Thanks for posting MJ! I heard that too about Michael wanting to perform this for 80’s week and being told the song wasn’t well known enough…I can’t even imagine what the reaction would have been if he sung this. Just amazing. FYI, this vid was shot and posted by mj_my_hometown_hero who is on MJO and happens to be from Perth (hence the name).

This performance was AMAZING! It’s so great to see Michael playing the guitar. This song would have gone over really well if he had been allowed to perform it on Idol. It’s just perfect for him.

What’s up with those dancing girls. I wish Michael would’ve just thrown them off stage. LOL!
LOL Apparently Michael didn’t really have any say in having the dancers up there with him…I guess it’s a tradition at the Perth Telethon to feature local dance groups on the show and they featured them with Michael! he is amazingly awkward with them and basically runs away from them during Gimme Some Lovin’, so great!

But still… Michael Johns was still sexy rocking it.
So sad that we didn’t hear Michael do “Never Tear us Apart” on AI. “Gimme some Loving” would have been another good one for him. I’m over him getting punted 8th but hearing these brings it back again, lol. Loved “Fire” also and he’s pretty hot in a suit/tie. The dancers not so much.

The girls reminded me of the back-up dancers on the British show where they were looking for a new Joseph for Joseph & and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Every once in awhile, they would have these bizarre, lame dancers behind the contestants. I decided it must be a British thing, that they never got past the kind of dancers we would’ve seen behind Dean Martin in the Golddiggers of 1968.
Loved MJ’s version of Never Tear Us Apart! I say nix those girls too. lol

Yeah I don’t actually think they were doing this to work against Michael, at this point they were loving him and I think the producers thought they were helping Michael out. Personally I think they were wrong, but I really like Don’t You Forget About Me, so no hard feelings…at least about this one!
Not well know enough? Pffft. Nigel and Co are seriously delusional. My guess is that they didn’t want to fork over the $$$. I just looked it up and it hit #7 here in the US. How is that not well known? I remember my friends and I used to hang out at the Russian house and play “Kick” over and over again while we “studied.” Ahem.
Anyway, everyone knows that AI is cheap. Apparently, it was supposed to be in the opening sequence of the original release of “Donnie Darko” but was replaced because the rights were too expensive. I’m guessing the same thing happened on AI. Too bad.
I really wish MJ had found a way to show off who he was as an artist on the show. He showed early promise from the auditions, and never lived up to the initial hype. He’s obviously mad talented. I wish he had done more soulful stuff, because that’s where he really shines. Maybe he should have played guitar at least once.
I didn’t know MJ played guitar. I love his rendition of Never Tear Us Apart. I am looking forward to his CD and hopefully these type of soulful songs will be on it.

Michael played the guitar accompanying Across The Universe on the Mike and Juliet Show in the days following his elimination. Michael has said that he wanted to concentrate on the singing and didn’t want to play guitar on AI. IMO, I think he should have gone for it with ATU.

I never did get why the judges weren’t impressed with him when he did Across the Universe as it was one of my favorites. I hadn’t seen the Mike and Juliet show version, thanks mcm for posting it. Lots of love here for Michael.

ATU was one of my favorite performances by Michael on AI, and he definitely did not receive the credit he deserved for that.
Looking forward to hearing more from Michael. The single, his duet with Carly and the CD can’t come fast enough for me.
