Kimberly Caldwell – Los Angeles Talent Showcase – VIDEO

Kimberly Caldwell is gearing up to release her debut album, Without Regret, in April 2010 on Vanguard Records. She performed a showcase in Los Angeles Thursday afternoon (Dec 10) and Lyndsey Parker of Yahoo music was there to check it out.
I must say, was extremely impressed by what I heard today. Her voice was stronger and bolder than I remember from her Idol days, and her songs were tough ‘n’ tender in that instantly clicky Kelly Clarkson-ish way (more like Kelly’s misunderstood, Benatarian third album, My December, with a little bit of Allison Iraheta-esque swagger thrown in–all very good things, in my opinion).
After the jump, check out three of the performances. On Idol, Kim’s husky rasp was best served by songs with a rock edge–like Melissa Ethridge’s “Come To My Window”. Wisely, Kim is following her strength here. It’ll be interesting to see what she serves up come spring.
Kimberley’s work on the TV Guide channel has kept her in the spotlight, but her first album has been a long time coming–she was a Season 2 contestant, way back in 2003!

Introducing Kimberley Caldwell

her voice reminds me of Concrete Blonde’s Johnette Napolitano.
Well good for her. She seems like someone who has been working hard ever since the end of her season. Taking opportunities and making the most of them. I may not have cared for her somewhat brash personality on her season of idol, but I still respect what she has done for herself.
Seems like she’s trying to channel Debbie Harry (in the hair department).
Kim sounds and looks great. She was one of my favorites from season two. Ruben, Trenyce and Kim….. looking forward to hearing more.
I kinda liked Kim on AI. Not so much here. I think the smoking has throttled her voice. Also not a big fan of the big poofy hair.
That is NOT music to my ears. Her range is tiny. No ear candy time for me!
I wish her well, but her voice sounds kind of shot to me. The key she starts in when she’s singing live is so low she sounds atonal to my ear. She sounds better on the clip from the album, though.
Get thee to an ENT, Kim, and QUIT SMOKING!
Thanks, but I’ll pass.
What movin2thabeet said.
Her album cover terrifies me.
I can hear better at my local dive bar.
I was really thinking this would be good…..maybe the sound was bad but from this video and the ones I watched from Live…Vineyard….I think she needs to stick to modeling and hanging out with Justin G.
Definitely wasn’t a fan of hers when she was on AI but it sounds like she’s found her niche applying her husky vocals to polished pop rock songs. The Going, Going Gone song sounds promising. The other 2 songs I wasn’t into but that’s partly because I couldn’t make out melodies too well.
I haven’t watched Kimberly in her TVG gig in a long time so I don’t know if she’s toned down the in your face brashness that made TWOP call her KimberME but she seems likable in that Introducing video and the songs sound pretty good.
Hey if she releases a solid album good for her. I do respect that she’s kept at it, done honest work, and now seems to be coming up with decent music.
My initial impression was that I liked the cover but IMO it doesn’t hold up under scrutiny. But I’ll give it this: it’s striking.

I’m thinking that small children will recoil in horror, screaming at their mothers, “Mommy! Mommy! Don’t let the witch vampire woman hurt me with her hair!”
SpenserJ, Ross — where are you when I need a co-snarker?
I was not a big supporter of her on AI.
Very good looking but was very brassy blond. Perhaps she just tried too hard. I definitely like her better on these vids. Contrary to a above poster(and I am not advocating smoking ifshe does) I like her raspy rocker sounding voice. Her songs were, to me, very palatable. Hmm, maybe that is a whisky voice.Hee!
Anyway, I remember Warren being a guest judge that year, and I am happy that Kimberly had the benefit of her mentorship.
I believe there is a market for her if she just rocks a little harder.
For sure her Album cover is daring and striking just like a rockers should be!!
Well, I didn’t start watching AI ’til S5, and didn’t know about Idol Tonight, and her TC Guide gigs until S7, and really only paid attn to her once David Cook asked her out on national TV, lol. From the above videos, it sounds like I might like her album, some of the songs on the Introducing Kimberly video sound promising, but I don’t think she’s going to be a better live performer than recording artist. I think her voice needs the magic of the studio to be really good. I wish her luck with her career though. Brash or not, I never thought she was a bad person. She just had fun a little louder than most people, lol!
