Phil’s no longer on the country charts? That’s too bad. Looks like he’ll have to look to the CCM market for some support…
“No Air” has entered the UK charts at #22 on downloads alone, #11 in Germany and is currently #1 in Australia! GO JORDIN! /o/
Kristen, how is TOML’s progress? I’ve been looking at rhe charts and stuff but I don’t know what’s generally considered good. It looks like his spins at pop are slowing down a lot I think?
I loved Phil last season. Kind of bummed he didn’t do better than he is. With the exception of Jordin season 6 really wasn’t a chart success huh?
It’s always hard to tell. It does look like it might be headed into a stall, but sometimes songs will do that and then suddenly do better (I seem to recall that Tattoo got stuck for a while before it went on to do really well). Big hit songs just seem to leapfrog up the chart adding an enormous amounts of spins per week (500-1000). This song has been dawdling up the charts but it’s sitting at just outside of the Top 40 which is better than most coronation songs.
The trick is that it needs to pick up more major markets (I see that the Zoo in NY is playing it, so that’s a good sign) and it needs to get more afternoon spins when more people are listening (right now, the overnight spins seem to dominate the other time periods).
Frankly, I just don’t see the song being a big Top 40 hit. It might break into the 30s, but I doubt it will go much higher. Don’t get me wrong, Cookie sings the crap out of it, but there is a lot of crap in that song. The lyrics are ridiculous and not in an ironic way. Magic Rainbows just seems too flowery for Pop radio. And that’s just my opinion. I’ve been wrong before and it’s not a personal attack on David C. He didn’t write or pick the song.
Meanwhile, I think it is much better suited for HAC and AC and you will see that it’s doing quite well on those charts. It’s almost in the Top 10 in the AC chart.
Sligh has got a top 20 hit on CAC which is something.
I don’t know why Phil suddenly disappeared from the Country charts. He was doing okay one week and was gone the next week. Perhaps the label has decided to focus their resources in another direction for him. I hope Phil finds success. He really grew on me near the end of his run.
Cook gained 12 spins on Hot 40 and is now at 41. I think that is great.
Thanks Kristen! I always appreciate your knowledge.
I agree, and that’s why I was surprised Z100 started playing it. It seems like an odd fit. They’ve given it 7 spins so far. Are those just test spins? I just can’t see it on their playlist amidst Fergie and Usher LOL Hot AC it blends well in. WPLJ in NY is playing it a lot now.
eta: oh it is on their playlist actually, at #46 right behind No Air.
Yeah, the problem with Magic Rainbow is that most Cook fans want it to do well because it’s Cook, and hearing anything from him on the radio is awesome, but on the other hand, there is always the question - is this the song that David should have a breakout hit with? He didn’t write it, and as much as it has grown on me, it still has ridiculous lyrics and doesn’t represent his musical style much at all.
I’m personally happy with it going gold and slowly disappearing in the near future, clearing the way for a new single this summer.
*crosses fingers, waits impatiently*
Well TOML was the No. 7 most played song in the Clubs in May. So its not only Cook fans.

Wow, by clubs is that referring to dance clubs???? I can in no way see TOML being in some DJ’s lineup at a nightclub.
ITA with you Jolene. I think most of Cookie’s fans want it to do well because its him, but the song itself, while its grown on some of us, its a sappy song. Most of these coronation songs, IMO, don’t seem to fit anything outside that moment when the confetti is raining down on the winner. Although, several weeks ago I heard one caller on air at WPLJ in NY request the song and dedicate it to her graduating class. Personally, I can’t wait to see him get a hit with one of his own songs.
