More Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul: Today Show

Paula recorded “Straight Up” 20 years ago. Whoa. The new season: Randy thinks their is more originality than in past seasons. Both Randy and Paula pimp Carly Smithson, hard. When pressed for potential winners, Randy and Paula mention David Archuleta, Brooke White, Michael Johns and Carly Smithson as favorites.

thanks, Lawrence, for the video!

Still not seeing the video. Now if they’re pimping Carly HARD, then there’s more to this than we know. Remember — Randy was her A&R man back in the day.

Randy and Paul seem to grow more useless every day (except Paula IS entertaining!). Simon’s the voice of reason. I would’ve loved to have heard who HE would’ve pimped/called frontrunners.

So…! THAT’S what Simon said to Paula after David Hernandez sang last week!

Tell him to strip for you.

And people wonder why Paula seems distracted sometimes. I think Simon distracts her more than we realize. What a brat he is!

Have they not been watching the semis? No Jason/David C love…oh well, that’s okay :).

    Reality Rocks

Interesting interview with Randy. He’s naming those 4 as his favorites with Carly as his favorite girl.

  6. 6 Sarah Mar 10th, 2008 at 8:19 pm

Well well. Aren’t they going to be surprised. Apparently, they’ve been watching their own version of the semi’s.

Hmm, someone needs to tell them the person Randy recorded with last year was Sam Moore, Sam Cooke has been dead quite a long time and although idol brings back folks from the dead, Sam Cooke wasn’t one of them.

For once and for all was Randy HER A&R man, or just an A&R man at the same time she recorded her cd? I mean there is a big difference imvho. If that were the case I mean that would be the story indeed.

Michael Johns certainly doesn’t seem to deserve to be on that list, based on his performances so far. I don’t care if he’s Hot Aussie, he needs to step it up. I’m guessing David Cook is the fodder rocker? Heh. I don’t think the public agrees, based on iTunes. From the performances thus far, I would say David A, Jason, and David C are the top guys.

Nigel seems to like Jason. Or at least he’s mentioned in a couple of interviews how brilliant his version of “Crazy” was. I would like to see both his version and David A’s to compare. Damn you, Danger Mouse!

I think Paula is crazy with suggesting you could take any of this top twelve and put them up against previous years top three. You put Chikieze, David H., Amanda, Kristy Lee Cook (and maybe Ramielle and Michael Johns, although they might have more potential they haven’t show yet) against Jordin/Blake/Melinda, or Taylor/Kat/Elliott, or Carrie/Bo/Vonzelle and they would be slaughtered.

I don’t think they are necessarily as far off on the top four. If I had to make a guess right now (and things can certainly change) I would put the top two as David A and Carly, with possibly David C or Jason taking Carly’s spot. I think Brooke is in the top 6, but I would be kind of surprised if she goes top two. I don’t think Michael Johns has lived up to his Hollywood performances so far.

Did Paula say that on the Today show? I couldn’t access the video. I prefer the clip of Simon on TMZ when he was asked about this Season. He said they were “ok” and the “kid” was in the lead but that could change. He didn’t look all that excited about it either. He stopped mouthing the best top 12 ever line after the first week.

I heard her say this was the best season ever on The View and no one applauded. Just saying.

    On song choice (Asiah)

Debra Byrd: We told her that. And we named the people and that they were voted off right after. We said all of that stuff. Always remember it’s their choice.

I thought so!!!! So Asiah and the others can bellyache all they want about being the first….but I’m sure the coaches tell them not to do certain songs and they just continue with it anyway.

It’s like Josiah telling Debra and the band he didn’t want to sing with them. Too independent, like they know what’s best.

Sorry folks but you won’t remember Josiah’s name this time next year. Trust me.

Did Paula say that on the Today show?

Yep. She said you could take any of the top twelve this year and put them up against the top three of previous years.

  13. 13 jpfan Mar 10th, 2008 at 9:50 pm

That’s great because half of the top 12 in Season 5 released albums that debuted in the Top 10 of the BB 200 so if Paula’s right this Season’s crew should all debut there.

Right. Let me just go grab that giant memory eraser that instantaneously purges my memory of deep, untapped, raw talent.

I went to the Today Show site and found the video. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12065856/

I don’t disagree with their top 4 with the best chance although David C and Jason could be thrown in there. I believe Michael belongs in there because he has charisma and that will help him continue on each week. I think they’re underestimating David C’s appeal.

    Make that two.

I think this year is the most competitive year they have had in ages. Last year, I could have cared less who won as long as Phil stayed in it as long as possible. I also felt the contestants could have cared less who won as well.

This year, I think a lot of them are very competitive AND very talented. Yes, I could make a good case for Carly, Michael J, or Awwwchuletta winning. But I could also make a pretty good case for Jason C or David Cook. And I could come up with a plausible case for David H (seriously, this guy is focused on singing) or maybe Brooke. So there is 7 people out of 12. Kristie Lee Who?/SyNosha/Ramiele/ChuckCheese/ and Amanda would be a huge surprise upset win that I don’t think can/will happen.

Very very talented group and a good portion of them competitive in a healthy way. Why yes, I’m excited about American Idol again … and seriously, it’s not just because of Jason’s beautiful blue eyes…./shallow

My opinion, for what it’s worth.

    Clear shot at winning:
    David A.

Potential to win, if they step it up:
Michael, Carly, David C, Kristy (I’m serious! lol)

Should go far, but hard to see taking the whole thing:
    Brooke, Jason, Ramielle

    No chance in hell:
    Chizeke, David H, Syesha, Amanda

I don’t care what Randy and Paula say, to me they are useless when it comes to this stuff. Tweedledee and Tweedledum.

  19. 19 Daughtry_AJ Mar 11th, 2008 at 10:45 am

I just don’t see David C possibly managing anything higher than 5th. I mean he has a good and unique performance and now all of a sudden everyone’s so sure that he’s top 3 or even a good shot at winning, when yet hardly anyone was talking abut him two weeks ago. I don’t think he’s going to have very many performances like Hello, and I think his new found popularity is gonna die down quick. I mean if Chris could only manage 4th place, I would be shocked to see David C finish higher, since I don’t think he has anywhere near the fanbase Chris had.

Any way heres my breakdown of the contenders:

1st group (most likely to win)
    David A

    2nd group (potential winners)
Jason, Carly, Ramielle (I think she has a HUGE fanbase like Jasmine)

3rd Group (Top 6 contenders, but can’t see them winning)
    Brooke, Michael, David C

4th group (Very slim chance of winning, but if they really step up could maybe make top 4)
David H (He does have a great voice, just not a great fanbase)

5th group (Zero chance of winning)
    Chikezie, Syesha, Kristy, Amanda

I see what you are saying, but how many past contestants were no one until they had a breakout performance in the semis? Besides, he HAS been a consistantly good singer, seems to know his voice well and chooses appropriate songs, and he has the whole “room to grow” thing going for him. And he’s cute. So he has potential to me.

You may be right about Ramielle. I don’t see her as a mass market type, but I could be seriously underestimating her fanbase.

Everybody had Jason as a contender, but I just can’t se him doing any other style besides Stoner Folkie. I love him, but the winner? I don’t know. Hmmm….

My list is more like Tinawina’s:

    Clear shot at winning:
    David A., David C.

Potential to win, if they step it up:
    Michael, Carly

Should go far, but hard to see taking the whole thing:
Jason, Brooke, Ramielle, Kristy, David H

    No chance in hell:

I have to agree with part of this. I don’t think Jason will win, but he could get up to as high as 3rd. Have you been to the AI boards lately? He’s by far the most popular (or his fans are most obsessed- and obsession can’t be a bad thing. Look at Clay and Taylor).

It looks like he picked up key fanbases (I tried to do a poll there, but it got confusing after a while): namely, fans from Taylor (quirky and unique), Elliott (underdog), Blake (cool?), Bo/Constantine (again unique), and Clay (camera love) trickled to his camp. The good news for Jason: these are fans who vote and buy.

Thanks for the info primeminister. That’s good news for Jason. I hope his coalition holds. It would be nice to have someone like him win. :-)

On the other hand, what would Clive make him sing? I shudder at the thought. LOL!
