Can’t believe she was able to land that last glory note. Wowwww..that could have been a train wreck. But it wasn’t.

Kat reminds me of those starlets of years past who the studios try to turn into stars. They get the plum roles, good publicity, etc. but somehow it just doesn’t take. That said, she has a great agent and did a credible job. Next year, I think Kristy Lee Cook gets this gig. She’ll be singing God Bless America, of course.

I love Kat. But she was deff lip synching. oh well

I can’t get up the excitement to click on it…

I was too bored to watch more than 30 seconds. I just had to make sure it was the same song that I loved when I was 5. It is. I didn’t know that it was a Drifters song, though. I thought it was a DeFranco Family song (yes, I had the 45 and I’m old).

Here’s the awesome DeFranco family version:

    yikes — boring (not surprised.)

Kats problem is that she’s so generic. You will never turn on the radio and say hey, that’s kat singing (unless your a kat goneroundthebendfreakfan). Good voice with no distinguishing qualities.

I feel the same way about Michael Johns - he could be any choir boy out there.

    Neither are distinctive.

But both have Dave Foster — he’ll give them false hopes until another false hope comes along.

    Kat, youre so pretty!

  10. 10 pj Jul 5th, 2008 at 1:25 am

The way she’s holding the umbrella is just weird. Why not hold it over her left shoulder if she’s going to use her right hand on the mic? Is she preggers?

  11. 11 coco Jul 5th, 2008 at 1:36 am

LOL…I had the 45 too. I guess you remember the Bay City Rollers too. :biggrin_wp:

  12. 12 sumidol Jul 5th, 2008 at 1:46 am

Well - I started to watch that, the fireworks going of while she was trying to sing - the umbrella - that was annoying - weird

  13. 13 Seraphina Jul 5th, 2008 at 2:31 am

The whole umbrella thing looked like she was plucked from some 40’s musical. lol

My fav version of that song is Bublé’s. Kat? Not so much. She managed to remove all fun & frivolity from the song. But hey, Foster got to keep it all in his studio family.

  14. 14 BlankSlate Jul 5th, 2008 at 3:17 am

I agree. She had to be lip synching. Why no close-ups since she is the “Beautiful”?

And that weird umbrella stance. What was that about? Hiding a belly roll in your diva gown, toots?

  15. 15 blairw Jul 5th, 2008 at 5:52 am

    loved it

  16. 16 Layla Jul 5th, 2008 at 5:58 am

WAS she lip-syncing? Damn she’s beautiful but oh-so-boring. Couldn’t inagine buying her cd and listening to 10 of the same in a row.

  17. 17 Lu Jul 5th, 2008 at 8:26 am

I guess you remember the Bay City Rollers too.

    S-A-TUR-DAY NIGHT!

  18. 18 J.S.G. Jul 5th, 2008 at 8:32 am

Well if this is Kat’s new career direction, then her late and lamented CD could be the musical highlight of her career.
How could any song that is competing with the fireworks in the bakground ever be considered boring??
Maybe she should have changed the lyric to ‘Save the Last Dance for Me When I’ll be with my Umbrella..ella..ella ella,’ you know the ultimate fusion of Ben E King with Rhianna that the pop music world has been waiting for.

Was a good vocal without all the unnecessary runs and high notes but after watching this I gotta wonder, is anybody managing this woman’s career?

  19. 19 Lu Jul 5th, 2008 at 8:49 am

I can’t imagine what kind of music she’ll put out now that she’s hooked up with Foster. It sure seems like it will be a cd full of ballads but I could be wrong. First there was the slow version of Something on AI and now this. One thing is for sure though - she does have a beautiful voice and she’s gorgeous.

  20. 20 dante Jul 5th, 2008 at 9:50 am

No denying Kat is gorgeous, but that was sooooo boring and the umbrella was weird. Still not a fan.

  21. 21 claireb7tx Jul 5th, 2008 at 10:29 am

    1) It seemed like she could have lost the umbrella for the song (3 min). The entire audience with the exception of one other person I saw in the front, were without an umbrella, it couldn’t have raining all that hard. It also blocked the fireworks…

    2) why this song…not blaming Kat for this, it may have chosen for her but it was just a wierd song to be singing during the fireworks.

  22. 22 jpfan Jul 5th, 2008 at 10:51 am

It was pretty funny seeing the little kid on the left w/o an umbrella while Kat had one. I kept expecting her to go over to him and share the umbrella.
Maybe, they were afraid she’d get electrocuted w/o it. (puzzled)

  23. 23 catielyn Jul 5th, 2008 at 11:21 am

The problem is, she looks like one of Macy’s mannequin’s, come to life.

The umbrella looks like a summer prop with the red, white and blue stripes.

She’s stiff when she sings and has no personality.

  24. 24 Glamour Jul 5th, 2008 at 11:56 am

The umbrella looks odd and awkard, but other than that, thought she did good. I liked the fireworks in the background.

  25. 25 awilliams Jul 5th, 2008 at 12:41 pm

Yes, an odd song for 4th of July.

I agree that Kat’s voice is on the generic side. I wouldn’t have recognized her with my eyes closed.

What I found really distracting though was the big band with all the brass on this song. Just didn’t seem to be in sync.

  26. 26 Kat Jul 5th, 2008 at 12:56 pm

Got through about a minute of it. Just the usual — unnecessary melisma, unnecessary concentration on the camera, and not a whole lot of anything unique. And wtf was with the umbrella?

Oh well. I stuck with hers longer than I stuck with Taylor’s, which is saying something.

  27. 27 dante Jul 5th, 2008 at 3:30 pm

Did anyone notice when they introduced her, they said “the beautiful and talented” - of course beautiful is mentioned first cause without it she wouldn’t be where she is. Poor Melinda - if only she looked like Kat….

  28. 28 daisy Jul 5th, 2008 at 6:27 pm

Kat is very pretty, her singing and her performance very meh for me, if David Foster wants to make her a star, good luck to him, I won’t be buying

  29. 29 GwendolynD Jul 5th, 2008 at 8:01 pm

What the heck happened to this Katharine McPhee??? Simon said she was “very current”. Now, it seems like the life is gone from her voice. Interesting.
