Michael Johns to Guest on New Air Supply Album – Listen to “Hold On”

Season 7 Idol, Michael Johns must not care if you all think he’s hip or not.

Michael’s latest gig? He’s guest appearing on the new album from 80’s schmaltz-rockers, Air Supply. The new album, Mumbo Jumbo, set to be released May 4, features Michael on a cut called “Hold On”.

Update:  Listen to “Hold On” below (It’s a duet. OMG. The song is crap, and their voices sound horrible together. Blech)

For those of you too young to remember (or have brain-bleached them out of your mind), Air Supply was the ultimate soft-rock band of the late 70’s and early 80’s. Treacly love ballads, such as “All Out Of Love”, Love or Nothing at All” and “Making Love Out of Nothing At All” were huge hits back in the day.

They were popular, but generally, I could not switch the dial fast enough when one of the band’s pasteurized processed cheese-fests came on my radio. Hello bland and banal…

I still dig you Michael, really I do. But Air Supply? Seriously? Argh!

If you aren’t familiar with the Air Supply oeuvre, check out the video after the jump. “Even the Nights Are Better” was a hit for the band back in 1982. Eep.

Aww, I love Air Supply, guilty pleasure! They were my favorite band when I was 3 (seriously). But this song? Just no.

  • Grammie Kari:

Awwww, MJ you have me laughing out loud! Besides the Temptations, there is only one other group I saw in concert FOUR times! Yep, it was Air Supply. They were my favorite group while falling in love for the second time.

Maybe the song will sound better on the album?

  • Lu:

    THIS is a fun thread!!!!

I’m all out of love. I’m so lost withou hout you…

I LOVED “Air Supply” back in my teenage years (I was young and in & out of love–I loved cheesy love songs).

However, this is horrible. Poor Michael. Hopefully he gets more opportunities. I have a friend that knew him before idol, she said he is an awesome guy. I have to remember to show this to her.

  • Buderschnookie:

    This is just tragic :(

  • Allison:

Air Supply – yuch – but I really didn’t expect him to have any taste.

  • lucy:

Oh, dear. I’m sorry that the sort of cheesy-as-heck vibe I tend to get from Michael seems to be borne out here. On the other hand, cheesiness sometimes seems to pay the rent better than good taste does.

  • martha:

Air supply is fantastic. Their song “Chances” is STILL one of my all time favorites. I would love to hear Adam sing that song-it is applicable to everyone one time or another or even again.

  • “How about this new song Michael has written called “The Only One”- he has put a 30 second snippet on twitter. I think its quite catchy -

I think its interesting that there has been no comment on Michael’s new song snippet that I posted earlier , so I thought I’d post again to see if anyone has an opinion on this. This has also been out there on Twitter – so it would be good to have a balance of what he is doing now!!

  • Nina1:

Clearly, I didn’t recognize just how ambitious Mr. Johns would be on his express ticket to obscurity.

Snark just doesn’t get any better than that. You got the gold.

    I am humbled and grateful :) .

Idol and Air Supply have had a long relationship — anyone else besides me remember Carrie doing this one?

  • lakies:

This was not nearly as bad as it was made out to be. Michael doesn’t sing until around 1:15… I heard three different voices on this and the second voice sounded like a singer from Styx! I don’t know who the first voice was. But MJ sounded good …. I’m a fan of MJ, what can I say. Yes, it’s 80’s schmaltzy…but I have some of those 80’s records in my collection. ;)

  • Sorry about the double post

  • Lakies- thank you I thought I was the only fan of Michael’s left around here!!
The first 2 singers were the Air Supply guys & Michael is only heard towards the end & in the harmonies. I happen to think the harmonies are great- we don’t hear enough of it these days. Its what I love when Kris sings with Cale – their harmonies are great.
Lakies- did you check out Michael’s new song snippet that I listed above?

Actually – Michael has been busy ever since he left the idol stage & is doing very nicely for himself. I think that different people have a different perspective on success- & to me if Michael is able to get paid consistently doing something he loves – then that is what is important!!
He is a great live performer & he has been asked to come back & do live gigs all over the place – that is his real skill [ as against many more "famous " performers who can't sing live for anything *cough*Brittany*cough*!!!]!

Good points! David Foster wouldn’t keep including him if he weren’t capable. :)
