Are you saying there is something wrong with that?

Nope. Read my original post in observing Taylor’s post-idol career… It is my observation. It is what it is.

I always find that the more PC we become as a Society, the more we stereotype. Interesting..

Believe me, I am not one of the PC folks.

But there IS a basis for garnering/culling your observation, otherwise, there would be little point in observing markets.

Call it stereotyping if you wish, but we all engage in it in one form or another ( and I don’t really think it is always a bad thing or untruthful ).

It’s really hard to say anything when a guy named YOUNG JEEZY whose album is rated R with explicit lyrics outsells Taylor Hicks by 50,000 units ( relegating his debut to #2 ) and sells platinum. And Young Jeezy isn’t even shy to tell us what his theme is… one of his big seller is THUG MOTIVATION.

Well, it does tell you a lot about the state of our music today. I still find it appalling that you feel you need to curse and degrade women to express yourself in a recording studio. But some said it was “freedom of expression,” and now we have to live with it.

Where is Carrie Underwoood mostly doing her tours even though she has sold almost five million cds.

Her market is DIFFERENT. Country is perhaps, in terms of record-buying numbers, very big.

Big cities in the South play it and Country crosses-over to the mainstream.

I would estimate Carrie Underwood and Kellie Pickler’s niche to be somewhere north of 30 million potential CD buyers/listeners. If you’re lucky and good and get just 5 to 10% of that market, you have at minimum, 1.5 million albums to sell.

Taylor’s throwback market of blues/soul/funk music today has probably a maximum size of one third that of Country ( about 10 million ).

With that, you’d be extremely lucky and ought to be extremely well received to crack the platinum level.

That is why TPTB aren’t as enthusiastic about Taylor winning AI as they are about Carrie winning ( and you can understand the pimping Simon gave to Kellie Pickler ). They want to sell “units” and Taylor’s brand of Ray Lamontagne-like music is hard to sell in today’s music world.

Well I live in a large city in Texas. I am female and over 30 and dang it all if I don’t buy cd’s and download music. I bought and paid for a Taylor Hicks cd. Imagine that. I also downloaded Chris’ cd. I will also probably purchase Bucky’s. I also will be purchasing Nora Jone’s cd. Between myself, my husband, and my son…we buy a lot of music. People over 30 actually do buy and enjoy music. I actually listened to a metal cd of my son’s a few days ago. yikes.

  6. 356 SEXYGIRL Feb 20th, 2007 at 1:12 am

Unfortunately in Taylor’s case, most naysayers think that fans my gender and my age are something to snicker at.

Makes you wonder what it would be like when they ge to your age.

And oh yeah, he hasn’t sold out the famous, Beacon in NYC either, but has sold out Westbury ( a suburb in Long Island ).

Well considering he hasn’t done much promo for the Beacon and Tickets just went on sale last week, in which I brought one, I would say he is doing pretty good.

    4) Most ( not all ) Radio stations in metro areas with population greater than 2 million do not seem to want to play his single, while stations in cities with smaller population are the ones picking his single up and giving him airplay.

LLB, question, do you follow an artist because they are keeping up with what everyone else is doing or because you like them?
Are you one of those disgruntled fans who just can’t except Taylor for who he is? Who feels that if Taylor is not keeping up with “the Jones” he is not doing well? I’m really curious..

I guess it’s hard to celebrate his success when one’s so busy looking at where he is not.. I’ll tell you, IMO, It does make for a very unhappy fan when your favorite is not where you feel he/she should be. Even though realistically, there’s nothing is wrong with where they are at.

Honestly, if Taylor can have Nora jones career, I’ll be happy. She has managed to do quite well without big radio stations playing her music. I really hope that one day all the cynicism surrounding Taylor will die.

OK, this has probably been discussed mucho times, but, if Taylor won a million dollar contract, does that mean he GETS a million dollars worth of production, promotion, pimping etc? If not, and if others now get their cd’s released first, what is the payoff for being the winner? What does winning a million dollar contract effin mean anyway?

My personal belief is the Idol winners’ “prize” is that the first $1 million of their recording contract is not subject to recoupment; it is the only explanation that makes any sense at all.

beesims - I can’t believe you remember that recap…i don’t even remember that recap!!! :)

Anyways - I’m so with you!! I even had to spend some time over at the freakin idol forums (not even kidding right now) to get at least something other than than the tayloradoration vs chris vs ***(which i just realized is much more difficult to type than “kat”) posts. I thought that the arguing about album sales, demographics, conspiracies surrounding promotion, and all that shit would end eventually, but it looks like it’s still going strong. I’m sure other reasons why some of last seasons contestants are/aren’t selling well include the weather, global warming, britney’s new shaved head, anna nicole’s death, President’s day and so on and so forth. Frankly I could give a shit less.

Anyway - I can’t wait to make fun of all of the new contestants and hopefully find one lucky bastard that i can unhealthily obsess over and incorporate into my already odd dreams.

Let’s hope I don’t have to start a shitty blog of my own called “MPD’s Little Blog” just to get some season 6 action! That would not be a pretty site/sight. :)

  9. 359 madaboutu Feb 20th, 2007 at 1:21 am

I’d like to inject a little dose of reality ,as far as determining the fate of someone (Taylor in this case) who has been in the public eye for only about 14 months now……….can you say Jennifer Hudson? She was working on cruise ships until last year. I don’t think anyone on this blog is clairvoyant, and I think we have been down this road before with the same people, therefore I am going to drop it.

Taylor’s brand of Ray Lamontagne-like music is hard to sell in today’s music world.

How is Taylor’s music remotely like Ray LaMontagne’s music? OMG-Not even close. :wallbash_tb:

Speaking of how bad Taylor is at promoting himself, as stated by AFAN. I was watching the Fox’s live webcast of the Endymion Extravaganza special on Saturday night and I was shocked at how much the female announcer liked Taylor.

Some observations ( and this is an attempt at grabbing the largest common denominator, not ignoring certain exceptions ( like myself ) ):

    1) Taylor’s fans are mostly female.

    2) Taylor’s female fans are mostly above 30 years old.

    3) Taylor’s music is mostly appreciated in the South. In the South, Taylor’s music is mostly appreciated by small towners and suburbanites rather than big city folks.

    4) Taylor’s music is mostly appreciated by people who watch him perform live rather than merely listening to him.

    5) Taylor’s music is mostly geared towards ADULTS ( i.e. those who have long graduated from college and already have families ).

    6) Most of those who tend to love Taylor’s music are not CD buyers and probably have not bought a CD in years ( except for the ones of the “greatest hit compilation” variety ).

I welcome any refutations of the above generalized observations.

    ———————–

LBB, all that and $1.50 will get you a cheap cup of cold coffee.

Personally, I’m tired of hearing the same mantra repeated over and over when, in fact, it makes no difference.

All it does is make you feel important because you think you’ve determined the inth reason that Taylor hasn’t met whoever’s expectations or created enough waves. He’s fine and all this nonsense doesn’t matter although it does prolong nonsense. Pick a new idol and jumpstart your next obsession.

    Enough already. Thank you.

  14. 364 stickitinmybutt Feb 20th, 2007 at 1:30 am

speaking of season 6 (thanks for bringing it up stick…oh no problem). The show taped on Saturday (for the guys) and there are literally no spoilers online. Isn’t that weird? I got an e-mail on Friday at 3:30 PM from OCATV that said they were taping and I actually could have gotten tickets. But it was 3:30 PM and I live in Seattle and that’s just a little too short of notice. Anyway - has anybody heard anything about who sings what - or who does well? I really can’t stomach much of having to go to other sites for any sort of scoop….help a sista out!!!

  18. 368 SEXYGIRL Feb 20th, 2007 at 1:43 am

Taylor’s throwback market of blues/soul/funk music today has probably a maximum size of one third that of Country ( about 10 million ).

Since you seem to know what direction Taylor is going in musically, why be shocked or surpised that he’s not where you feel he should be. Taylor, just like those who market generic sounding music, deserves a chances at commercial success. I really don’t get the cynicism about his success when it appears as if you already knew where he was not going to be. It’s like being upset because the square peg won’t fit the round hole when you already knew it wasn’t.

Well, since AI is more in the business for themselves than these singers, I hope that Kellie, and Chris will desire more than just selling units. For as popular as the Spice Girls (Simon) were at one point, their career is now a distant memory. Real musican seek longivity in the music business because it’s their passion and the industry is hard to get into. TPTB at AI don’t care for longivity because these singers nothing but disposable products to them. That’s why I’m glad Taylor won. He is where he wants to be despite not amass the instant success as Chris or Carrie is having so far. I believe years from now, whether he’s back “under the radar” or not, he will be still doing what he’s doing right now.

By the way, I’ve listened to Taylor’s previous works and IMO, I can see Taylor having John Mayer type career with the right producers behind him. Altought Ray’s lyrics are a bit too depressing for me, I don’t see anything wrong with his music. His music is very similar to John Mayer’s but with less pop. Even thought you feel Taylor’s style is like Ray Lamontage he is on a different level now commercal wise. I’m sure if Ray was more commerical he would be more successful. But, I kinda feel Ray does not care to be too commercial. Some artist are quite happy where they are at. and, funny thing, so are their fans..

  19. 369 dave Feb 20th, 2007 at 1:47 am

leno was really just a commercial for AI6 really. it was okay. harmless banter. IMO.

Former ‘American Idol’ contestant Daughtry takes Hub City by storm

Hub City rock fans congregated in the Lone Star Events Center Sunday night to see Daughtry and a handful of bands from across the nation perform.

The concert was originally slated to be held at Jake’s Sports Cafe but, because of an incident involving the establishment last week, the show was moved to Lone Star.

Despite the change in venue, hundreds of fans lined-up outside the event center in anticipation of seeing former “American Idol” contestant Chris Daughtry and his band, which is simply known by his last name, perform for the first time in Lubbock…..

    Idol wave of success
Singing sensation Chris Daughtry holds his own among show alums

Let’s just get it out of the way: Chris Daughtry’s fifth-season elimination was arguably the most shocking moment in American Idol history. More so than Tamyra Gray’s abrupt boot in Season 1 and Jennifer Hudson’s scandalous Season 3 dismissal.

But Daughtry (much like Hudson, and very much unlike Gray) has more than capitalized on his 15 minutes of fame. Less than a year after his Idol experience, the bald rocker has eclipsed winner Taylor Hicks and runner-up Katharine McPhee in sales figures, visibility and viability.

“I knew exactly what I wanted to do,” Daughtry says days into a 50-plus city tour. He and his band perform Wednesday night at the Meridian in Houston……..

Amy Winehouse: a fine musician or a disaster waiting to happen?

…A demo she made ended up with Universal Island Records and at 19 she released “Frank,” to instant praise and a whole lot of attention she wasn’t exactly prepared for. She inserted stiletto into mouth with regular frequency, insulting both her record label and her management company, Brilliant/19, headed by Simon Fuller, the force behind the Spice Girls and “American Idol.” (Of her label she once said: “The marketing was (expletive), the promotion was terrible, everything was a shambles.”)

“I try to think about things before I say them nowadays,” she admits. “I’m a lot less defensive with this record. … I’m just so proud of it. I think the record speaks louder than any of my stupid actions or things that I say.”…

Sponsors do pay some (rarely all) of the costs associated with a concert. “How much” is negotiable. Quite a few of the Idols have had their concerts sponsored in whole or in part, starting with Kelly Clarkson.

Kelly’s first tour was only 8 dates and was not sponsored. Kelly and Clay’s co-headlining national tour, starting in Feb 2004 and was the first major sponsored tour. Their sponsor was Accu-View contacts.

Clay went on to his solo tour in the summer of 2004 sponsored by Disney, that was followed by a 3rd tour that year and was sponsored by McDonald’s.

Kelly’s first sponsored solo tour was in early 2005 and her sponsor was a razor company. Possibly Schick. Her last tour sponsor was Vitamin Water.

The only other Idols to tour as headliners were Ruben and Bo but their tours were spotty and unsponsored. Fantasia has not headlined a tour ever and Carrie opened for big name country stars until just recently, so only Clay and Kelly have had major sponsored tours of their own.

A day too late probably, but LBB,

    - I’m a Jersey girl.
    - I buy lots of CDs, downloads and subscribe to Sirius Radio.
    - I like Taylor’s recorded music as much as his performance.
    - My Husband likes Taylor’s music but the UTR stuff more than the new stuff. My Daughter who is 11 likes Taylor and his music.
    - The Beacon Theater tickets just went on sale and it’s a relatively large venue. If it’s not sold out yet, it shouldn’t surprise anyone, especially with three other concerts in the area.

I don’t think it’s surprising that Taylor’s most popular in the South so far. That’s where he’s from. I think things have to build from there. It doesn’t mean that he won’t ever have a sizable fanbase in the north.
