Today did a piece this morning on Michael Johns elimination. Mandisa has a little cameo. The report states that Michael was considered a front runner from the beginning, which isn’t exactly true, but it is a good retrospective of Michael’s run and what possibly went wrong. They compare his ouster to Chris Daughtry’s sudden ejection at 4th place in Season 5. In the end, they give Michael’s elimination a positive spin–that like Chris, not winning Idol might work in his favor. Hey, Bucky Covington isn’t complaining!
I just posted my thoughts in last night’s recap.
And, check out Kirsten’s stats regarding performance order from today’s headlines thread comments section. 80% of this season’s bootees performed in the first half. A whopping 40% started first. Very interesting stuff.

Wow…
About those stats. Yeah, very interesting.. I
If you go first on Top 8 your chances to get eliminated are so much higher. I remember Nadia in season 4.
But I am so proud of him.. I am happy that it seems the media is behind him too.
He is so talented… I am still in awe of Kristy Lee, Syesha and Carly still there. WTF did America do?
He had been great the last three weeks in row.
He just got robbed by singing first and all the red lights. I hate the red lights. They sure can kill a contestant.
Go Michael! You rock on! You won’t have to dream anymore, I am sure you will have a great singing career.
He is such a class act too. Sigh…
AI lost a great great contestant. It will be very boring and predictable from now on.
Thanks for the video, MJ. I’m glad to see they’re treating this as the shocker it was. Maybe that will help him. I’m still a little bitter and don’t feel the same about this season now. I’m not surprised at the stats. It makes you wonder if they wanted this.
He’s on AI Extra. I only saw the start so far but he was consoling Carly and telling her it’s all good.
I didn’t like the fakeout where thought “maybe” as last year, they didnt elim. anyone…like maybe he wasnt. bad
Bean ,at what time they show AI Extra? I don’t get Fox Reality.
I hope someone catches the video and posts it later.
I am also bitter about what happened and not feeling very enthusiastic about the rest of the season. It’s going to be so predictable. Zzzz. MJ brought life to the show.
I do think AI wanted MJ out so that his votes could help either Carly or David C. So wrong.. Anyways as I said, I am sure MJ will get a record deal. I am gad the media is treating this as a huge shocker, because it really was.
That will certainly help him later.
He is so talented… I am still in awe of Kristy Lee, Syesha and Carly still there. WTF did America do?
I for one am still glad that Carly is there. I think that she has the best voice this season and if I had a choice to keep Michael Johns or her I would pick in a nanosecond.
Let’s be fair. All of the Idols this season have great voices, including KLC. It’s anybody’s to lose. And I don’t believe that stuff about going first. Larry King asked Randy about that “pimp” spot question and Randy said they drew straws. Do you honestly think somebody taps them on the shoulder and says you’re first, because we want you to lose? or you’re last because we want you to win?
What positions have David A and David C been in this year? Have either of them gone first? have they gone last more than once. The more eliminated, the closer they get to picking the 1st and last spots and the potential of being eliminated.
Syesha was first and she’s still there.
Chicago-Sally MJ posted a link to Kirsten’s chart about singing order. The Davids and Jason have never been first. Michael Johns and David A have been last twice, Michael was first twice. You do have a point that Syesha was first and survived, but that was weeks ago. Since that time she has neither been worse and the best, and that truthfully is why she is there. Maybe she not Ramiele will be the Jasmine Trias of the season.
I don’t think it’s right to compare Daughtry and Johns. It would be much more equal to compare Daughtry with David Cook. Now THAT would be a shocker… and that’s how it was when Daughtry got sent home. It’s not like MJ was a front-runner. It’s just shocking because he’s never been in the bottom 3.
Well, better to be a shock boot and get some positive press than be the who-the-heck-is-voting-for-him/he-can’t-leave-my-tv-soon-enough/he’s-responsible-for-my-fav-getting-the-boot/well-past-his-prime person (aka the “Happy Dance Boot” or the “FINALLY! Boot”.
Good luck, MJ! Use the power of the shock boot to it’s full potential.
I guess I don’t get the whole “shock” from this elimination. Surprising, ( notice that is the word Nigel used), yes, shocking no. MJ is a good singer but I never felt he was a potential winner, even when he was being pimiped as such. I am surprised that he was booted before several others, but quite honestly I thought he had the potential to go around 4th or 5th. He always stuck me as a nice, genuinely decent guy, but kinda boring to me. I have a feeling that away from the cameras he is a hoot to be around, unfortunately, he never came across that way during his face time on tv.
Good Luck to ya, MJ.
That’s kind of what I meant though. If you go before your time, you at least get a lot of positive press (he should not have been given the boot before so-and-so) and the press is all outraged about your boot. Making it shocking. I think Michael was a very long shot to win this thing (i.e. he wasn’t going to win), but by going out a bit early, he’s getting lots of positive mentions. It makes hime seem even better than he is.
I suspect that when Syesha and Kristy get the boot, the water cooler discussion won’t be “I can’t believe she got booted last night”, but more along the lines of “It’s about time.”
Yes, if David A had been booted last night, that would have been a SHOCK!!!!!11!ELEVENTY-ONE boot about 9.9 on the Boot Richter scale, but I don’t think we’ve ever had a boot of that magnitude this early in the competition. Alaina leaving before Kristy/Kady was a minor tremor, barely felt except for by the US Idol Service. David H leaving before Kristy caused a few dishes to shake. Michale J leaving before Kristy caused some poorly constructed buildings and theories to collapse. David C/A leaving before Kristy would cause vast devastation across the Idol landscape.
At the rate Kristy the Cockroach is going, I suggest that Idol viewers stock up on water, food provisions and batteries.
I guess the reason this is ’shocking’ is because he had a great performance last week and was riding the wave of a strong two weeks going into this week? I can’t think of any other reason, because I too have not considered him a frontrunner for a while now.
I thought in the beginning (like coming from auditions and Hollywood week) that Michael could win. In fact, he was my first pick in the pool for the person to win it all. I changed to David Cook literally about 30 minutes before the final picks were due.
I think Michael gave a looooong string of mediocre and unmemorable performances before he started his comeback (with the exception of “Across the Universe” which was good, but as MJ said, underappreciated). In this case, it was too little too late, as his main competition had been consistently delivering solid or showstopping performances already.
So, I think when he started sliding into that funk, people who might have been fans of his and/or were voting for him in the semis turned to other people. I know I did… in the semi’s I voted for Michael, David C, Jason, and occasionally some of the fodder (Danny and Luke mostly). But when top 12 started, all my votes went to David C and have stayed that way with the exception of one or two weeks where I threw some votes to Jason because I was worried for him. :)
That said, I own all of Michael’s iTunes studio tracks from the show and will definitely check out his post-AI music because I do think he has a good recording voice.
I have to agree. I saw glimpses of MJ behind the scenes, and, he seemed to have a great, fun, personality. We didn’t see that on stage, and, he stated that when he was in front of the cameras, he was all serious.
One thing KLC has going for her, is that she knows her audience and plays to it. Carly plays to getting Simon’s approval, therefore, alienating the audience. I wouldn’t be surprised if she goes before Kristy. As Simon stated, KLC is very smart. She knows her audience, and, sings for them. I think MJ tried to do that, but, some felt he didn’t know who he was as an artist. Maybe he should’ve stayed more with the soul/bluesy stuff.
But, in reality, I believe he was splitting the votes with David C. Most were concerned with David’s subpar performance on Tuesday night, and, rallied to save him that MJ was forgotten.
I’m not sure I think David C. should win, just because he is a rocker. Winning a contest of this sort, hurts his street cred. Something Daughtry learned.
I guess my point is, they are and have groomed little David A. to win this thing, and, nothing is going to derail TCO. Kind of takes away from the fun of it. But, we saw this over many seasons. The pimping, and, depimping to push their fave to the top of the heap.
This isn’t reality, folks, it’s an entertainment show, and, one which we all get thoroughly invested in.
Which is why AI5 was such fun. We knew who TCO was but we pushed our CO’s through. LOVE upsetting the apple cart. AI would be soooo boring for me if my CO was the same as TPTB.
