Melinda Doolittle to Release Album “Coming Back To You in January 09

Good news for you Melinda Doolittle fans! She’s set to release her debut album titled, Coming Back to You on Hi-Fi Recordings in January 09. Produced by Grammy-nominated producer Mike Mangini (Joss Stone, Run DMC, The Jonas Brothers), Coming Back to You was recorded with a team of live musicians in Nashville and New York City.

The first single, “It’s Your Love” will be released to radio in October.

“I’m so excited to be using live instruments and to be singing music that really paints a picture,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ said Melinda. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“I knew my task was to just go in the studio and be me and the music would take care of the rest.”

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Melinda is a hugely talented vocalist and performer, and we are honored to be the home of her debut album,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ commented Hi Fi Recordings Chairman/CEO John Hecker. John Titta, President/COO of Hi Fi Recordings, also noted, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Melindaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s album is one of the most exciting that weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve heard in years à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ a throwback to the classic soul albums of the 70à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s with a modern twist that will undoubtedly capture the ear of todayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s music fan. We canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t wait for everyone to hear what she can do.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

The press release promises that the 13 cuts on Coming Back to You will be an eclectic mix:

From the first horn blasts of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Declaration of Love,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ listeners will feel a driving pulse and unstoppable energy that is reminiscent of Tina Turnerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s iconic hits, while à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Coming Back to Youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Wonderfulà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ feature Melindaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s silky voice wrapped around the smooth, sleek sounds of classic R&B. Melinda commands the emotional storytelling and funky delivery of the blues in à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Dust My Broomà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Walkinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ Bluesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ , and her impeccably artful and expressive voice has never been more on display than on the beautifully lush ballad à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll Never Stop Loving Youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and the stripped down jazzy melody of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Wonder Why.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

Melinda seems like the perfect candidate for the Smooth Jazz and Adult Contemporary radio formats. She’s never going to be a pop star, but she could have a decent career in the AC niche, where she fits very well.

What do you think? Are you looking forward to Melinda’s new album?

Good for Melinda! I was never the biggest fan of her performance style, but she is so talented. I can totally see her having a great impact in the world of AC/Smooth Jazz. She could fit in the same niche as a Joss Stone or Natalie Cole. Actually, I’m encouraged that she has the same producer as Joss Stone. We could get a great combo of vocal power and throwback style, but with modern arrangements. Color me intrigued.

  • Are you looking forward to Melindaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s new album?

I think I heard a snippet of “It’s Your Love” a few weeks ago. A very brief snippet. Sounded very old school. I believe I shall love it.

    MELINDA!!!!!!!! I am thrilled. :clap_tb: :clap_tb: :clap_tb:

Go Mindy Doo! I’ve always had a soft spot for her and am glad she seems to be landing on her feet. Can’t wait to hear her music–

  • clee1107:

She was my fav in season 6. I’m so happy to hear good news from her. I’ll definitely check that out!

  • beesims:

Very good news. IMHO Melinda was the most gifted song stylist ever to appear on Idol. I keep thinking that if she had the looks of a Carrie or a Katherine, she would have been snapped up by a major label a long time ago.

  • Layla:

Yeah Melinda…love her voice and style. Actually think I may buy this.

  • gingerly:

I’m very anxious to hear it. I may even buy it and I’ve yet (until November 18) bought an Idol album. I’m hopeful about it hearing about 70’s soul and blues.

  • Layla:

I, too, have never bought an Idol album…. first time will be on 18 November.

But I remember really loving Melinda…especially when she sang “My Funny Valentine”. Hope she stays true to the style of singing that suits her best and shows off her voice.

Congrats to Melinda. I’m happy for this awesome news. She was my favorite from Season 6 too. January is a tough release month. I hope that her CD will be a success and that her music career will take off big time.

I’m really intrigued by what Melinda might put out on an album. I lovelovelove her voice, and Funny Valentine is one of my all-time favorite performances on AI, so I hope this cd is as good as it sounds. Classic soul with a modern twist sounds really good, but you can never believe press releases.

  • Yay! Can’t wait!

  • abbysee:

I love Melinda. Her cd sounds exactly like something she should be doing. A perfect fit. She is a Tina Turner/Natalie Cole hybrid. A little bit rock and a lot of soul. Can’t wait.

  • emwcee:

She was my favorite on Season 6. I’ll definitely be checking out her album and I’ll probably buy it.

  • Coming Back To You is overflowing with Melinda’s thrilling vocals that rescue us from the fix-it-with-Pro Tools sound of many singers today. Melinda is so good at so many genres that no one CD could hold her talent – unless it was defined as “an eclectic mix”. ;-)

BTW: I don’t see Carrie or Daughtry being hampered by their lack of Pop Star-ness. Less we forget that pop really is short for popular and not short for appeals only to 20 and under (btw: a demographic in which Melinda has many fans).
YES!!! :thumbup_tb: I am looking forward to the next musical offering from Ms. Doolittle; and the next and the next…
