sarah Michelle Geller saying that she was doing mostly Horror films (during the Scream 2, I Know What You Did…) because at that time those were the most interesting roles that an actress could get at that time. As long as Kat doesn’t handle herself unprofessionally on a set and if she’s a decent actress she’ll keep getting work in film.

As for her voice after hearing the song I thought that it sounded like a typical Idol final song but I also thought her voice sounded distinctive enough to know who it was right away and I do love that tone she has.

  27. 27 tinawina Jun 11th, 2008 at 10:13 pm

Kat has a pretty voice. I don’t know about distinctive though. But I don’t know if that matters to a degree … if she had a musical identity that clicked, combined with some good songs, she’d sell IMO. Her voice just needs to be distinctive in whatever genre she’s trying to compete. But I wouldn’t call her career over just yet. She does have a movie coming out. For all we know she can act. Not many people would have predicted JHud’s success before Dreamgirls. I’m not really a fan of hers, but she just may end up doing well.

  28. 28 Lu Jun 11th, 2008 at 11:06 pm

I think the song is pretty. She sounds good!

  29. 29 sciencefan Jun 12th, 2008 at 7:43 am

It was too boring to listen to the whole thing. As a person who loves and appreciates clever and well done commercials, I have to say, her sloppy annunciation was driving me nuts. You can do that in pop music, but you’re not supposed to do it on commercials. I would think David Foster would have coached her better than that. Apparently, he’s not very good at producing commercials. I don’t really get what’s so great about him. I think he has poor judgment.

  30. 30 pj Jun 12th, 2008 at 10:48 am

I’m not a fan of the song or her voice, but kudos to her for the gig. She’s probably making some pretty good money.

  31. 31 mj Jun 12th, 2008 at 10:53 am

She’s probably making some pretty good money.

    DING. Exactly.

Lot’s of Hollywood celebs way more famous than Kat do commercials overseas, particularly in Japan. The names of these A list celebs might surprise you, as they don’t do commercials stateside in order not to seem cheesy or overexposed.

  32. 32 primeminister Jun 12th, 2008 at 11:04 am

Perhaps she gulps the words to seem sexy.

The most exciting thing about this song was the MSN Messenger friend coming online at the end of the clip. Did anyone else get excited?!

  33. 33 marymagdalene Jun 13th, 2008 at 10:42 am

Also Hollywood usually doesn’t give a leading role to someone on their first try, they let them prove themselves in smaller diverse type of roles until they can build a name with the public.

You are correct that H’wood usually does not give leading roles on their first try, but I can think of two movies where the leading roles were “Unknowns”:

    1) Peter O’Toole :wub_tb: for “Lawrence of Arabia” as Lawrence; and
    2) Nikki Blonsky for “Hairspray” as Tracy Turnblad… :happy_tb:

Hahahah omg i just busted out laughing. thanks for that…

Fan wars will be around forever mj, ppl love their idols…true story.

And I bet Kat made more money from that Japan ad and the acne add (which i am sure she has never had a zit in her life) than from her album, so good for her
