Lots of songs/artists bouncing on and off the charts. Blake, Bo, Melinda and Sanjaya are off the published airplay charts, while Clay returns. Jordin’s debut single off her album jumps onto the Pop and HAC charts while a bunch of other songs get claused off the charts (e.g. “Never Again” from Pop, “Change” from AC, “I Wonder” and “A Different World” from Country). Elliott’s new single “One Word” also makes an appearance on Pop/AC.

Thanks Kirsten. I look forward to your Monday morning stats.

What does “claused off the charts” mean? I was surprised that Bucky’s song, “A Different World” was #5 last week and missing this week.

Were there numbers for Jordin’s “I (Who have nothing)”? You have a space for it but no numbers.

Daughtry sure is on a lot of charts - Carrie and Fantasia too.

Do you know if artists or anyone else associated with the songs get paid when music is played on regular radio?

What does “claused off the charts” mean? I was surprised that Bucky’s song, “A Different World was #5 last week and missing this week.

I thought people might be surprised about it, so that’s why I mentioned it this week. In order to make room for new songs on the charts, each chart has rules as to when songs are removed from the “Current” chart and moved to “Recurrents”. For instance, songs that have been on the chart for more than two years or songs that have been on the chart for X weeks, been higher than Y position and are now lower than Z position (for instance, for the Hot 100, if a song has been on the chart for more than 20 weeks, been higher than position 100 (obviously) and dropped below 50, it goes to recurrents). That is why you see a song that still seems quite popular (and which you still hear on the radio) suddenly disapper from the charts.

Bucky’s “A Different World” received 4318 spins (and 23.345 million listeners) in the last 7 days. It’s the second most popular recurrent song. Based on the number of spins, it would probably have been ranked 16 on the Country chart (it lost 1601 spins from the previous week) if it had not been removed (recurrents aren’t given a ranking, they are just listed as “recurrent”).

Were there numbers for Jordin’s “I (Who have nothing)”? You have a space for it but no numbers.

It was on the charts last week and I forgot to remove it. I always start with last week’s list of songs to save on typing. I’ve removed it now.

Do you know if artists or anyone else associated with the songs get paid when music is played on regular radio?

I seem to recall that the songwriters get paid each time the song is played on the regular radio. Recently, there has been some press about artists also wanting royalties from radio. I believe that satellite radio does pay royalties to artists (and I did not follow it, but there has been some discussion about the royalties paid by internet radio). Perhaps somebody who actually knows the rules could post them?

Thanks for explaining what happened to A Different World. I’m surprised the country stations drop songs so quickly. Losing 1601 spins in a week is a pretty big drop. Top 40 keeps them on the charts until they drop out of the Top 20 so Wait for Me will show up for quite awhile even though it lost its bullet this week. The Top 10 on Top 40 is the same songs you’ve been hearing all summer and they move very slowly down the charts.

Thanks a million for answering my questions, Kirsten. You really brighten up Monday mornings.

It sucks that they took Bucky’s song off the listing.

Funny thing, Elliott got a spin on a country music station one day last week. It was probably a non-reporting station and it probably will never happen again. It was such a surprise when it showed up on Yes.com that I went to the station’s website to be sure that I wasn’t seeing things. LOL.

Bucky Covington’s “It’s Good To Be Us” at #74 on the charts is doing well IMO, since it hasn’t officially been released yet. I hope all the Bucky fans will get out and request this song and bring it on up the charts. It’s got that good old “Bucky growl” which was missing from ADW.

Apparently Kellie has released or is about to release her third single with “Things That Never Cross” (I think the rest of the title is “A Guy’s Mind.”). I have it on my playlist and it is an uptempo song with a good beat.

There is a lot of talk that there might be another single released from Kat’s album in the fall. For now, that new song is “Until You Come Back to Me” which is a song that she sang on Stevie Wonder night on the show, but did not officially record. The song was spin only once this week, so it was probably spun as an example of Idol or Kat songs from the show (just a guess). If it gets spun more next week, it may indicate something is up.
