Kelllie Pickler Debuts on the Billboard 200 at No. 9 - Tells People “I Battled a Year Long Depression”

Kellie Pickler’s sophomore album, Kellie Pickler debuts on the  Billboard Hot 200 this week, selling 43,000 copies according to Nielsen Soundscan.  Interestingly, her 2006 album, Small Town Girl, debuted in the exact same spot (#9) at nearly the same time (10/30), but sold 79,000.  That’s nearly twice the number of units sold. So goes the music industry in the year 2008.

In other news, Kellie tells People magazine, in a story due to hit newsstands this Friday, that she battled a year-long depression.  Kellie explains, “Everything in my professional life seemed great, but in my personal life, I was just crumbling.”  She attributes her troubles to a tough breakup with her hockey player boyfriend, Jordin Tootoo, her recently paroled dad’s descent back into crime (he’s been returned to jail) and her long-absent mom’s re-emergence in the press.

She took anti-depressants, but had to stop taking them because the side-effects made her “crazy.”

Kellie attributes friendships with Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood, and a new boyfriend–Nashville songwriter Kyle Jacobs–with getting her back on the right track.  Writing songs for the new album also helped exercise those demons.

Nothing like a little drama to help goose those record sales!  But then, Kellie’s career was launched on a soap opera, why stop now?  Kellie Pickler = Drama r Us.

Good for Kellie staying on track despite all the drama.

    Also:

her hockey player boyfriend, Jordin Tatoo

    LOL for serious?!

I checked People and I guess someone there had a brainburp typing up the original text…it’s now been changed to “Jordin Tootoo”.

I’m sure the timing of her story won’t hurt sales, but it seems to me that the story could very well be true. Stripping away how it was all built up on AI, her upbringing certainly wasn’t the easiest. Having her father get out of jail and promptly return and then her mother appearing out of nowhere had to be rough since it all took place publically. She’s still young and despite the past couple of years, not very worldly. It makes sense to me that it would have thrown her for a loop just dealing with all of it. The nasty breakup with a boyfriend she probably relied on couldn’t have helped.

I like Kellie and think she’s done remarkably well for herself both with her career and in handling what life has thrown at her. I sincerely hope she is able to build a long career and a happy life for herself, with people around her that she can really depend on.

I second what Bobbi said. Life isn’t always fair and Kellie’s had way more thrown at her than most of us could even imagine. wish her well

I know her soap opera is what keeps her assesible in a sense to her fans. Her dramas are things that every young woman can relate to. I do know that Carrie’s soap operas have more to do with what gorgeous hunk of a boyfriend she’s gonna break up with via text. Or those horrible body image issues that she has, you know that extra lb of fat she lugs around, lol. I hope that Picklers cd sells as good as the first, numbers are strange nowadays but she’s getting good reviews, and it seems her mgt, and record company are doing good things for her. Kudos.

She was on gac the other day. she explained this very well. I dont think it is made up or she is trying to milk it in the press. The song I think on her album the the song I jus want to be loved is the song she wrote about it. She explained the whole story behind the song. When your on the road all the time away from friends and think about it in her case she has no family to lean on. She said one night at 3 am she emailed amy mayo and said I just wat someone to love me. And she emailed her back saying they needed to write a song about it. Sounds like she was very lonely. The girl is really a great girl and has turned out really well considering what she has going for her.

Wow. I just noticed this and excuse me for pointing this out but . . . the photo of her with this thread leaves very little to the imagination does it?

I love the Pickler! And what a turnaround for me - she drove me crazy on AI, but ever since she has cracked me up and I think she is great fun. Go Kelly!

Sign me up as another one who didn’t care for her on the show, but has warmed up to her since. I think she’ll do well with this album. She may not be the next country superstar, but she’ll sustain a respectable career. Mark my words.

Ditto me! I kept feeling everything was so incredibly fake on AI and, in retrospect, she used her abilities as a natural comedienne on Idol, lame though much of it was.

As soon as I saw her do that red carpet on Leno, I immediately fell in love with her. I enjoyed her first album and hope to get her new one soon.

I really like the girl and wish her the very best.

To me, her personality is her number one asset.

Her live vocals are her biggest impediment to musical success.
