    Hey mj,

Bigtime Brooke fan here. If and when you post a video performance of Brooke in the recap can you put up her ‘Yellow’ performance? I would die and go to heaven if you did.

Something I noticed at the concert last night–has Carly lost a ton of weight, or does the camera really add 15? Cuz my mom & I both commented that in person, she is a little bit of a thing!

In a recent interview on an entertainment show Carly said that she lost 15 pounds since she left AI.

Carly apparently dislocated her hip on the final group number last night, her mother, Marie, commented on MySpace:

    http://www.myspace.com/carlysmithsononlyofficialpage

Ok everyone, yes Carly put her hip out of place last night,I have just got to speak to her 5mins ago and she said she felt it at the group song at the end of the night, and tried to sign some autographs for the fans after the show and Micheal had to get security to help her get back inside she was in so much pain.
She has had treatment and is getting more today and is on pain killers so she feels she will be fine for tonight. She wants to thank you all for your concern.

Sorry bax, maybe the “beer runs” might have to come during another set if Carly can’t go. :doh_tb:

Oh, ouch! Poor Carly. This tour has got to be hard on the bodies.

  11. 11 purplesmile Jul 20th, 2008 at 2:15 pm

Aww, poor Carly. Three injuries so far on this tour. :s

    Chicago Sun Times review…

In concert, American Idols score different results

The “American Idols Live!” tour hit town this weekend like the well-oiled machine that it is. The three-hour show moved at a brisk pace — and a few of the performers made a bigger impact than they did while on the show…

  12. 12 outofsorts Jul 20th, 2008 at 2:34 pm

Yeah! Glad to see the Chicago Sun-Times reviewer saying that David A is all but assured pop stardom…I agree!

  13. 13 Natasha Jul 20th, 2008 at 3:08 pm

Poor Carly!! Hope she’s feeling better and is ready to rock on.

  14. 14 baxter Jul 20th, 2008 at 3:10 pm

Let me begin by saying that I would never wish an injury on anyone…..ok maybe Tom Brady around Nov 1st…but that’s just different…(Sarah will sooooo agree with me on this!!!)….so I am sorry to hear that Carly has hurt herself, but damn there goes my beer run break!!! :) My ears and eyes are grateful, but I do hope for a speedy recovery for her…granted if she has to miss any shows could she rejoin the tour on Weds rather than Tuesday this week??? Pretty Please!!!!

  15. 15 FolkFan Jul 20th, 2008 at 3:33 pm

I found the Sun-Times’ review to be a bit strange on DC. It seems to have praised four of the songs (only not liking ToML), but called the set only “decent.”

Ah, well. It seems like midwest audiences like Cookie. Midwest newspapers, maybe not so much.

  16. 16 CRB Jul 20th, 2008 at 3:37 pm

This may have just gone from bad to worse, there is nothing “official” on this yet on Carly’s MySpace or at americanidol.com but somebody who is close to the family just said at one of “the other” boards:

im so sorry to break the news.. but i was just talking to marie..

and carly has to have surgery.. no.gif

So Carly could well be done for the tour, at least for a good long stretch, if she is indeed going in for hip surgery. :sad_tb:

  17. 17 Jolene Jul 20th, 2008 at 3:38 pm

Wow, the tour is really taking its toll on them, isn’t it? I hope nobody’s in a full body cast by the time this is over!

  18. 18 ianamy Jul 20th, 2008 at 3:39 pm

Oh no, I so look forward to hearing Carly alive! Get well soon, Carly!

So very happy that the critics have given Archie best reviews.

  19. 19 spritely Jul 20th, 2008 at 3:45 pm

She must be in so much pain. I’m sending trainloads of sympathy.

  20. 20 lala Jul 20th, 2008 at 3:48 pm

Man, does that suck for Carly. I hope she doesn’t need surgery, and I am so glad I got to see her last night. I thought she was awesome–I never felt she represented herself/or was represented by the show in the best way, and I was really happy to see how good she was live.

Although I understand the thoughts of those that don’t like her–I saw the season 5 show, and when they came to Chicago, Kat was sick or injured and wasn’t there–made the show soooooo much better for me. :)

  21. 21 FolkFan Jul 20th, 2008 at 3:51 pm

Anyone who was there last night, was there some kind of strange extra choreography during PDSTM last night? (Other than MJ’s robot, etc.) Because I don’t remember Carly doing anything in the videos that I’d seen that seemed at all like something that could cause a major hip injury….

It’s sad—in STL, she was spotting DC so that he wouldn’t get hurt during that song, and now maybe she got hurt, instead….

  22. 22 gingerly Jul 20th, 2008 at 3:53 pm

I so agree with you lala. I found her to be amazing last night. She was beautiful and her outfit, minus the weird glovy thingies, was beautiful. I’ll be praying for her quick recovery from whatever it is.

  23. 23 Jolene Jul 20th, 2008 at 4:18 pm

Anyone who was there last night, was there some kind of strange extra choreography during PDSTM last night?

I have to admit that I don’t get it either. Do they do anything beyond walking for that song? Strange.

It’s sad—in STL, she was spotting DC so that he wouldn’t get hurt during that song, and now maybe she got hurt, instead…

Just saw that on video. That was a really sweet moment. I love that the Idols are all so loving and caring towards each other. Hopefully Carly is fine to perform tonight.

  24. 24 Sarah Jul 20th, 2008 at 4:24 pm

I’m wondering if it was a “leaving the stage” type injury, where she fell or something. Because I don’t remember anything out of the ordinary happening on stage during that song.

I hope Carly is okay, though. It would really suck if she had to miss stops of the tour.

  25. 25 CRB Jul 20th, 2008 at 4:28 pm

I hope so Jolene, Carly’s mom isn’t on the MySpace and nothing official, as of yet, has come out. I’m staying hopeful that she is good to keep singing. Supposedly, you cannot really operate on a dislocated hip so I’m not sure what is up at this point. We will know tonight, there is a show right?

  26. 26 skylight1219 Jul 20th, 2008 at 5:38 pm

Wow, so sad for Carly. Bo got injured during the season 4 tour, and, then Kat was sick during season 5. Here’s hoping for a speedy recovery.

  27. 27 CRB Jul 20th, 2008 at 5:43 pm

Final word on the subject pre-concert tonight, from Carly’s mother (and posted on her official MySpace):

    Hi Guys,
Just to put these rumors to bed.
Carly is not going to have any surgery she did put her hip out last night but is getting plenty of care and is on pain killers for her performance.
So please dont listen to whoever it is saying they are family on some chat site.
Can i take this opportunity to thank all her loyal fans for the good wishes.
    Much love
    Marie xx

Hopefully, Carly is off those heels tonight. Those things are a recipe for pain, imo. And sorry for being part of spreading any bad info.

  28. 28 pj Jul 20th, 2008 at 5:51 pm

I hope Carly is doing okay!

I almost wasn’t going to do a recap after reading the excellent ones that preceded this. I was too tired last night and fell asleep while Sarah finished hers, but she encouraged me, so what the hell.

First off, it’s always a pleasure hanging out with MJ and Sarah, which I’ve been fortunate to do on a number of occasions. This weekend I also got to spend some time with Chachi, who is as awesome as I imagined she would be. Sarah and I had seats 1 and 2 in the center aisle of section 2, row 31. Chach had seat 4. Luckily, the seat between us was empty. We happily redirected a woman who was looking for her seat after she told us seat 10. So, thanks Ticketmaster or Mr. or Ms (prolly Ms) no show! We briefly met the fabulous Krazeek and her friend from out of town, Sparkles! They drove quite a distance to see the show, so I hope they enjoyed it.

    The Buses

Yeah, we decided to stalk the buses. By the time we arrived, though, the place was already packed with fantards like us. At that point I realized I wasn’t going to even attempt an autograph or a brief conversation with any of the Idols. I’m just not that pushy, and there were so many people. Better to hang back and observe.

The girls were the first to greet the fans. Ramile, Kristy Lee, Brooke, Carly and Syesha all made an appearance. I think all but Syesha made it to the end of the line. I was hanging back towards the end, so I didn’t get a good look at Sy. The other four made it through the line. Rami is tiny, of course, and Carly and Brooke are both natural beauties. As mentioned before, Carly is much smaller in person. I overheard Brooke encouraging fans to donate to charity (maybe IGB) instead of giving them presents. Then one woman told her that she donated $50 in Cookie’s name. Brooke smiled and she was sure David would appreciate it. I thought, “Was that necessary?” Couldn’t she just appreciate the fact that she was talking to Brooke without bringing Cookie into it?

Jason came out next, and started at the beginning of the fan line, and shortly thereafter Johnsy appeared and started at the end. I watched him banter with fans. I really didn’t hear much of what he said, other than that he hopes the album will be out in Jan or Feb. He seemed to have a great rapport and quite the engaging personality. He was all smiles and HAWTness personified. Even better looking than on teevee. Too bad he wasn’t able to show his personality on Idol, because I don’t think it translated.

I thought Jason seemed really good natured, too, if not as outgoing. I heard him greet some fans with “howdy folks!” LOL. He looked the same as he did on TV, but maybe a little skinnier, if that’s possible. Totally pretty with lovely skin. It took Johnsy and Jason much longer to make it through the line of fans than it did the girls. Jason had a big blue bag to hold all his gifts. I still scratch my head at the gift giving, but that’s just me.

    The Concert (Part One):

Chikeze: Chicago showed Chikeze some love. Well, Chicago showed all the Idols some love. At least from the back, everyone stood for at least each Idol’s first song. I understand that might not have been the case in the front, but from where I sat, yep. Chik did a good job firing up the crowd with “I Believe To My Soul” and none of his songs disappointed. He worked the stage well, too. My only complaint… I wanted to see him reprise “She’s a Woman.”

Ramile: She’s tiny, and I’m short. I found it hard to see her (and others), so I spent a lot of time watching the jumbo tron (or whatever it’s called). I don’t know if it was a case of reduced expectations, but I enjoyed her set. She sounded pretty good. I can’t really address her presence on the BIG STAGE, but she had some good moves at the top of the stairs. LOL. That’s about all I could see other than what was on the big screen. I do think that she’s improving. This tour may be a great experience for her!

Johnsy: Poor dude. He got the only boos of the night. Don’t worry Johnsy fans. It was after he said he hoped the Cubs would win the World Series. Those were prolly jellus h8ing Sox fans. And while I usually hate sports pandering at concerts, I know MJ has a close friend who is a Cub, has sung the national anthem at Wrigley, and it’s been 100 freaking years. So, let’s hope he didn’t jinx them and become the next billy goat or Bartman, mmmkay? As for his set, he was good and the crowd loves those arena songs, so they loved him too. My favorite was the bluesy version of Dolly’s IAWBIAR, and if he had played that card on the show like the judges suggested, he would’ve lasted longer. Oh, well. Side note: I still think Ace’s falsetto on Dream On is better. ;-)

KLC: I’ve never been a fan of hers, so I’ll get that out of the way right now. However, I also wasn’t inspired to turn to Chachi or Sarah and say, “She sounds pretty good” like I did with Rami. She had really bad enunciation in the first song… couldn’t understand her. I left for a potty break during “God Bless The USA” because I hate that drek. I was back for the third number. Good luck to her, I guess. Her voice isn’t bad. She’s going for that Shania Twain stage presence thing, if you get my drift.

Carly: I haven’t really commented on the outfits, but I really think Carly’s is OTT bad. I mean, she looked so cute in black jeans at the buses, and then puts on that atrocity. I can understand wanting to glam it up, but she needs some fashion help. Stat. I liked her on the Evanescence song, not so much on Heart (I thought it was screechy), but better again on “Drive All Night.” I’m still not sure what kind of record she’d make. I wish her luck. She seems like a really nice woman.

Brooke: I was most looking forward to her set in the first half, and she didn’t disappoint. I loved “Let it be” and “Yellow.” She said she wished she had written “Yellow” and that love of the song came across in her performance. Fantastic. I thought her version of “1234” lacked some of the quirkiness of the original. It seemed a little cutesy (snapping is the new clapping!) but somehow it was goofy and engaging and totally worked for her. Loved her set.

  29. 29 georgestraight Jul 20th, 2008 at 6:57 pm

I really hope Carly is alright. She’s in my prayers.

  30. 30 pj Jul 20th, 2008 at 7:17 pm

    Part 2

Jasonnn: He was my absolute fave on the show. I adore him. I illegally moved to the aisle and was able to watch most of his set without resorting to the big screen. He exudes a natural charisma when he performs. I think Sarah said joy. She’s totally on point with that. I can’t even say which song I loved the most b/c his set is solid and really reflects his style. Maybe “Crazy,” because he didn’t do it on the show. I would rather see him in a smaller venue, though. Not because he can’t handle the arena (he can and did), but I was put off by the constant screaming during his set. I appreciate that he has fans. I do. I’m one. But how can you enjoy “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” if you’re screaming? Listen peeps, and let me listen, okay? Oh, and to the dude up ten rows on the right? Rawk hands? Really? This is Somewhere Over the Freaking Rainbow. Maybe Jasoonn has arrived if he had dudes doing rawk hands during SOTR. I’m just not sure.

Syesha: Well, I was most interested in hearing her sing Rhianna. I thought that if TPTB would have given her that song instead of the one from that animated film, perhaps she would have had a chance against the Davids. Prolly not, but give the girl something to fight with, TPTB. So, I was a bit disappointed that her mic didn’t work during the first minute or so of the song. At least she handled it like a pro and the crowd was on her side. I’ll say that I have never connected with her. I used her set as my second potty break after the mic flub. I wanted to be back for the Davids. She apparently killed on the Beyonce song and the crowd loved it. Not my thing, so I was happy with my choice to go to the girls.

David A: Okay. Here goes. This kid is on stage because he loves it. Seriously. Even if his Dad is a bit of a stage papa, I get that Archie loves to perform. “Stand By Me” was my absolute favorite of his. I actually enjoyed “Apologize” even though I love One Republic’s version more. That said, I did turn to Sarah during the Josh Grobin song (don’t even expect me to name it!) and mention that nasally is a form of singing (tm roundhead) was making a comeback. Trust me, Archie’s version of that drek-infested song would top that chart. I cracked up at his Jesus arms during that one. But hey, the crowd loved him. The high pitched screeching was deafening. And yeah, that jacket must go!

David C: The crowd went nuts for him, of course. I’m gonna get that out of the way right now. I don’t like his coronation song or the Diane Warren song either, so yeah. But he kicked all kinda ass on “Hello” and “Hero.” Gah, if he could get Dave Grohl or maybe the dudes from Queens of the Stoneage to write for him… it could be pure rock gold. Prolly won’t happen, but a girl can dream. Billie Jean was intense and captivating… the perfect encore. While I know he has to do the coronation song, why that Aerosmith one? Oh, well, it is what it is. I imagine he’s going to sell a lot of records for 19 and I’ll be buying what he’s selling.

Great recap pj. I’m glad you all had such a great time. I especially liked this part:

That made me laugh pretty damn loud!

Carly tripped and almost tumbled down the stairs at the San Jose show during the group number. Maybe those high heel boots aren’t the greatest thing to be dancing around in????

    Awesome recap, pj. Thanks. :)

    *seethes with envy* lol

Thanks for the pics, barefootgirl. :)

Gah, if he could get Dave Grohl or maybe the dudes from Queens of the Stoneage to write for him… it could be pure rock gold.

Argh, please don’t give me even a slight glimmer of hope like that to hang on to! Because I know it ain’t gonna happen! lol.

Anyway, it was much fun hanging with all of y’all this weekend. :) Despite *almost* missing my connection in Atlanta - due to my flight out of Chicago leaving 25 minutes later than it was supposed to, and already having only 45 minutes (pre-delay) to get to the gate for my connecting flight (which was thankfully right across from the one where the arriving flight came in) - I’m now home. So, yay for going back to work tomorrow. /sarcasm

Anyway, next up - Tampa with Spense, Spense-friend, and Sarah-friend! WOO HOO!!

Someone should encourage Carly to see a chiropractor.
Perhaps she could be fixed right up real quick.
She doesn’t have to live in pain or get surgery.
Certainly, she needs to wear shorter heels!

  40. 40 Linny Jul 21st, 2008 at 10:00 pm

Cara, I was thinking of you today. And then I read this. Must be those strong positive vibes. Glad you had a good time. I was going to try to catch the Idols in NY, but I lost my energy for the tour… I guess I’m just too old, LOL. well, I HAVE been busy with another Idol anyway…
