More On David Cook’s Upcoming Album - Songs by Johnny Rzeznik, and Raine Maida Make the Cut

Bonus: New David Cook Vlog right here…he announces his upcoming SNL appearance, but we knew that already…

We’ve got the cover photo and track list of David Cook’s upcoming, self-titled album, the lineup of Cook’s band, deets on the “Light On” video shooting today and tomorrow in Los Angeles, and news that David will appear on Saturday Night Live on Nov. 1.

Now Shirley Halperin of Entertainment Weekly adds a few more details to the mix:

Mastering on his self-titled album was completed in New York earlier this week, with Cook personally overseeing the finishing touches on 12 tracks, 11 of which he wrote or cowrote. Other songwriters who made the cut: Goo Goo Dolls’ Johnny Rzeznik, Our Lady Peace singer Raine Maida (who’s credited on four songs), Cathy Dennis (of Britney Spears “Toxic” fame), and, of course, Chris Cornell, who wrote the single “Light On.”

As of Oct. 21, fans who pre-order the full album on iTunes can download the single instantly and will also get an as-yet-undetermined exclusive bonus track.

Apparently, his first single, “Light On” is the only track Cook didn’t write or co-write. I wonder how representative the single is of the overall sound of the album? I’m beginning to think not much. I wonder what sort of song, Cathy Dennis, the dance-oriented pop singer songwriter wrote with David?

Dennis, also on the 19M roster has written for many 19M clients, including several Idols.  She co-wrote Katy Perry’s smash hit “I Kissed a Girl” as well as Britney Spear’s “Toxic”. Dennis co-wrote a song with Andy Partridge of XTC and recorded a cover of Ray Davies “Waterloo Sunset”, so I’m a little less skeered.

ETA:  Check out this scan of the new Rolling Stone interview with David Cook.  The reporter, Gavin Edwards, sits in on a mix of a tune, “Breathe Right” that didn’t make the final cut.  Edwards previewed 8 tracks–

“…listeners can expect radio-ready anthems like the U2-esque “Come Back to Me,” some aggro-rockers like “Bar-Bi-Sol” and plenty of the soaring voice that the AI judges loved.”  Edwards notes that Cook’s Tulsa bandmate, Neil Tiemann from the Midwest Kings, played on the album.”

Appearances lined up for David Cook in the coming weeks are: The Ellen Degeneres Show, The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, Live With Regis and Kelly, and Good Morning America.

November is shaping up to be a veritable Cookathon! I couldn’t be happier for DC.

Hey, mj–FoolsApril64 at DCO posted a scan of a Rolling Stone article: http://www.davidcookofficial.com/content/rolling-stone-article-scan

    This all sounds very exciting.

Also, MTV’s take on the song titles: http://newsroom.mtv.com/2008/10/15/decoding-american-idol-winner-david-cooks-song-titles/

I wondered about this, too. Then, it got me thinkin’ (uh oh) about that Rolling Stones article when he was making that “lighter” song sound “dirtier”. So…I wondered how creative was he with the co-writes? If she gave him something maybe a little…poppy…did he grunge it up like the infamous ABMB? Sigh. Five more weeks….

Dang it! I’m too excited. Shouldn’t I be looking forward to Thanksgiving, or something….?

Oh my, he wants us to be exhausted after we’re done listening to the album! :smoke_tb:

All of this news in such a short period of time is almost too much! I can’t wait! :D

I wonder what sort of song, Cathy Dennis, the dance-oriented pop singer songwriter wrote with David?

Co writer of “I Kissed a Girl” and wrote for Britney?

If it’s “I Kissed a Boy” there will be a million rainbow-colored cries of happiness in the land.

Or maybe “Oops I Did It Again The Rematch”

This video, only with Dave in the orange latex suit?

Aaah…the Rolling Stone article is delicious.

I totally remember the poptastic Cathy Dennis from the 90s and can’t possibly imagine her writing a song for David Cook.

ETA: Now I have a Cathy Dennis song in my head that I haven’t thought about in at least 10 years…something about touching her all night long.

  8. 8 Deejay Oct 15th, 2008 at 4:42 pm

I don’t know…I think I’d like to see the male interpretation of “I’m a Slave 4 U,” complete with a large snake around his neck. And maybe some molten hot lava in the background.

  9. 9 sma11ie Oct 15th, 2008 at 4:43 pm

Aw, Toxic was an awesome song! Way better than Womanizer, which is such a Toxic wannabe IMO (ditto the video!).

Thanks for the MTV link. The guy was being snarky (WTF, “swirly little head”?) but fair, so no complaints from me. The fact that his PR is getting covered in different places is a good sign. The article was neat too cuz of all the links to the older articles– I actually clicked on their interview with DC back in May, and I love that he had this perspective mere days after winning:

I’m just trying to put out a solid record. Even if it doesn’t do well commercially, at least I can say I put out a record that I’m proud of. That’s the goal right now. Hopefully, if I can do that, the success would follow.

While I’m not worried for him in terms of commercial success, I also love that no matter what, he’s just finished a record he’s proud of, so yay for him! And I already know I will love it, so yay for me, too, haha!

ETA: Seems like a song by Neal, and cowrites with Ed Roland, Kara Dioguardi, Dan Wilson didn’t make the cut. Any others I missed?

All this news has sent me over the edge. I was debating back and forth about attending the Do The Wright Thing gala on 11/12, then last week I decided that between me and my daughter $150 per ticket was a lot to spend as we near the holiday season but apparently I’ve lost my mind and bought tickets a little while ago. Sanity is so overrated.

  11. 11 Michelle Oct 15th, 2008 at 5:17 pm

LOL I like Toxic too…definitely not your formula pop song there :) I think it’s safe to say we won’t be getting any Stargate-formula ditties on DC’s record. “I Kissed A Girl” I hate on principle but I’ll admit grudgingly that the damn thing pops up in my head for no reason, and frequently.

Can anyone give an example of an “aggro rock” song? Cause I’m thinking one thing, but then someone gave a definition mentioning funk influences and suddenly I’m thinking Gnarls Barkley or Outkast…

  12. 12 Layla Oct 15th, 2008 at 5:43 pm

Oh Goody Goody..more DC news! I guess the MTV think was supposed to be snarky…fell flat to me, but nevermind…it’s PR!

    Goo Cookie…you just go boy!

  13. 13 sunchick Oct 15th, 2008 at 5:57 pm

You guys have given me the courage to out my secret Toxic love. That song has always been a favorite guilty pleasure. This album sounds more interesting all the time… Twists and turns indeed.

Michelle, as far as I know, aggro=aggresive just like emo=emotive. An example off the top of my head…Rage Against the Machine, Staind, Linkin Park….

  14. 14 leome Oct 15th, 2008 at 6:02 pm

4 songs with RM, one with JR, one with CM… the other 5 songs are written just by him.
We know he wrote with Ed Roland, Zac Maloy, Jason Wade, Daniel Dodd Wilson, The new american Idol judge… maybe more people… but still, those songs didn’t make the cut. Makes me think he’s own material is so much better that the label let them put away the songs co-written with those big (some of them) names.
But still, if those songs exist, I hope we can listen to them in some way.

Oh, and could that Breathe song be the bonnus track you get if you pre-order from Itunes?

  15. 15 Autumn Oct 15th, 2008 at 6:05 pm

Arrrrr DC overload!!! :jittery_tb: Thanks for the RS and MTV links Deejay!!

Haha, Michelle, are you me? I can’t stand I Kissed a Girl but ALWAYS find myself bopping to it when it comes up on the radio–until I realize which song it is, at which point I change the station, embarrassed at my own bad taste. Back to DC– I’m with whoever brought up DC’s magic touch with turning pop ditties into total kick-ass awesomeness. If so many songs cowritten with such heavy hitters got ditched in favor of something with this Cathy Dennis, I bet it’s for good reason.

Hooray for Trina! Going to Hard Rock NYC benefit show! I’m jealous. Yeah…and now, *thud* on floor from ALMOST Cook Overload this week.

Of course, there are no documented cases of Cook Overload as of yet. Cause it don’t actually exist, ya know. Never too much Cook!

If I had that #(&*$# gas well lease money in my hands, I would SO be traveling to NYC for Nov 12! ARGH. Sanity? PSHAW! Who needs it? We have David Cook! Jump off a building? OK. Exhaust myself listening to you sing? OK. Anything else?

GUUUUUUUUUUH I am SO excited! Excited excited excited. I was hoping hoping hoping that all the other songs would be written or co-written by David. And A Daily AntheM is HIS. OMG. He has to be absolutely THRILLED, beyond words, right now! If it’s a record he is proud of, I think I’m gonna like it. Love it even, possibly. I think this guy is so talented and smart. And funny and clever and witty. I am SO grateful that “we” finally “discovered” him, whatever that took. I am just a sucker for intelligent songwriting, good music, real singing, musicality, and a silly clever novelty-type song is good now and then even. And I’ve been totally sucked in…is it Nov 1 yet? Nov 18? Has the tour started? Comeoncomeoncomeon.

The reporter rattles off a list of songwriters who made the cut, but it may not be the definitive list of songwriters whose songs made the album–we don’t know for sure that Cook wrote 5 songs on his own.

  19. 19 Michelle Oct 15th, 2008 at 6:10 pm

LOL I guess we just happen to share the same appallingly bad taste in pop music, sma11ie ;) Cure us, DC!!!

well imo, Britney and *NSync put out some quality pop in their day. It was good for the time. Now that I’ve completely invalidated my opinion…I can be down with some Rage Against the Machine/Linkin Park-ish stuff :) Actually, couldn’t a lot of Axium be classified as that?

“Aggro” made me think like, death metal.

  20. 20 Pam Oct 15th, 2008 at 6:40 pm

    New vlog from DC HERE.

  21. 21 Autumn Oct 15th, 2008 at 6:44 pm

Where is that from Pam? It isn’t a link for me it is a download for an Unknown file :( Don’t know if I should do it….

  22. 22 Pam Oct 15th, 2008 at 6:46 pm

Sorry about that Autumn. That was the direct link to the vid. It’s posted on DCO HERE. You’ll find it just below the i-tunes graphic for LO. :)

  23. 23 noctem seizure Oct 15th, 2008 at 7:14 pm

First, anybody dising Cathy Dennis will have to answer to me. I think I hit puberty by listening to “Touch Me” (”Touch me. Touch me. I wanna feel your body…”). No, actually I can’t give the credit for that to her. It probably has to go to Samantha Fox (sigh)….

Second, I hope “Breathe Right” is the Itunes preorder bonus track. Epic and Foo-like? Sounds great. I’ll be disappointed if it’s never made available in some form.

  24. 24 Keel Oct 15th, 2008 at 7:54 pm

“Aggro” made me think like, death metal.

I was thinking more industrial metal (KMFDM style), but I’m down with some Rage Against the Machine and Linkin Park too — but hopefully, no rapping by DC. Though I suppose if he really wanted to give us an ultimate true twist-and-turn WTF moment on the album, that would certainly do the trick.

  25. 25 sunchick Oct 15th, 2008 at 7:59 pm

Toxic, Touch Me…I see a theme here with the Cathy Dennis tunes. And I like it. :smoke_tb:

  26. 26 Sarah Oct 15th, 2008 at 8:09 pm

So. Much. Information, I’m still trying to process it all!! All I know right now is that I’m getting freaking excited for November!! :D

  27. 27 Autumn Oct 15th, 2008 at 8:17 pm

Thanks Pam! Here is a little sound bite from Sirius Radio I heard today (I hope it hasn’t already been posted…)

Thanks, Autumn, that was funny. He’s so capable of doing a comedy skit on SNL. I’m not hoping for one, however, so if we get that too, I’ll be even happier.

  29. 29 hypertwink Oct 15th, 2008 at 8:34 pm

“It works for me if it works for you.”

    Funny Cookie.

  30. 30 Pam Oct 15th, 2008 at 9:15 pm

Your welcome Autumn. Love the Sirius promo. Heh

  31. 31 Trina Oct 15th, 2008 at 9:19 pm

That vlog has me grinning like an idiot. How happy did he look talking about SNL?? His whole face lit up. Makes me happy.

Just Jared has up pictures of him arriving at LAX

  32. 32 Layla Oct 15th, 2008 at 9:25 pm

New Vlog…these past couple of days just keep getting better and better! He looks so happy….and the record has gone to press!

Just Jared has up pictures of him arriving at LAX

    Okay…still wondering about that skateboard.

  34. 34 grrrr Oct 15th, 2008 at 9:45 pm

Aw, Toxic was an awesome song!

Agreeance. If you can look past the Britney aspect, I think the mark of a good song is that you can change it up completely and it’ll still be awesome.

I wanna hear “Breathe Right.” I hope it pops up somewhere.

  35. 35 CathyMK Oct 15th, 2008 at 10:01 pm

So, according to David (in the vlog), SNL will be the first live performance for the band. Wow- no testing things out in small clubs for them, straight to the big time it is!

  36. 36 emwcee Oct 16th, 2008 at 6:02 pm

I’m still confused about the bonus track only available for people who pre-order on I-Tunes. Where does that leave those of us who pre-ordered the CD from Amazon? Do we need to pre-order from I-Tunes to get the bonus song?

  37. 37 mj Oct 16th, 2008 at 6:06 pm

Do we need to pre-order from I-Tunes to get the bonus song?

Yep. If there are only two versions of the album, that’s pretty good. Some Idol albums not only have special iTunes versions with bonus tracks, but sometimes Target and/or Wal-mart versions as well. All with different bonus tracks. If you want everything, you have to buy each special version. And of course, most fans want everything.

  38. 38 Layla Oct 17th, 2008 at 6:17 pm

Okay MJ, guess this answers the question I put up on the newest headlines thread.

So, if I legally want all the bonus tracks I have to buy all of the cds with the different bonus tracks…Hmmm….

And I am STILL pissed I cannot buy from the American Itunes.
