Well… that was interesting. I’m not going to claim to know much about Bob Dylan, because I don’t. But, hmmm.

The original song was not bad, but… eeeek. They still just don’t do anything for me.

Not diggin’ The Hatch. The lead singer is meh.

  3. 3 Sarah Oct 26th, 2007 at 8:31 pm

Yeah, I thought I might like The Hatch, because I kinda liked their sound in their audition. But eh.

And Light of Doom is just plain wrong. Period.

ETA: You’re not the only person in America who finds it spooky, Dicko. Promise.

ETA2: Well damn. I wanted to like The Likes of You more than that, too. Attn lead singer dude (whatever your name is): lay off the falsetto.

Get Light of Doom a babysitter so we can get back to regular schedulded programming.

Wow the horror is only half over. I liked the opening show but I can now see this is just going to be painful. What I find so surprising is how much the judges are saying the exact comments I’m thinking. The Hatch’s original song was a forgettable mass without any hooks, the light of Doom is just creepy in front of an adult audience, the Likes of You needs to tone down the falsetto, and Rocket’s lead singer is a waste of space.

Light of Doom is the VFTW pick.

  7. 7 Lisa Oct 26th, 2007 at 10:39 pm

Two hours was a bit long to listen to 7 or 8 lackluster performers.

***insert scream of HORROR here*** OMG I like country music. Mother kill me now please. Who slipped me the Country tea????? arrrgh

Top bands tonight for me in order of the best to worst:
    1. Sixwire, I would buy the cd of their original now.
    2. (tie) The Clark Brothers, I thought they were great, & how cute is Ashley? Would buy the original now.
    2. (tie) Cliff Wagner & The Old #7, reminds me of *Deliverance*, heh, love em. Would go watch them live now.

    Mediocre:
    3. The Likes of You, was ok, you will have to ramp it up next week.
    4. Franklin Bridge, just ok. I do not see them winning like Sheila E does. Sheila E is not doing them any favors by her over the top praise. HUGE TURN OFF FOR ME because of her.
    5. Dot Dot Dot, lead guy is fun, if they can blend the lead vocals and music smoother, the other bands might have some competition.
    6. Tres Bien, ya think they are big Beatles fans? heh They were cute.

    Bathroom Breaks:
    The Muggs
    The Hatch

    In the Gutter:
Denver & the miles tooooo long orchestra. Ummm no.
Light of Doom. Why are they on here? Really? Someone find those kids a shirt too please. They robbed a couple of bands last week, what a shame.
Rockets, lead singer reminds me of a petulant child. This is the BEST female band they could find? puuhhlease.

I could do without the gutterball bands next week. That might shave off a good 30 minutes. The top 3 bands were great, the others need to step it up 100 notches. Not that they were bad, just maybe nerves got to them tonight. Sixwire lead singer looks alot like my hubby, ha!

Well if a diehard idol fan found that the longest two hours of TV ever, I can only imagine what the general public is thinking. I think this show is doomed and it’s a shame cause there are a few really talented bands out of the twelve. My own personal likes and dislikes are pretty close to Lisa’s. The Clark Brothers, Sixwire and Cliff Wagoner were also my faves along with Tres Bien. I couldn’t stomach Denver & the Miles, The Hatch (which is a shame because they are from Brooklyn and I really wanted to root for my hometown), The Muggs (Dicko’s comments were right on about the singer trying to hide his poor vocals with that affected scowl), The Likes of You (too much falsetto and it is obvious that this the bald guys one shot at fame and not a real band). While I would never in a million years want to buy a record by Dot Dot Dot, Light of Doom, Franklin Bridge or Light of Doom, I found them entertaining to watch (yes, even those shirtless tweens). I was impressed that all three of the judges had insightful comments to offer on more than one occasion, with Dicko being the most insightful of the bunch.

I keep asking myself why is this show so much more hard to watch than Idol? Why does watching someone wreck a cover of Stevie Wonder seem more entertaining than bands performing original songs and covers? My finger was on the fast forward halfway though half of these performances and I could not summon the enthusiasm to vote for any of them.

Me, too. I think it’s because the bands have to establish their own vision/identity to a much greater degree than do the individual vocalists on AI, who have the different (but also daunting) task of establishing something individualized and memorable through others’ songs. With ANGB, you have a limited amount of time to get and evaluate the musical worldview, and, alaas, that limited time is more than enough to conclude that a given band’s musical vision is hopekessly derivative, insincere or simply thin. And once you make that judgment, it’s hard not to want to amke it stop.

I enjoyed watching the show. There were way too many commercials and it probably could have been 90 minutes instead of 2 hours but I was never bored. Of course, maybe I think it could have been 90 minutes because there were about 30 minutes worth of bands I couldn’t stand (The Hatch, The Likes of You and Rocket, specifically).

Other bands I wasn’t thrilled with were Dot X’s 3 and Franklin Bridge. All the others though, I at least enjoyed watching, even Denver and co. My favorites were Sixwire and The Clark Brothers.

Sounds like I gave up before the best bands came on. I must agree with those of you who found this boooring. After last week I had high hopes but the pace this week was so slow. I think one of the problems with this show is that you know you are going to get two songs by the same band, at the same time. So, if you don’t like them you tune out entirely (I kept switching back to HGTV) which makes the show seem to really drag out. And have to agree - 13 year olds with no shirt - YUK!

  12. 12 Sarah Oct 27th, 2007 at 9:28 am

It did seem like they used the first half to get the bands out of the way that they have no intention of pimping. My roommates got home in the middle of the show, and at that point my comment was “I sure hope they’re saving the best for last”.

I don’t know how I’d rank them, but the ones I’d buy a cd from now are The Clark Brothers (my fave band so far, for sure), Sixwire (remind me a lot of Rascal Flatts without the nasally lead singer), Dot cubed (sorry, I really like them, I liked their original song a lot, though I agree the lyrics need work. They need a bit more work overall - they have only been together for a few months - but I think they could be a force in the competition if they continue to improve.), and maybe Franklin Bridge (although I agree that the OTT pimping by Sheila E is probably gonna hurt them in the long run).

The ones I like, but probably wouldn’t buy a cd: Cliff Wagner, The Muggs, Tres Bien (though I feel like I should support them since they’re from Florida :)).

The ones I’m “meh” on are The Likes of You and The Hatch.

The rest I could definitely do without. And Lisa, I agree… Rocket is the BEST girl band they could find? Doubt it.

I also think that the judges were pretty helpful and insightful at some point during the night. The one who most seemed to be on target was Dicko, but Sheila E and Johnny both also gave some great advice.

Franklin Bridge got my votes - I loved their melding of R & B, funk and rock. The lead singer gives me an Anthony David vibe. The rhythm section is outstanding, and the guitarist rocked the solo. Dicko you’re just wrong, buddy.

I thought Cliff Wagner and The Old #7 had the best Dylan cover. Dylan songs lend themselves well to the bluegrass style. Their original was also excellent.

Though indisputably talented, The Clark Bros. were just OK for me. The chick guitarist and bassist in Dot cube played circles around the Rocket girls. Hey Rocket, um, ever heard of a guitar solo? Posers.

The Muggs guitarist tore that Gibson up, but I agree with others on the voice - it doesn’t fit with the music. He needs to relax and pump a little blues in there to go with the musical style.

Shocker of the night for me was Sixwire, whose strong musicality changed my initial impression of them as just another generic, nu-country band.

I’m an idolfanatic since season one so I really tried to like this show…but…had to turn the channel after the shirtless 13 yr olds :thumbdown_tb:….Never again

  15. 15 Ladybug Oct 27th, 2007 at 12:38 pm

Egads! I probably will watch this one to the bitter end. I will say, though, there were some enjoyable aspects to the show last night because there is talent with some of these groups. Some WTF moments for me as well, just to keep it interesting.

I will say up front — I am sick of post-apocalyptic looking bald headed guys in bands or solo, hosting game shows, dancing with some stars, you name it. Don’t care HOW talented they are. I am sick of that look, so I hope that band leaves soon.

The little boys all need to go home now and get back in school. At first I was sort of, ok, charmed, but that has totally worn off. They are just completely ridiculous now with the shirtless, white-bread rawker look. Erk! Thanks to Sheila E and Dick-O for pointing that out.

Franklin Bridge and Sixwire were standouts for sure.

I came away with viewing a number of these groups as trying so hard it was almost painful to watch. Talented as the Muggs are, I am over them. Clark Bros. Cute, talented, and working it overtime.

The girl band is mediocre and DotDotDot bother the heck out of me. Maybe it is the Lukas Rossi look of their lead singer and their whole we-are-rock-and-rollers-because-we-jump-around-a-lot.

    Rocket. Minimally talented.

Bluegrass guys. Enjoyable but pretty mundane stuff IMO.

The others all sort of run together, so they mustn’t have stood out. I think Tres Bien has a cool vibe, but I didn’t think they were that great last night.

I am sure I will stay tuned each week until they rip it out from under it’s time slot due to dismal ratings, or it actually finishes up with a winner.

I liked the show too, but must confess, I watched it after I finished working at midnight so my judgment may be warped by exhaustion. That being said, I really, really like Sixwire, Franklin Bridge and The Clark Brothers. They’re my top three, and I predict Sixwire will win it, although I am completely smitten by the lead singer of FB (love a black man with great arms!)

With such sucky ratings, though, I wonder how long this will last. They may have to speed it up, eliminating two per week until they get to four or something. These bands deserve a chance to be seen, I think. And I agree, Light of Doom is wrong on so many levels I don’t even want to go there.

  17. 17 Sparkles Oct 27th, 2007 at 2:59 pm

I only got through the entire show because I watched it on my DVR. I listened to as much as I could stand from most of the performances & then fast forwarded to the judges.

My faves are still Tres Bien! (the ! is theirs, not mine). When I watch them, I get transported to the early 60’s & everything is totally groovy, baby (and the good thing is, no acid is required).

The funniest part to me was when one of the judges ripped on the rockin’ tots for going shirtless & one of them said “I told you” to one of his bandmates. I’m guessing Def Leppard & countless other hair bands have pondered this… to be shirtless or not be shirtless, that is the question.

Which one of the musical phenoms in Rocket suggested they add the background “Knock, knock! Knock, knock!” to the chorus of “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door”?

The Muggs are great musicians, but their vocals are bad.

The Hatch are not-great musicians, and their vocals are bad.

I enjoyed Franklin Bridge much more than I thought I would. But, gawd, I HATE it when a band says “Somebody, scream!”

I didn’t enjoy the Clark Brothers nearly as much as I thought I would. I thought their style was a little bland, a little generic.

I wished Tres Bien had been tighter.

Light of Doom! Love those kids. I so don’t see the “sexuality” in the no-shirts thing. I guess I just don’t mentally process an iconic shirtless male as inherently sexual. They seemed like just a group of kids being rawkers.
