Kris Allen: Seven Songs From the Upcoming Album Revealed and Reviewed!
Lyndsey Parker of Yahoo Music got the chance to preview 7 new songs from Kris Allen’s upcoming self-titled album. (read it HERE)
She describes the songs as “Big, widescreen adult-alt-pop records reminiscent of VH1 house bands like Carolina Liar, Maroon 5, or Augustana, all full of huge hooky choruses ridiculously ready-made for radio.”
She believes the album is ” positively teeming with potential hits,” and thinks 19 will have a difficult time picking the next single.
Of the 7 songs she heard, 5 were written or co-written by Kris. In fact, Kris had a hand in writing 9 of the album’s 12 tracks!
Here’s a little tidbit–Kris took vocal lessons after he appeared on Idol. Lyndsey reports that Kris is stretching his vocal range like never before on big, anthemic choruses.
Interestingly, there’s lots of songwriting from peeps who’ve written for females, like Duffy, Adele, Lilly, Kylie and Christina. But, Lyndsey promises “Dudes will dig it too.”
Reading through Lyndsey’s descriptions, I’m most excited to hear the power-poppy “Before We Come Undone”, the ballad, “Bring it Back” (his London collab with Eg White), “Let the Rain” (Kris’s song about compromising with TPTB) and, of course, “Red Guitar”, a song Kris wrote pre-Idol.
The funky “Can’t Stay Away” sounds promising. Since I’m a fan of “Live Like We’re Dying” I expect to like the Script-penned “Written All Over My Face” too.
And I fully expect to be on the same page with Lyndsey regarding the mid-tempo ballad, “The Truth”. The song was Lyndsey’s least favorite. I’m not a big fan of mid-tempo ballads, especially if they’re written by anybody from Train.
After the jump, the songs and who wrote ‘em. Make sure to read Lyndsey’s full review HERE.
- “Before We Come Undone” – Kris Allen, Lindy Robbins (various Idols, Lisa Loeb, Faith Hill, Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez), and Greg Kurstin (Lily Allen, the Bird & The Bee, the Flaming Lips, Kylie Minogue) – an “Uptempo Power-pop rocker”
- “Can’t Stay Away” – Kris Allen with Mike Elizondo (a Dr. Dre protg who’s penned songs for Eminem, Busta Rhymes, Mary J. Blige, and 50 Cent, as well as alt-country chanteuse Shelby Lynne and singer-songstress Poe) Elizondo co-wrote “Cowboy Casanova” with Carrie Underwood – Kris gets “Fresh and Funky…blue eyed soul”
- “The Truth” – Pat Monahan of Train and Pat Gadd…NOT co-written by Kris. Lindsey’s least favorite of the 7, a “mid-tempo ballad”
- “Written All Over My Face” – Penned by two Scriptmates along with Andrew Frampton (Natasha Bedingfield, Kylie, Delta Goodrem) and Steve Kipner (produced Olivia Newton-John’s “Physical” and Christina Aguilera’s “Genie In A Bottle” ). Fans of “Live Like We’re Dying” will like this.
- “Bring It Back” – Kris Allen co-wrote it in London with Eg White (Adele, Duffy, James Morrison, and Sam Sparro) “a ballad, hearkening back to the understated Kris America fell in love with…more heartland soft-rocking than brit-poppy)
- “Let The Rain” – Kris Allen with Tobias Karlsson (an affiliate of Carolina Liar) – The lyrics “grapple with Kris’s sometimes frustrating experience of…having to compromise with the powers that be at Jive and 19″. Lindsey calls it one of the stronger songs. She calls it “single potential”.
- “Red Guitar” – Kris Allen – A song he wrote a year and a half ago! “…fits in perfectly with the other songs, following the album’s failsafe soft-verse/exploding-pop-chorus formula to a T.”

Does anyone know if Kris will be singing some of the songs from the album at the various Jingle Balls?
happygolucky, grats on getting tickets to the Sacramento show. I look forward to hear your reports back on it.
I wonder when the interview well be up from Lyndsey with Kris. I just can’t wait until the 17th. I so bad want to hear Red Guitar, Bring it back,Let the rain, And isn’t I love LLWD Am sure excited for Written all over my face,Bring it back to tell the truth all 7 sound so great. And then 4 more that we don’t know nothing about yet. Besides were hoping the one Jim is talking about makes the cut. And since I bought the i-tune pass i’ll probably take a nap earlier in the day and then stay up after I download it and listen like crazy to it. And there not coming to get are stuff until the 18 and 19. The only bad thing is I’ll miss him on the shows his going on to.
Just to mess with your plan… LLWD was actually up on iTunes at about 11PM (Eastern) the night before the official release date. I don’t know if the iTunes pass download will be ready right away, or if we’ll have to wait for the morning – but there will be a lot of high-strung Kris fans (me among them) if they can’t get to the music the minute it is available to the rest of the buying public
I so agree with you kt_cle. And I’ll probably listen to it over and over again on are moving day. It well be a pretty long trip. I live in Fort Campbell,Ky right now and moving to Fort Drum NY. Well it won’t be that long because I just forget were going to my mom’s for a few days and we’re leaving from there. But me do have 3 kids so it will still be pretty long.
Happy: Good for you, I am ~excite also. I actually sent my daughter a text last night seeing if she wanted me to pick her up at college on my 12-hour road trip to Sacramento to see Kris! She’s totally down for a whirlwind road trip odyssey, so maybe we’ll see you there, although I’m hoping for a Jingle Bell concert a little closer to home …
Boy, who would have known that being a dedicated Kris fan would take one a such a roller coaster ride. I have been bummed over the i tunes sales, but I am so psyched today after reading the review for the tracks. I can hardly wait to get the CD in my hands. Hopefully it is everything that I dream it will be.

Was there a second review somewhere?
Delurk ALert!!
I had to! had to come out from hiding for this post!
This entire post and comments just made of win win win!
And MJ great work… this post has been clear of any bloodshed or name calling!! (Not Jinxing!) I’m just so pleased and soo proud! of Kris Allen!
Red Guitar! Bring It Back! Can’t Stay Away!
Also soooo need ‘I need to know’, and Collabs with Mat Kearney & Daughtry!!!
The review is just sooo good esp from someone who’s not Fan Girly about Kris (though she has grown to like him, inspite of herself.)
You know, I think Kris along with Jive/19 — all this while, they’ve been working on making a sucessful album instead of JUST a SUPERHIT Single…
Kris might seem too slight or too normal at first glance — but that’s just at first. He’s the kind of artist that grows on … It’s what happened on idol — I’m thinking, the same pattern will follow with this album and his career.
It’s about longevity, people!! Sucessful Album is better than 1 sucessful single. And looks like majority of Kris Allen PR appearances have been saved for promoting his ALBUM!
Also….. Mike Elizondo, I think, I might be totally wrong, but wasn’t he there with Kris and Daughtry in LA for their writing session?
Are we sure there’s a seperate Allen + Daughtry collab?!
Maybe Daughtry just introduced the two of them, maybe he’s not really part of the collab?
Though I know Daughtry did mention on his twitter that he did work with Kris on a track…. Colour me confused (My own doing!)
Welcome Seeker! It’s nice to have another Kris fan here!
yep he’s the one..i’m too lazy to find the link but i remember MJ posted some months back a photo of all of them
and welcome seeker (you dont play Quidditch by any chance do you?)
Hey Cookcricket (IKR!)
& SarahP! (Nope, I’m not after Golden Snitches but luvs HP!– both of them!)
Here the link BTW:

Yeah figured it’s the same guy — that’s why I was wondering, if they came up with two songs from that session (1 with Mike & 1 with Daughtry) or just ‘Can’t Stay Away’.
Coz I don’t think Kris had more sessions with either of them after the one in LA.
Has He? Anyone?
Don’t have time to read the comments (and I know probably nobody’s reading this anyway because there’s a lot of newer stuff) but I just have to say: AHHH this made me so excited!! I’m glad Kris has so many writing credits, too.
Ah Danielle I’m here …. I’m flailing with u !!!
Yeah I keep coming back and check once in awhile too. And still haven’t came down from my high. And only got a few hours of sleep last night.
I’m checked back a few times too! Looks like a new interview was put up!
I’m stil so excited! And now a 15 min interview – wow is all I can say right now.
