Kristy Lee Cook Signs with 19 Recordings – Single Due 8/11, Album in the Fall

From USA Today:

American Idol finalist Kristy Lee Cook has signed with 19 Recordings/Arista Nashville. Her first single, 15 Minutes of Shame, arrives Aug. 11, and the album follows in the fall. The album is being produced by Brett James, who co-wrote Jesus, Take the Wheel for former Idol champion Carrie Underwood. The signing marks the return for Cook, 24, to Arista Nashville. She was signed to the label as a teen but dropped before recording anything. Cook will record her album while touring with American Idols Live, which kicks off Tuesday in Glendale, Ariz., and runs through Sept. 13.

I’m not super-surprised, she was signed, although I thought they’d sign Brooke White first–her sound is pretty hot right now.

Congratulations Kristy Lee. She’s entering a very crowded field of pretty blonde fair-to-middlinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ country singers in Nashville. Weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll see if she can distinguish herself from the pack.

If Kristy Lee’s single is dropping on Aug 11, I wonder when David Cook and David Archuleta will release their singles? Sooner rather than later, I would think.

Skylight, I agree KLC is between Kellie and Carrie.

  • bigmjfan:

To the person above that said Josh Gracin didnt have good songs but Bucky did. I am not sure if you meant it like that is why he hasnt had success. He actually has had way more success then Bucky and somewhat better then Kellie. He has had a number one hit, two top fives and his album was almost platnum.

  • I was skeptical when Kellie Pickler was signed (she really wasn’t all that great on the show) and was pleasantly surprised by her success. But Kellie has something KLC does not have and that’s an amazing personality, great sense of humor, plus the voice. KLC seems bland to me, ala Carrie but without the great voice. She’ll probably do numbers like Bucky, not bad, but not in KP’s league.

I would bet a few of the others cough*Carly*cough are just a teensy bit jealous about now! Oh, they play like they’re all great buddies, but for KLC to get signed an no one else…

It also strikes me as just a little odd that she’s signed to the same label she was dumped from. Interesting to say the least.

  • Lu:

I’m very surprised because Simon seemed very lukewarm about KLC. He was jazzed about Pickler and Daughtry so I wasn’t surprised when they were signed. hmmm… interesting

  • jpfan:

I had heard a rumor that only one runner up would be signed by 19R. That’s why I said no signing for Jason, etc. Who knows though? I’m was surprised they signed Kristy although blondes in country are doing really great these days.

It just seems odd that they needed a season of Idol to resign KLC.

The best publicity in the world maybe? Nobody knew who she was before Idol.

They still have about 7 weeks to pick up anyone else they may choose to.

  • Natasha:

I’m thinking this was in the works all along. Can you say ‘ringer’? She was already signed to this label once before and now she’s going back with a lot of publicity.

I never thought 19E would sign Jason or Brooke even though they were very popular and people really want them to get signed. I did think they might sign Carly though so that surprises me a little.

  • Kat:

    My predictions:

    1. KLC’s album will be nothing but dreck that panders to the lowest common denominator.
    2. She will sell very, very well.

  • skylight1219:

Dreck is very popular these days. So, yeah, it’ll probably sell very well.

I would love to know what factors they consider when they choose to sign or not sign. I think they have tunnel-vision. If it worked once….

I’m not big into pop country and don’t really care for any female country singers that aren’t dead. Well, maybe Wynonna. I prefer male voices and traditional old style country. Carrie/Kellie/Kristy don’t do anything for me though I think Pickles is cute as a button. I much prefer Bucky.

  • StevenD:

They havenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t said that Kristy Lee is the only Idol that they are signing this year just the first (after the winner and the runner up) and that could be because she presented a close to finished single that they liked or had someone that wanted to work with her. Also with respect to her she comes cheaper then Underwood or Pickler would so that might help.

I think sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s an excellent choice for a contract and have been saying so for a while. I think she is all American beautiful with a good voice that sounds good recorded and could be even better in a studio surrounding and Country has always done well for Idol.

I also liked her personality and think she could have a big career. I also think that their will be announcements on some of the Idols during and right after the tour.

  • idolbeat:

StevenD, I agree. I will eat my hat if 7 or 8 are not signed when it is all said and done!

  • sumidol:

I hope she does well, I am not a big fan of country though. I will have to listen to Anyway and maybe it will change my opinion of her. It is hard for me to get past the picture in my mind and head of her singing that Beatles song. That was pretty funny and I really couldnt take her too seriously after that.

  • JOJOSIE:

Not surprised, but wish Carly would be picked up by 19E also. My other favorite that didn’t win MJ I think will do okay. In season 5 both Pickler and Daughtry had albums out before the winner. I think Do I Make You Proud is considered Taylor’s single and it was out right after the show ended. I wish they would put out a record of TOML as I enjoy having one as kind of a keepsake. As per Melinda and Elliott, both great singers , but you have to have looks or charisma or both these days (not fair). IMO Elliott would not have been so successful with out relatives in the recording business to guide him despite having talent. It’s a tough business. Daughtry has done better than I expected and I think the record company felt he wouldn’t do as well as a solo artist, not bad looking, but not much stage presence so they developed the band to make him saleable and it worked, big time. TPTB I think feel Cookie can succeed without a band as he owns the stage all on his own. I hope the ones that really want careers in music have their dreams come true.

  • Tony:

IMO Elliott would not have been so successful with out relatives in the recording business to guide him despite having talent.

I have to disagree. I think it was Elliott’s talent that got him recognized, cousin or not. Which is why Elliott didn’t have a recording deal before Idol. He didn’t magically gain a cousin after Idol–he was always there.

have to disagree on both points. I’ve seen Elliott perform several times. He has great stage presence. He’s come a long way in the last couple years. “Looks” are in the eye of the beholder. If he & his model gf ever broke up, I have no doubt there’d be a long line of honey’s waiting to take her place.

He had one relative in the business that gave him guidance but knowing pros in the biz doesn’t guarantee anything. Look at all these kids that get signed by big record labels that have many professionals guiding them. Many of them have tanked.

Elliott worked his butt off promoting himself. He travelled from city to city doing radio tours. The stations played his music because they liked his voice and they liked him (talent plus charisma).

  • StevenD:

I wouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t be surprised if they record a country version of Faithfully with her. If you ever get a chance on her first disc she recorded a great song called à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Devotedà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ that I thought showcased some powerful country vocals.

I honestly think that with Idol not having a female rock pop singer with a strong voice that they will also sign Carly or at least make sure sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s signed and keep a percentage of it. I also think that Michael Johns and Jason (as long as he proves heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s serious about the business) will be the other two sure bets to be signed.

  • 1. KLCà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s album will be nothing but dreck that panders to the lowest common denominator.
    2. She will sell very, very well.

    Yup!

  • jobbix:

It all depends on radio play, which Elliott got for one reason or another, for just one song. Unfortunately or fortunately, Kat, Blake, and even Taylor didn’t have such luck. If Bucky Covington can be hailed as a success story, so can KLC…

  • According to this article, KLC is currently on vocal rest. (I posted the link in the headlines thread, too. It’s a nice article, with video, with the girls of the Top 10.)

  • blairw:

She doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have the X-Factor. 19 is going to lose ALOT of money on her just like they did with Kat. I predict that Phil will have higher sales than KLC.

i think with her it’ll will all come down to the single/songs.

and btw katharine was never with 19M. first she was with azoff and now guy oseary

  • gabam:

Congrats to Kristy. I’m not a fan but I wish her well.

I sincerely hope that 19E, 19M nor 19R signs Jason. He needs more creative control than they would probably allow. He said that he likes to take his time to connect to songs he sings. Rushing to put out a CD would not be ideal for him. I hope he gets a deal similar to Elliott’s. Jason is already a songwriter so maybe he will get a publishing deal first and then a virtual record label deal built around him too. (A girl can dream.)

Since Jason has written on his blog that he will release a CD in winter or spring, he must have something in the works. I remember during Jason’s radio interview while he was home for his hometown celebration, he and his mom said that they (and others) were up late the previous night making career decisions.

Kellie released her single and her CD first. I guess Kristy will do the same. I remember how excited Kellie was to hear her first single on the radio while they were on tour. Kellie co-wrote a lot of her songs. I wonder if Kristy is a songwriter.

Whomever is not signed by one of the Sony/BMG companies probably won’t be allowed to sign with anyone until three months after the finale.

Doesn’t 19 take a huge share of the artist’s cut? I thought I read that sometimes during Season 5.

I wonder who else they will sign. Probably MJ and/or Carly.

  • SpenserJ:

I don’t think either Brooke or Jason has a prayer of being signed by any of the 19 labels. I just hope they get picked up by someone, so that I can buy their cd’s.

I’m confused by Michael Johns’ involvement with Diane Warren and David Foster. I thought he wanted to go with more of a rock vibe. But, those two are pretty far in the opposite direction. Perhaps MJ secretly wants to be the next Celine Dion? LOL

  • Caffiend:

I’m not surprised by this. Kristy has wholesome good looks, a great smiile, a better-than-average voice, and — sorry! — plenty of personality. More than Underwood had at this stage! Remember her farewell song? I think she showed a lot of guts and toughness on AI. I dig her. I’ll buy her CD.
