Longtime lurker, first time poster. MJ, I just want to say thank you, thank you, thank you for all your post-Idol Michael Johns coverage. I’m a huge fan of his and very disappointed that his Idol experience was over so quickly. At least we have all his interviews, thanks to you!
MJ, Hi, the video of Michael on Regis is not working. It says “invalid streaming server destination”. Thanks!
P.S. AI is just not the same for me now, and I am a long time viewer of the show. I am sad not only about Michael’s ouster but also about the arrogant way Ryan ousted him. Any apology he may make is likely to be lame. I can already imagine Simon or Randy trying to diminish it. Their apologies have not been sincere in the past.
I know I won’t ever bother to vote for anyone on the show again; glad I can find clips of performances here so I can do other things with Tuesday and Wednesday nights–like watch the Biggest Loser live finale.
Dusty, try it again. I think it’s working now.
Michelle–Welcome! :)
He sounded somewhat like Taylor Hicks on Regis and Kelly.
Looooooooove Michael Johns. Great guy, no bitterness. He’ll be big. I’m sure of it.
Fantastic performance MJ. Love that sooo sinful soul sound
MJohns sounds nothing like Taylor, and he’s better to look at :)
anyway, he’s got a good future ahead. I can’t say the same for David H., Rami and Danny.
Michael has that soul sound …..like Taylor. You cannot Fake it. You either have it or you DON’T. Michael and Taylor HAVE it. They may not “sound alike” but they both have the Soul sound.
It is like opinions….we all have them. They may not be the same but we have them still. And while SOME think that only Their opinion is Correct…..just because they think it doesn’t make it so. Sometimes people repeat the same thing over and over…..this doesn’t make something true either…….Oh and just beause I said it only makes it SO in my mind.
I went to R&K today and got to meet him after the show. Very nice guy and super hot!
IMO, Michael did not sound good on Regis & Kelly. He sounded a lot better when he sang the song on AI. There was something “off” with the way he performed the song. Maybe he was tired. Michael Orland (sp?) was not playing piano for him. No substitute ever sounds as good as he does when he plays for the booted contestants, IMO.
I listened to MJ’s performance on R&K without looking at the video, and then listened to his AI performance of it without looking at anything, either. I agree with gabam; there was something “off” about this R&K performance. His voice sounded strained in some areas; his voice was getting hoarse on a few of the higher notes. I think his Idol performance was much better, although it was probably because he had the full band and backups behind him. He still did a pretty good job, here, though.
I enjoyed the performance this morning. The acoustics in that studio are horrible, with just a piano he did a great job. And I too think that performance does remind me of Taylor, last Tuesday I actually though ‘what if Taylor had gotten hold of that song for country night’.
I hope that he has some good offers on the table cause I really like his sound.
Lucky you, Tracy.
I thought he sounded pretty good when I listened earlier. What I like about Michael is that he can sound great doing a bluesy number but also doing rock and ballads.
I’ve already said this on another thread but I really enjoyed the interview. It sounds like he’s enjoying himself and things are looking good for his future. I think a lot of us are going to be missing him tomorrow night.
Nice feature with Michael Johns (He will also sing later in the show) on today’s Access Hollywood. There was a promo for him also to be on Extra for today’s show earlier today.
I will really miss him tomorrow when they all sing. I wonder if he will show up on TV Guide’s Idol pre-show on Wednesday this week or next.
I recorded Access Hollywood but haven’t seen it yet. At TWOP they were talking about David Foster asking him to appear on some show. Ricky went to see Michael come out of R&K and has tape of him taking pics with fans and then leaving. It looks like his wife was there with him.
He is reminescent of Taylor — voice is more gravelly — ’s-alright with me !
Nice interview, nice cute guy.
Access Hollywood has a few different video clips up of Michael with David. This one here he makes him sing Aint No Sunshine and its gorgeous. He keeps making him sing high, low, back and forth

When he sings in a very soft voice you see David get excited and says its hot
He asked him if he would like a slot to be part of his concert in Vegas featuring Josh Groban, Andrea Bocelli and Michael Buble. I’m getting shades of Kat here.
Wow! That was great. It shows how creating an arrangement can be very collaborative and what a good producer can do for you. David had some great ideas for bringing more texture to the performance. Ideas that Michael could have benefited from during the competition.
This is what you see the real mentors like Barry and Rod. I think Tommy Mottola is a bit of a creep (and he wasn’t very nice to all the contestants), but he did have good advice for tweaking performances to make them better.
Maybe AI needs to hire a music producer to help out the vocal coach. I’m all for better performances. And in real life, none of these kids are going to make their first AI album without a producer.
I’m not saying that David Foster is some kind of magical producer (although, he certainly has his list of hits). I’m just saying that a good producer can bring new ideas to the table and melding new ideas is what creates magic. BTW David Foster really likes injecting those high notes near the end doesn’t he. That didn’t work out to well for Miss Pickler.
I really enjoyed the video clips. It’s interesting to see what working with a producer can do. I think the problem on AI is that the vocal coaches aren’t supposed to help them too much with the arrangement and that’s really where they need it since they have to limit the songs so much. I think they want the idols to sink or swim on their own.
Thank you for the videos, mj and Trina.
Ooh…I’d love to hear a full version of Aint No Sunshine by Michael.
Here’s his interview by my sorta-BF last year, Jared Cotter, on The Sauce… ;)
