Kelly Clarkson “All I Ever Wanted” Hits No. 1 on Billboard, Moves 255K

As expected, Kelly Clarkson’s All I Ever Wanted debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, selling 254,671 copies in its first week, 70,000 of them digitally. The set is also No. 1 on the Digital Album chart.
This is Kelly’s first No. 1 album since her debut in 2002. All four of Kelly’s albums have debuted in the Top 3.
Kelly’s smash hit single “My Life Would Suck Without You” has sold over 1 million units in the U.S. alone and dominated the Billboard Hot 100 chart coming in at #1 for two weeks in a row.Congratulations Kelly! You can catch Kelly performing tomorrow night (3/19) on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and on Oprah Friday (3/20).
This week’s other Idol debut, Taylor Hicksà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ The Distance, entered at 58, selling 9K

Taylor actually sold about twice as many CDs as I thought he would. Hopefully he’ll at least pass Constantine’s numbers with this one, but KLC might be out of reach.
Really happy for Kelly – I like the CD more each time I listen to it.

The Idol With The Most

(US Sales)
Clarkson has sold 9,836,000 albums, as of this week, more than any other contestant in Idol history. She ranks #187 on Nielsen/SoundScan’s running list of the best-selling artists in its history (which dates to 1991)
Eeeeeeeek. That’s not a good place to be.
I’m surprised Taylor’s numbers are so low. This CD is worlds better than the last, although I’ve read that a lot of people are having a hard time getting it (Walmart is claiming they didn’t arrive in the expected shipmet). I think he’ll keep selling some at the Grease tours & shadow concerts he’s doing in tangent with that, and he might get a bump if he performs on Idol. I do think, however, that Idol did him a great disservice w/ the constant bashing of him. If they want people to look at their franchise as a real chance for success, they should help ALL their winners. I mean, he is the only Idol winner who did not come back on the show the following year to perform his single, and then return for the finale. He was only back for the finale. Way to diss the reiging idol at the time, when he just came off the biggest tour they had ever had and his album was just released. Made no sense.
That’s too bad that Taylor’s CD sold so few
… well, I have one of them at least, lol. It’s actually pretty good. I picked up Kelly’s & Melinda’s too and they are great. And these Idols are causing my bank account pain… now I’m waiting for Elliott’s
I hope Taylor Hix can take this ugly number(9K) like a man. God Bless the small Unit movers too.
That is impressive! However hasn’t she been around longer than the rest of the contestants from AI like Carrie and Daughtry? So is it a fair comparison? Kelly has 4 cds….Carrie 2 and Daughtry 1… I think. Of course that’s not to say that Kelly wouldn’t outsell them even if they all had the same number of cds
LOL….I find it amazing that complete crap like Kelly Clarkson’s new album can move 255k in a week and a solid soul album like The Distance can only move 9k.
I realize there were problems with some of the stores having the record but still.
Unreal.
Taylor’s is an uphill battle being indie. I don’t think 9k is bad. It seems that he’s just now building radio play and touring. According to rumors floating about he’s got an idol appearance this season. he needs to belt out something off his new cd. he’ll move some units. Remember he’s been under the radar for a while… no pun intended.
I normally don’t like the numbers comparisons but on this, i’ll bite.
Obviously – Kelly’s been around the longest.
Obviously – the 4th album was JUST released and not included in that rounded 10M number.
Obviously – My December didn’t have a chance with the politics.
I also believe only one of her albums has had the advantange of the holiday season following shortly after. And, her first album didn’t have the whole AI “thing” behind her…things really got cookin’ the following season with fan wars for sales numbers. I have to throw that silly part of this whole era out there….lol Economy blah blah blah, internet downloads blah blah…*insert your own excuse here* the list is endless
Her worldwide sales are what’s impressive (to me).

I guess 245,000 people in this country have more taste than the 9,000 who brought that crap.
He’s not the lowest selling idol by accident.
The Distance is a good album. Too bad Taylor’s crack management team (again!) couldn’t get their act together enough to insure that the CD would be in stores on the release date. Apparently Wal-Mart thought the release date was the 17th!
I’ll go out on a limb and suggest that the CD will keep selling as long as Taylor tours, either in Grease or on his own concert tour. There are so many people out there who don’t even know he has a CD out. The more he travels, gives interviews in each city and performs, the more people will become aware of his new music. And who knows, maybe a song like Nineteen will resonate with enough fans to get some airplay. It seems to be the song that many people appreciate.
Love Taylor’s music or not, you have to give him kudos for being one of the hardest working guys in the business. I admire his drive and determination.
Note to Dingo: If you read this, please give a listen to the bonus track called Indiscriminate Act of Kindness. It’s Taylor at his raw, emotional best, IMO. I think you might like it.
Thank God I know that sales figures are not indicative of the quality of an album.
Taylor, keep on rockin. You put out a damn fine album, and all on your own. You have nothing to be ashamed of AT ALL.
I would also be curious to know how well any of the other Idols would be doing if they had received the same total absence of support from their record company, the radio industry, or the American Idol PTB that Taylor has had after his (well deserved) win.
I’m so happy for Kelly.. she deserves all the success! =) And I love that Yahoo music blog about all her achievements and records… amazing.
And aww at Taylor…
I’m not a big fan of the guy but I do think he has a very interesting quality and I’ve always found it so disgusting the way AI has treated one of their winners. Hope the sales pick up for him somehow…
And I hope all the other idol alumni gearing up to release new albums have better numbers…
From a longtime Taylor fan, here are some thoughts.
I think it has been established that the Soul Patrol is composed of an older demographic…..could this have bearing on Taylor’s sales considering album downloading skills may be scarce? I had my daughter help me download his album. Haven’t looked in the store yet. But I will. It captures his vibe wonderfully and has a couple of standouts. Seven Mile Breakdown is pure Southern soul. Nineteen should hit the country charts.
There are many who remember Taylor fondly from AI and may feel sheepish in buying his music now because AI has made it him sooooo uncool. The winner who really didn’t.
It makes my heart ache to see AI kick one of their winners. Come on, Ryan – all smiley and snarky , bashing away. Weren’t you the guy who gleefully lolled around on the AI logo with Tay after he killed on Play That Funky Music……..
Millions loved Taylor on his season – his voice, his story, his musical arrangements and performance ability, his personality and sense of humor. He won because he’s a great musician and America loved him.
Now it seems he’s up against the biggest music making machine of our time.
AI producers, you have no soul. And I don’t mean musically.
#5 on the indie charts sounds like a better comparison of where Taylor’s at right now.
ETA: Sorry, my link to the Billboard Indie Chart didn’t work.
Indiscriminate Act of Kindness (which is the Target bonus track) is just incredible. It is worth it to try to find this if you haven’t bought Taylor’s cd yet and are planning to.
I haven’t heard the Walmart bonus track (Hide nor Hair I think).
This second cd is so much more “Taylor” at his best – it is a shame it is not getting more promo – like on idol.
