Next Week’s Theme According to Paula Abdul: DISCO! Plus, She’ll be Choreographing the Group Number
Paula Abdul tells John Jay and Rich in her weekly interview with the KISS Phoenix radio show that next week’s theme is…
DISCO!
Best part:Â She’ll be choreographing the big cheesy group number. Yipee!

She doesn’t think there’s a mentor, but says several Disco stars will be there to perform.
A couple of interesting tidbits
- Paula is worried about Matt Giraud and Lil Rounds
- Paula said Matt nailed his performance during rehearsals
- She absolutely hated not being able to critique every performance when the judges were split into two teams for time constraints. She didn’t find out until show time. First they though they’d split it up by gender,, but then switched it up at the last minute. Simon had a hand in the decision.
- Paula doesn’t think Simon will leave.

Predictions: Adam will shine (no brainer). Kris has the potential to do really well, so long as he rearranges the right song. Lil would probably do well, but I’m hoping she doesn’t get the opportunity. Allison and Anoop also have a good shot at doing well. I think this will be really tough for Matt, but I want him to do well. Danny will make my ears and my eyes bleed.
Is it disco or is it the 70’s? I would love to hear/see Adam sing Bowie ¨’s Fame! That would be fuckin awesome! Don ¨’t know if te backup singers would be able to do lennon’s part, tho’
I can really hear Allison making an impassioned ballad out of Don’t Leave Me This Way.
Come to think of it, I can hear ME making an impassioned ballad out of Don’t Leave Me This Way if she goes home tonight. :glurps_tb:
…and please no Abba! I live in Denmark and that group is STILL just overplayed here…they ¨’ve made a comeback with the youngsters…honestly cannot abide their music.
If LIl survives, I’m sure she wll sing a Donna Summers ¨’ song.
I think Kris should sing “Jungle Boogie”. Hee.
Allison- maybe I will survive…but 1 minute 30 seconds really does shorten that Disco anthem. Hmmmm. If she survives she needs a comeback but she really edffed up last night.
Maybe Adam should sing y”ou can ring my bell” One of the best songs from the disco era.
I hope he doesn’t start becoming predictable by singing a bee Gees song-falstto and all that- although I used to love the BeeGees.
Actually, I think this is a so-so theme for everyone, including Adam, who runs the risk of overdoing it here more than in any other category. But he’s smart so I’m not too worried for him.
It’s one of those categories where you can make it much better by simply rearranging some cornball song and making it lovely, so actually I think anyone can do well.
And I’m really looking forward to Paula’s choreography. The group number should be fun! I bet their outfits will be a blast.
DISCO WEEK????!!
The potential for cheese, and not the good kind, is overwhelming. Danny will be unable to resist the call of velveeta. Matt and Anoop, if they are still there, will be pure corn. There is nothing disco about Alison. Lil has been handed a gift on a silver platter, and she will still find a way to blow it. Kris is way too vanilla for disco.
Adam should do well thought. He does disco every damn week anyway.
Shoot me now.
Danny will sing Don’t Leave Me This Way. :wallbash_tb:
Adam will probably shock us all by turning a cheesy disco song into a lovely mid-tempo power ballad. He hasn’t done a ROF-style total rearrangement in a while.
Fame would be stellar. Or Changes. Or Golden Years. Or especially Life On Mars!!!! I wonder if Adam could get away with going the Bowie route since he already did Play That Funky Music. I give up trying to guess, though. I’m sure they will get a very short list to choose from. And someone will do Brick House.
I think they pulled disco back in to showcase Adam – it is so his wheelhouse (tm Randy). Allison can growl out “I Love the Nightlife”, Kris can do a little BeeGees ballad – “I Want to be Your Everything”. And Lil – well surely she’ll be gone and we won’t have to worry about it. Anoop, Matt and Danny – I don’t even care.
Paula’s choreographing? Oh, this should be fun. :dry_tb:
Since I have basically zero knowledge of Disco outside of the BeeGees (thank you, mom) I can’t really speculate. All I know is, it sure seems like this was set up for Adam. If it wasn’t, he got lucky and the rest of them definately did not.
Not that I have a PhD in disco or anything, but the term often applies to dance songs from the 1970s AND 1980s, with lots of overdubbing, a steady dance beat, and really really tragic platform shoes, Farah Fawcett hair, and skin-tight, flared, garish clothing you wouldn’t wish on a kindergarten Halloween party.
Of course, AI’s idea of “disco” is anyone’s guess. Could it mean even MORE Bryan Adams and Diane Warren songs?
And Ms. Paula is going to turn this bunch of clumping kids into Fly Boys and Girls on the dance floor?? This could be a classic….
Ok…this music is awful. These are not predictions of what they will sing, but I think they are best for the people. Who knows who is going home so I just chose from the 7 left:
Matt: How Deep is Your Love by The Bee Gees (good for the falsetto etc)
Kris: Knock on Wood by Amii Stewart (lots of other people have done this and I really hope he gets this, if not it has Danny written all over it and I just don’t want that for this song!)
Allison: Can’t Get Enough of Your Love by Barry White (just change the key and I think she can change it and rock out with it)
Anoop: If I Can’t Have You by Yvonne Elliman (it has energy, but not too much energy)
Adam: Stayin’ Alive by The Bee Gees (because it should be done and I think he’s the only one who can pull it off)
Lil’: Don’t Leave Me this Way by Thelma Houston (big diva’s mom, it would work well with her voice)
Danny: Boogie Shoes by KC & the Sushine Band (cool music to listen to and not that much singing necessary)
Found the PURRRRRRfect song for ANOOP, a great Billy Preston disco song from 1979, Give it To Me Hot

Oh. This one’s gonna be a doozie.
I hope the group dance is better then how Paula dances by herself when they sing. Every time she does the same thing a clap followed by a few shakes
Fantasia did Holding Out For A Hero, season 3 on Disco Week. Hopefully Allison will do that. Its pretty much in her key as is and Fantasia didn’t do so well with it, so its safe from comparisons. It would be a breath of fresh raw power on a night full of falsettos, so will stand out. It will also give TPTB more flexibility in positioning her as the soul boys will all go soft next week, those that remain that is.
Something along the lines of Tori Amos’s version of Ring My Bell for Allison could be fun.

Go ANOOP!!
I think Gokey will kick some ass next week.
There was a time, back in the 80’s when Paula was a pretty kick ass choreographer. She has a ton of training and a lot of experience. I have no explanation for why she seems to have lost her own rhythm at some point. But I do know that, at one point, she had the skills. She hasn’t done the choreography thing in a VERY long time. So, it’s good that she’s going to do it during disco week, as I expect the moves to be pretty dated.
Basically, she’s got the resume to choreograph a group number, she just doesn’t have the latest dance “language” so to speak. That said – I’m waaaay interested to see what she comes up with.
Gosh, it will be a dreadful night for I. I hate disco !
Here are my picks~
Adam:
Super Freak – Rick James
Stayin’ Alive – Bee Gees
You’re The First, The Last, My Everything – Barry White
Get Up Offa That Thing – James Brown
You Sexy Thing – Hot Chocolate
Allison:
Lady Marmalade – Labelle
Dancing Queen – Abba
Heart of Glass – Blondie
Anoop:
Copacabana
Danny: (is it obvious I’m not a fan?)
Boogie Oogie Oogie
L’il (if she’s still there):
I Will Survive
Not sure about Kris or Matt
JohnM, you suggested one of my favorite songs, “Stay.” If Adam doesn’t cover Bowie for Disco Week, I don’t know when he will. I haven’t timed it, but I’m pretty sure the song has more total instrumental sections than vocal. There’s probably enough vocal to follow that signature guitar intro for the stage performance. I just wonder if the studio version on iTunes would be full length.
IIRC, Allison mentioned ABBA as a guilty pleasure. If she picks “Dancing Queen,” she should change the lyrics to “young and sweet, only sixteen.” I think “Fernando” or “The Name of the Game” would better suit her voice and range. I wanted her to sing “Lady Marmalade” this week and it would still be a killer showcase for her.
I think Kris, Danny, Matt and Lil could find good songs from the era.
“Groove Line” by Heatwave would be a great group song.
I think Allison should sing “Everytime we touch” – Cascada (Acoustic version) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8GVosRh7wbQ
